Scripts - Episode 3124

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS, NOAH and ALEX walk in. SHELLEY and BRODIE are there.

ALEX

Hey Rhys. Look, thanks a lot about this. I really appreciate it.

RHYS

Yeah, well, you know the deal mate. I don’t want you mind giving you a place to work on if it’s not a junk yard.  I don’t want to see the grass growing up around it.

ALEX

No, no, no, we’ll be gone by the morning.

NOAH

Mate, you’re dreaming. You’re totally dreaming.

ALEX

Noah, we have to finish by then, OK. Vinnie and Leah have been through a lot lately. It’s like this car’s about the only decent thing that’s happened to them in a long time. I’m not going home and say, guess what, I broke the car.

NOAH

Well maybe you should have thought of that before you.

ALEX

Yes, but I didn’t think of that of earlier, OK, so just relax. I’m an idiot. We all agree on that. Let’s just think about fixing this car.

RHYS

Come on you lot. There’s no use talking about it. Either we do this or we don’t.

ALEX

Look Rhys, do you really think we’ve got a chance of fixing this?

RHYS

Eh, well, you know, it’s mainly the electric’s and the hoses. I mean, the carbie’s been buckled by the heat. That will have to be replaced, but it looked like it mainly, was you, regular parts. If you get that list down to the old auto parts place on River Road before she closes you might just be in with a chance.

ALEX

Do you think so?

RHYS

Take my car and drive carefully.

ALEX

I promise. Come on.

NOAH and ALEX leave.

SHELLEY

And you’re going to be out there all night working on it with them, are you?

RHYS

Ah, yeah, pretty much. I mean, you know, there’s a lot to do. I really can’t see us finishing before morning and like Alex said, Vinnie and Leah, they’ve been through a rough patch recently.

SHELLEY

Aw, yes, Vinnie and Leah. This is all for their benefit, isn’t it?

RHYS

Well, yeah, of course.

SHELLEY

And the fact that you get the chance to work on souped up car all night has nothing to do with it.

RHYS

Of course not,

SHELLEY

I didn’t think so.

BRODIE

So, em, how exactly did it happen?

RHYS

Em, engine caught fire.

BRODIE

Oh, just like that.

RHYS

Yeah, well it does happen Brodie.

BRODIE

Rhys.

RHYS

Well apparently he got mixed up in some sort of drag race with these Mangrove River kids.

BRODIE

That is so predictable. I don’t even know why I bothered with him in the first place and I don’t know why you’re helping him because he doesn’t deserve it.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

LEAH, ALEX and NOAH are all in the kitchen.

LEAH

So, why do you have to stay overnight?

ALEX

Hello, Leah. It’s a party. There’s going to be the odd, you know, alcoholic drink involved. It’s going to finish at two, three a.m. you see, so he kind of suggested a sleepover. Do the responsible the thing like in the ad, right.

LEAH

All right, well what’s wrong with your own van.

ALEX

How many times do I tell you? The alternator is stuffing up on me. OK, what, do you want me to be left in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night.

LEAH

But I thought you said you were staying over.

ALEX

How am I going to get there? You don’t believe me, do you?

LEAH

Hmm, Hmm.

ALEX

Right, what do you think I’m going to do? Come on, let’s hear it.

LEAH

I think you’re chasing girls.

ALEX

Chasing girls. I knew you’d say that. Noah and I going to chase girls.

NOAH

No, definitely not.

ALEX

No.

LEAH

No offence, Noah, but you’re his mate, right, so of course you’re going to say that.

ALEX

All right. So I’m a liar now and my friend is a liar as well. That’s really offensive.

LEAH

Go. Do whatever you want. Oh, Alexi, the milk.

ALEX

What about it?

LEAH

You were supposed to get the milk this afternoon. That’s why you borrowed the car.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SHELLEY, JAN and BRODIE are there.

BRODIE

You want to stay in a caravan. But, why, is there something wrong at home?

JAN

No, no, of course not. See how they always automatically leap to the most extreme conclusion. No, I just thought that I’ve got two days off, so rather than drive back and forth, I’d just book in here.

BRODIE

Ah, it’s pretty expensive.

SHELLEY

Oh, well, of course we wouldn’t charge your mother Brodie.

JAN

So there you go, unless you can think of some other reason why you don’t want me to stay here.

BRODIE

No, I wasn’t saying that I didn’t want you to stay.

SHELLEY

Well then, I’ll get a key.

JAN

Thanks Shelley.

RHYS, ALEX and NOAH are out on the veranda.

RHYS

Well, looks like you’ve got everything. All right, let’s get stuck into it. It will be dark soon. Earth calling Noah, listening.

NOAH

Sorry, what?

ALEX

Noah, do you think you get your mind off Hayley for about five seconds?

NOAH

Yeah, all right. All right, I was just wondering if she got the flowers yet.

ALEX

The flowers, you sent her flowers. Haven’t you heard of treat them mean, keep them keen?

RHYS

And that’s your philosophy towards woman, is it Alex?

ALEX

No, that’s just saying Rhys. I mean, I wasn’t being serious. I’m not talking about me and Brodie.

RHYS

Yeah, well look, I’m not buying into that, but, em, I tell you one thing. If that’s the technique you’re going to use with her well, from the way she was going on about you earlier, you’ve got another thing coming.

LONDON-THE HOTEL

After showing several sights of London, DON, NICK, HAYLEY, IRENE and WILL all get out a taxi. ROBBIE comes out to meet them.

DON

Here we are.

ROBBIE

Good morning. Do you have a reservation?

DON

Ah, yes we do. It’s a single room for Fisher and twins for Roberts and Smith.

ROBBIE

Ah, yes, we’ve been expecting you. Hayley Smith?

IRENE

Ah, me, I wish. No, no, no, this is Hayley.

ROBBIE

These came for you earlier.

HAYLEY

Don’t tell me, Noah.

IRENE

Aw love, they’re just beautiful.

HAYLEY

Yeah, he’s supposed to be giving me space to think.

NICK

Aw, come on Hayls. If you didn’t here from him you’d be complaining even more.

HAYLEY

Did anyone ask you Nick?

WILL

Look, can we just check in. I want to go for a walk.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well make sure it’s a long one, all right.

NICK

Yeah Will, what’s your problem?

IRENE

Can you people please keep it down to a dull roar?

DON

We’re a little jet lagged I’m afraid.

ROBBIE

If you would like to follow me to your rooms.

IRENE and HAYLEY are in one of the bedrooms.

HAYLEY

It’s supposed to be like the holiday of a lifetime. He’s ruining it Irene.

IRENE

Yeah, well, he’s been a right royal pain, I’ll grant you that.

HAYLEY

And it’s really lousy for Nick. I mean, he’s got no one to hang with. At the stop over in Kuala Lumpur Will wouldn’t even go exploring with him. He’d be lucky if you got a grunt out of Will.

IRENE

Yeah, love, I know.

HAYLEY

So, what’s going on?

IRENE

How should I know Hayley? He hasn’t said boo to me either since we left.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well it’s ruining everything.

IRENE

Yeah, and saying it over and over and over again is really helping things, isn’t it? Look, love, I’ll talk to him when he gets back, OK. In the meantime if I don’t get some shut eye I’m going start climbing the wall. I’ll talk to him all right.

LONDON-TRAFALGAR SQUARE

WILL is there.

A FLASHBACK-THE BEACH

GYPSY and WILL are there.

WILL

Don’t say we’re the same. We’ve never been the same.

GYPSY

Well we’ve got something in common now and we will have for the rest of our lives.

LONDON-TRAFALGAR SQUARE

WILL walks away.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SHELLEY and BRODIE are in BRODIE and DANI’S bedroom.

SHELLEY

I was wondering if you wanted to invite you’re mother over for dinner.

BRODIE

Oh.

SHELLEY

It’s just a thought. The invitation’s there if you want to pass it on.

BRODIE

Yeah, right. Will you think I’m terrible if I don’t?

SHELLEY

No, of course not. I did get the feeling when she was booking in that you weren’t very keen on the idea.

BRODIE

Oh no, I handled that so badly.

SHELLEY

Yeah, well, it’s harder when someone springs it on you like that.

BRODIE

I don’t think I would have handled it any better had I expected it.

SHELLEY

Yeah, you’re obviously not enjoying having her around as much as we thought you were.

BRODIE

I am, but just every now and then something happens. Today we were at the diner and I knocked over this glass. I cringed. I thought she was going to hit me. That’s just what she would have done in the old day and, yeah, it’s great that she back and we’re talking again, but I don’t think I could live with her, ever.

LONDON-THE HOTEL

ROBBIE gives somebody directions. WILL walks along the pavement.

ROBBIE

Swing left, swing a right. You’ll find the museum on the right. Hi, how was the walk?

WILL

Yeah, it was great.

ROBBIE

It’s a lot to try to take in on one time isn’t it?

WILL

Yeah, listen, have you got a piece of paper or something I can write a letter on.

ROBBIE

Perfect place over there to right.

WILL

Thanks.

WILL tries to write a letter, but each time he throws it away.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BRODIE and SHELLEY are there. RHYS, ALEX and NOAH come in.

SHELLEY

Ah, and they say it’s woman how are supposed to have a secret sense. Dinner just going on the table.

RHYS

Never underestimate the male food radar woman.

SHELLEY

Oh, I’d never do that.

RHYS

We better go to the laundry, lads.

RHYS and NOAH leave.

ALEX

Thanks Shelley. This is really nice of you.

SHELLEY

Oh, well, it’s bad enough you boys won’t be getting any sleep tonight. Can’t have you going hungry as well?

BRODIE

I wouldn’t have a problem with that.

ALEX

Thanks Brodie.

BRODIE

No worries.

RHYS

Hey, Brods. Just be a bit nice towards Alex. He’s a guest in the house.

BRODIE

Yeah, he’s your guest. Not mine.  A car race. What kind of moron would even do something like that.

NOAH

Mrs Sutherland.

SHELLEY

Yes Noah.

NOAH

Yeah, I’ve got this international call card and I was wondering if I could call Hayley in London.

SHELLEY

Yeah, sure. Here you go. Why don’t you take it out in the hall? You’ll have a bit more privacy.

NOAH

Aw, thanks.

LONDON-THE HOTEL

The phone rings. ROBBIE answers it.

ROBBIE

Radisson Edwardian Hotel.

NOAH

Oh, yeah, look, I’m calling from Australia. I was just wondering if Hayley Smith has arrived.

ROBBIE

Ah, yes, she has. Is that Noah?

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

NOAH is on the phone.

NOAH

Yeah, yeah, it is. How do you know that?

ROBBIE

You’re flowers arrived.

NOAH

Aw, what did she say? Did she like them?

LONDON-THE HOTEL

ROBBIE is on the phone.

ROBBIE

Eh, she was very tired off the flight, but I’m sure she did. They were pretty special.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

NOAH is on the phone.

NOAH

Ah, excellent. I asked the florist to make sure they made an impact.

ROBBIE

Aw, well they did a good job.

NOAH

Ah, yeah, I couldn’t talk to her, could I?

LONDON-THE HOTEL

ROBBIE is on the phone.

ROBBIE

Em, sorry, but they did say they were going to try and get some sleep. I better not put you through.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

NOAH is on the phone.

NOAH

Aw, fair enough.

ROBBIE

So what time is it over there?

NOAH

Ah, just coming up to seven. We’re just about to have dinner.

LONDON-THE HOTEL

ROBBIE is on the phone.

ROBBIE

Oh, right, so that makes you nine hours ahead or are you fifteen behind. I’m not sure which.

NOAH

Ahead I think.

THE CARAVAN PARK

RHYS, ALEX and NOAH are working on the car.

ALEX

You’re an absolute classic. You ring London and you spend all your time talking to the hotel receptionist.

NOAH

He sounds like a nice guys. He said that Hail liked the flower.

ALEX

An absolute classic.

NOAH

Hey, I’m missing her OK. I just wanted to hear how she was doing. Just lay off.

COLLEEN comes over to the car.

COLLEEN

How much longer do we have to put up with all this banging and what not, Rhys?

RHYS

Well, I don’t know for sure Colleen. We’re at a very delicate stage of operations here.

COLLEEN

Isn’t that Leah’s car?

RHYS

Over to you Alex.

ALEX

Yes, Colleen, it is, but you know what, I’d really appreciate it if you didn’t tell her you saw us here tonight.

COLLEEN

Your sisters like a daughter to me. I couldn’t lie for her.

ALEX

I respect that, but you know what, Colleen? I am not asking you to lie to her. You see if Leah comes up to you and says did you see Alex, Rhys and Noah on working on my car at the Caravan Park, you know what I want you to say. I want you to say yes I did, because you did. Colleen, she’s probably not going to ask you that because she’s got no idea that we’re here and that’s way I want it to stay. You see, my sister’s in a very delicate condition right now. This would only upset her and you’re very, very close friend of my sister. Would you like to see her upset?

JAN walks out.

JAN

Coffee’s up.

RHYS

Oh, that’s very nice of you Jan. You didn’t have to do that.

JAN

Well, I think you blokes deserve a break. You’ve been working so hard and all of that. You know I do admire a man how knows his way around. It’s a complete mystery to me.

COLLEEN

Yes, well, I’ll be heading back to bed now, Rhys. Just try to remember that some of us are light sleepers.

RHYS

We’ll do our best to keep the noise down, Colleen.

COLLEEN

Thank you.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SHELLEY is there. RHYS walks in.

SHELLEY

Hi, you finished all ready.

RHYS

I wish. I’m just on a bit of a loo break. What are you doing?

SHELLEY

I couldn’t sleep. I just thought I’d brainstorm some ideas for the fundraising. Oh I’ll make you some coffee if you like or would you prefer tea.

RHYS

Eh, no thanks. We’ve just had some.

SHEELEY

Oh, yeah.

RHYS

Jan brought us out some.

SHELLEY

Aw really.

RHYS

Ah ha.

SHELLEY

Well that was nice with her.

RHYS

I guess so.

SHELLEY

What?

RHYS

Well, look I know I was way off the mark with Gypsy, but, I mean, normally I’ve got a pretty good idea. I know when someone’s trying to flirt with me. I mean, it doesn’t happen all that often, but, yeah, she was doing it earlier today at the surf club and then again out there. It’s pretty obvious.

SHELLEY

Can you handle it?

RHYS

Yeah, I can handle it. It’s just Brodie I’m worried about it Jan keeps up. I mean, she’s going to feel terrible.

LONDON-THE HOTEL

IRENE, NICK and HAYLEY are in the hotel room.

HAYLEY

It’s going to be so boring, Irene.

IRENE

This is not up for debate Hayley. Don has very kindly asked us to go on a quick sight seeing tour. As far as I’m concerned, we’re damm lucky to have someone along how knows the way around the place so you can go along and listen to what he says and how knows, you might even learn something. Got it. Nick love, can you go and see what your brother’s up to please. Try and not start World War Three process. That would be good. Oi, girlie, smile.

HAYLEY

Tell that to Will.

IRENE

Don’t you worry? I intend to.

THE CARAVAN PARK

RHYS, ALEX and NOAH are there.

RHYS

Got you.

ALEX

Rhys, how can you even see?

RHYS

Well, our generation knew how to party. You wimps don’t know what it’s all about.

ALEX

Did you party by fixing cars? What a crazy generation.

NOAH

What time is it when the big hands at eight and the little hands on five?

ALEX

Time for me to get out this town and never look back.

RHYS

You wouldn’t want to do that before we checked out whether she works or not, would you?

ALEX

What? We’ve finished.

RHYS

Well as finished as we’re ever going to be. I mean, if she doesn’t work now, you’re going to have to take her to the professionals.

ALEX

Oh, man.

RHYS

Oh, ye of little faith.

The car fires up.

ALEX

Yes, yes, there is a god. Thank you god.

NOAH

That is the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard.

RHYS

Just leave it turn over for a while.

ALEX

Rhys, you’re a legend, you know that. You’ve saved my life. You know what; my first born child will be called Rhys. My second born child will be called Rhys.

RHYS

I’ll settle for a slab of beer.

COLLEEN comes out.

COLLEEN

Rhys Sutherland, have you got any idea what time it is?

RHYS

Closing time Colleen. We’re finished.

COLLEEN

Well, it’s a bit late, isn’t it? It’s time to get up.

RHYS

I think you better get out of here mate.

ALEX

Yeah, I’m on my way. Come on mate, I’ll give you a lift.

RHYS

Hey, you be nice and careful, now, remember. You’re very tired.

ALEX

Rhys, careful is my middle name. Hey, thanks again.

COLLEEN

I don’t know how I’m supposed to put in a decent days work after night like that. I really don’t.

RHYS

Tell me about it Colleen. Tell me about it.

LONDON-THE HOTEL

DON, NICK, IRENE and HAYLEY come out a lift.

DON

I thought this afternoon we’d take a London tour bus. It’s a very good way of working out where everything is in relation to everything else.

IRENE

We’re totally in your hands Don.

ROBBIE is behind the counter.

HAYLEY

There you go.

ROBBIE

Oh, thanks. Oh, there was a phone call for you earlier from Australia.

HAYLEY

Noah.

ROBBIE

Yeah, it was. I didn’t put it through to you because you said you were going to be sleeping.

HAYLEY

Yeah, no, that’s right, thank you. He’s my ex.

ROBBIE

Oh, I thought so.

WILL has joined them.

IRENE

Oh, there you are. Come on, lets go, go, go.

THE LAWSON HOUSE

NOAH walks in. He uses the phone.

LONDON-THE HOTEL

The phone rings. ROBBIE answers it.

ROBBIE

Gravison Edwardian Hotel. Noah, hi. Yeah.

Listen, you’re not going to believe it, but they’ve just left. Hold on a sec, I’ll see if I can catch them, yeah.

THE LAWSON HOUSE

NOAH is on the phone.

LONDON-THE HOTEL

ROBBIE runs out onto the street. He can’t see them

ROBBIE

Sorry, they must have gone straight down into the tube.

THE LAWSON HOUSE

NOAH is on the phone.

NOAH

Oh, typical, uh.

ROBBIE

What time is it now? You must have just got up.

NOAH

Mate, I haven’t even been to bed yet. I’ve been up all night working on my mate’s car. We’ve been racing it.

LONDON-THE HOTEL

ROBBIE is on the phone.

ROBBIE

What? Like in American Graffiti?

Yeah.

LONDON-A BUS

DON, IRENE, WLL, NICK and HAYLEY are on a bus.

DON

Of course, what you’ve got to remember is that London like all medieval cities was originally walled and fortified. So when you see signs like Highgate, Newgate, Nottinghillgate, that’s exactly what they were. They were gates in the cities wall. They’ve long since gone now and some of the major ring roads occupy the sites where once the walls were. That was the only way they could make room to construct the roads without demolishing the buildings at the same time.

NICK

Hey, are we any where near Jack the Ripper?

DON

No, no, Nick. That was the East End.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

LEAH and ALEX are in the kitchen.

ALEX

Leah, I am tired. OK, I am like the most tired I’ve ever been. I need some serious sleep.

LEAH

What? Why are you so tired? I thought you were supposed to be like sleeping place.

ALEX

Yes, well obviously I’d didn’t get enough sleep, did I?

LEAH

Yes, obviously.

ALEX

Man, this is like that torture thing. What’s it called? Sleep.

LEAH

Deprivation.

ALEX

Deprivation, thank you. You still think I was out all night with some chick, don’t you? Well you know what, I was. You were right Leah. You were right all along. I was out with some chick. Now can I go to bed?

LEAH

You’re never borrowing the car again Alexi.

ALEX

Well, you know what. That is so fine with me because I don’t want to go near that thing.

LEAH

No, no, I’m actually serious.

ALEX

Really, because so am I, believe me.

LONDON-A BUS

WILL and IRENE are on the bus along with HAYLEY, DON and NICK.

IRENE

For god’s sake Will. If I’m imagining things then Hayley is, Nick is and pretty damm sure Don is as well. We can’t all be wrong.

WILL

Look, I’ve just got a lot on my mind at the moment.

IRENE

Oh, geez, like we haven’t spotted that one. Do you mind sharing it with us?

WILL

I can’t.

IRENE

Will, I’ve got news for you. You are sharing it with us. You’ve been sharing it with us ever since we left flippin’ Australia. Now I’ve got to tell you, it’s driving us up the wall.

DON

I don’t know what Portobello means. I should I suppose. Em, my guess would be port meaning portal or also gate and.

DON sees a woman off the bus. The woman looks like MARILYN.

DON

Oh, my god. Stop it, stop it. Stop the bus.

IRENE

Don, Don, for god sake. What is it?

The bus stops and WILL, DON, IRENE, NICK and HAYLEY all run off the bus.

IRENE

Don, what is it?

LONDON-A SQUARE

DON, IRENE, HAYLEY, NICK and WILL are all there.

IRENE

Don.

DON

You didn’t see her. Well, you must have.

IRENE

Seen what love?

DON

Marilyn, it was Marilyn.
