THE LAWSON HOUSE

SEB and NOAH are they.

NOAH

Don’t you have any homework to do?

SEB

No.

NOAH

Yeah, well someone’s trying to study OK.

SEB

Sorry.

NOAH turns the TV off. JUDE walks in.

NOAH

Hey.

JUDE

Hey. Get up.

NOAH

Oh, what are you doing here? I was going to pick you up.

JUDE

Yeah, I managed to get an earlier flight. So was there any dramas while I was away?

NOAH

No, no, everything’s been pretty quiet here. So how was your interview?

JUDE

Yeah, it went really well, I just have to do well in my HSE’s, so I’ve got a chance at the scholarship.

NOAH

And how was Melbourne?

JUDE

Yeah, it’s a great city, but I have to admit, got pretty sick of my own company. Be different when Shauna’s there with mw. I’m just going to give her a call, let her know I’m back.

NOAH

Yeah, right.

JUDE goes into the kitchen.

JUDE

G’day, hey babe, it’s me, I’m back. So give us a call when you get in. Love you, bye.

JUDE exits kitchen.

JUDE

Did you have any decent meals while I was away or was it nothing, but pizza the whole time?

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALEX walks in. LEAH is there.

ALEX

Hey Leah.

LEAH

Hey.

ALEX

Just received a call from Milo and he’s got a couple of off. He’s thinking of coming up to the Bay. Can we have him? Please.

LEAH

Of course Milo can stay with us.

ALEX

Great. OK. Thanks.

LEAH

Oh, the return of Milo and Otis. How cute. So when’s he coming?

They walk into the kitchen.

ALEX

He’s supposed to be getting here tonight actually.

LEAH

Oh, does he have a map?

ALEX

No, but I told him how to get here.

LEAH

Oh, that boy has got the worst sense of direction in the world.

FLYNN and SALLY walk into the diner.

SALLY

That was so good. I think I’ve got room for dessert though.  You going to have any? Flynn?

FLYNN

Oh, eh, sorry what?

SALLY

Em, just asking if you’re going to have any dessert.

FLYNN

No, no, I’m all right Sal.

SALLY

Something wrong?

FLYNN

Eh, no, I just

SALLY

Thinking about work aren’t you?

FLYNN

It’s all right. It’s just everything’s a bit too much for me this week. Gypsy leaving. It’s not going to get any easier.

SALLY

I’m sure Gypsy and Shelley will work things out. They have in the past. You better not be moping around like this tomorrow night.

FLYNN

No, no, no, one hundred percent attention.

LEAH walks up to them.

LEAH

Coffee? Dessert?

SALLY

Eh, I’m going to have a mud cake Leah.

LEAH

Sure no problem. Hey, how’s everything going at home, you know with Shauna.

SALLY

Well to be honest I haven’t really been paying attention.

LEAH

Aw, well I mean, I could be totally on the wrong track about this right, but the other day I kind of get the feeling that she was getting cold feet.

SALLY

Why? What did she say?

LEAH

Well nothing, it was just a feeling that I got. I don’t know. She said anything to you?

SALLY

I knew she had the jitters a few week backs, but I thought she was over that.  It’s not a problem now. Everything’s fine between them. Hey, have you noticed anything?

BRODIE walks in.

FLYNN

Em, no, probably just got used to it, just cold feet.

LEAH

Yeah, I guess you’re right. Hey sorry, I didn’t see you there. What can I get you?

BRODIE

Hello, can I just grab some orange poppy seed cake. Whatever you’ve got left.

LEAH

Sure sweetie.

SALLY

How’s that history assignment going?

BRODIE

Oh em, actually I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that Miss Fletcher. I’ve done it, but I know that it could be so much better if I just had a bit more time to polish it a bit.

SALLY

Well it sounds to me like you’re having trouble letting go. I’m sure it’s fine and it’s probably best not to start the new school term with a late assignment.

BRODIE

OK, thanks Miss Fletcher.

THE LAWSON HOUSE

JUDE is on the phone. SEB and NOAH are in the kitchen.

JUDE

Yeah, hi babe, it’s me again. Guess you’re not home yet. Hope you haven’t gone to the airport to meet me because as you can hear I’m not there.

SEB

You’ve got to tell him.

NOAH

No, we still don’t know anything for sure yet.

SEB

What more proof do you want? If it was me I’d want to know.

NOAH

How do you think he’s going to react if you start bad mouthing Shauna? Who do you think he’s going to believe, you or her? Right, we have to thing things through, very carefully, very carefully.

JUDE

What’s going on with you two?

NOAH

Nothing.

JUDE

Ah, so I’m going to have to guess am I?

SEB

Just getting paranoid in your old age.

JUDE

Fair enough, don’t tell me. Let’s hope Shauna rocks up soon, I don’t think I can stand much more of you tow in your riveting company. I’m going to grab a shower.

JUDE leaves.

NOAH

I’m going out OK, but if you say one word.

SEB

I won’t say anything.

NOAH

That’s right. I’ll cut your head off.

SEB

I said I wouldn’t say anything.

NOAH

Right.

SEB

So where are you going anyway?

NOAH

Eh, surf.

SEB

You’re going to see Hayley aren’t you?

NOAH

Might be.

SEB

You two back on together or what?

NOAH

We’ll see.

NOAH leaves.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

SALLY and FLYNN sit at a table eating cake.

SALLY

Hang on a second, you said you didn’t want any dessert.

FLYNN

Aw, a man can change his mind. After all, what is yours is mine, mines is yours.

GYPSY walks up to LEAH. COLLEEN is there.

GYPSY

Ah Leah.

LEAH

Hey.

GYPSY

Have you got a minute?

LEAH

Sure, have a seat.

GYPSY

Em, can we talk in private?

LEAH

Yeah, just go into the kitchen.

GYPSY goes into the kitchen.

LEAH

Em, can you guys hold the fort for a while? I’m just going to go and have a chat with Gypsy.

COLLEEN

Oh, nothing serious I hope.

LEAH goes into the kitchen.

SALLY

I’ll go and lend some moral support.

COLLEEN

What do you suppose that’s all about?

SALLY goes into the kitchen.

FLYNN

I wouldn’t have a clue Colleen.

ALEX and MILES walk into the diner. They sit at a table where NOAH and HAYLEY sit.

ALEX

Noah, Hayley, this is my mate, Milo.

They sit down.

MILES

His long lost best mate.

ALEX

I wouldn’t go so far as to say best, I mean we used to let him hang around to do all our homework.

MILES

Ah, sad, but true.

ALEX

Got this kind of delusion that he was smarter than the rest of us for some reason.

MILES

And I’ve managed to keep fooling them at Uni. I don’t know how?

HAYLEY

Oh, what are you studying?

MILES

I’m doing an arts degree in Adriatic languages. I’m going to Italy on exchange later this year. Had a bit of time off so thought I’d come and see what this one was up to.

ALEX

Time off, how can you tell the difference? I mean, thought Uni. was three years of time off.

MILES

True, true, beats working for a living though.

ALEX

I mean this way, you can bore girls in three different languages.

MILES

Yeah, I’m working on four, but I’m fluent in three. I guess you’re still grunting at them then.

ALEX

Miles, I don’t need the gift of the gab to work my magic mate.

HAYLEY

Oh please

LEAH, SALLY and GYPSY are there. COLLEEN walks in.

COLLEEN

Sorry to interrupt Leah.  I just need to put these dishes in the sink.  Is everything all right in here?

LEAH

Yeah, we’re fine thanks, Colleen.

GYPSY

What’s the matter Colleen? Couldn’t hear us through the doors.

COLLEEN

I don’t know what you mean.

GYPSY

I may as well tell you now, you’ll find out sooner or later.

SALLY

Gypsy don’t.

GYPSY

I just told Leah that Will’s actually the father of my baby. You happy now?

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

COLLEEN and SHELLEY stand at the door.

COLLEEN

I heard it from Gypsy herself. I always knew there was something sly and underhand about that girl. To go behind Dani’s back like that, the poor little thing must be devastated.

SHELLEY

Yeah, she is pretty upset and it’s only going to make things worse for Dani if people start gossiping about her so could you please keep this to yourself, at least until Will gets back.

COLLEEN

Oh yes, of course. Yes, you’re quite right. You know I can’t abide idle gossip. My lips are sealed.

COLLEEN leaves.

SALLY’S HOUSE

Outside are NOAH, GYPSY and HAYLEY.

HAYLEY

You really shouldn’t have done that.

GYPSY

Aw, she would have found out sooner or later.

NOAH

Yeah, but now the story is going to be right around Summer Bay by breakfast time tomorrow.

The door opens, SHAUNA comes out.

GYPSY

Hey, you going out?

SHAUNA

Em yeah, Jude’s back.

GYPSY

Have fun.

HAYLEY and GYPSY go into the house.

NOAH

Jude’s been trying to call you.

SHAUNA

Yeah, I know. I just got the message. I’m on my way over there now.

NOAH

He called ages ago

SHAUNA

I just got back.

Inside are GYPSY and HAYLEY. NOAH walks in.

GYPSY

I’m so glad Leah was so nice about it. Here you go.

HAYLEY

You really didn’t expect her not to be, did you?

GYPSY

Well, you know I have stuffed up everybody’s life.

NOAH

You know, these things happen. Anyone who doesn’t understand that is an idiot.

GYPSY

Well I’m glad I’ve got you guys on my side. I reckon after Colleen gets going tomorrow I might need you.

NOAH

Aw, look, don’t worry. If anyone starts throwing rotten food at you in the street just throw it back.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I’m so glad that Will’s the father and not that creep Andrew.

GYPSY

He wasn’t that bad.

HAYLEY

He was awful.

GYPSY

Yeah, he was awful, but he served a purpose. Oh and, em, I never actually did anything with him. It was a couple of dates that’s all.

HAYLEY

Good.

NOAH

Not that it’s any of our business anyway.

GYPSY

Well I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a few people around here making it their business. Wasting a lot of time and energy, but hey, you know, what’s new?

NOAH

Better no be trying it on when I’m around that’s all.

HAYLEY

Yep, I’m with him. Well you know what I mean.

THE LAWSON HOUSE

JUDE opens the door. SHAUNA comes in.

JUDE

Hello.

They kiss.

JUDE

I was just about to send out a search party for you. I called you.

SHAUNA

Yeah, I know.

JUDE

So are you hungry? Do you want to go out somewhere? Go out and eat. Man, I do not believe how much I missed you. I mean talking on the phone, it’s not the same is it. You feel like you’re further away. Hey, I got you a present. You ready. Snow falling on Flinders Street. OK, it’s a bit naff.

SHAUNA

Jude, stop OK. There’s something I have to tell you.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NOAH and HAYLEY are in the kitchen.

HAYLEY

Thanks for walking me home. You didn’t have to do that.

NOAH

I wanted to.

HAYLEY

Um, you want a drink, tea?

NOAH

Yeah, might as well.

HAYLEY

So it must be good to have Jude back.

NOAH

Yeah, he wasn’t gone for long, but, uh, I guess it’s good to have everyone back.

HAYLEY

Yeah, em, you seemed a little weird around Shauna before.

NOAH

Really.

HAYLEY

Yeah.

NOAH

I just wondered why she hasn’t called Jude back that’s all. So Gypsy seems to be handling things pretty good.

HAYLEY

Yeah, she’s tough, but I reckon what you said helped.

NOAH

Really, what did I say?

HAYLEY

Oh, uh, you were really nice.

NOAH

Yeah, well I meant it.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I know you did.

THE LAWSON HOUSE

JUDE and SHAUNA are there.

JUDE

Why?

SHAUNA

I can’t go through with the wedding knowing that I can’t make you happy.

JUDE

But you do make me happy. I’ve never been happier in all my life.

SHAUNA

I will make your life a misery Jude if I go through with this. You don’t deserve that.

JUDE

Look, it’s the wedding thing isn’t it? I mean, I understand, it’s you know, I shouldn’t have pushed you into it. We’ve been moving to fast, but we can change that. We can go back to the way it was before.

SHAUNA

It’s not the wedding.

JUDE

Look, I understand, I really do, you’re scared of getting stuck in a rut, but it’s not going to happen. I’ll get the scholarship in Melbourne and we’ll move down there and start all over.

SHAUNA

Jude, you’re not listening to me OK, I can’t be with you, I have to break up with you, none of this is right.

JUDE

None of this is right.

SHAUNA

Look, you’re a beautiful person, Ok and I really wish I could make things work with you, but I can’t go on pretending.

JUDE

Just tell me what I’ve done wrong and I’ll fix it.

SHAUNA

It’s nothing you can do.

JUDE

Shauna please, you’re it for me, there’s nobody else I want to be with.

SHAUNA

I’m sorry.

SHAUNA hands over the ring and leaves. JUDE looks at the ring. NOAH walks in.

NOAH

Hey man. Jude, what’s wrong?

JUDE

Shauna broke up with me. The weddings off. It’s all over.

NOAH

Did she say why?

JUDE

She says that she doesn’t make me happy. She does makes me happy. Why does she think I want to marry her? I thought maybe she was getting cold feet about the wedding, but I mean it wasn’t that either. I mean, it’s not that she doesn’t want to marry me. She doesn’t want to have a bar of me. How am I supposed to fix thing if she won’t let me know what I’ve done wrong?

NOAH

You haven’t done anything wrong. Just forget it. She’s not worth it.

JUDE

What did you say?

NOAH

You deserve better.

JUDE

Do you think you can make me feel better by slagging her off. I mean, don’t you get it, I love her. Like an hour ago I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with her. That doesn’t change just because we had an argument. I’ve got to figure out what I’ve done wrong so, you know, I can make it better.

NOAH

Do you really want to know?

JUDE

What do you know? Tell me.

NOAH

Seb says the twins saw Shauna coming out of Flynn’s caravan. They said she was crying. When Seb told me, I didn’t want to believe it, but then I saw them together on the beach. Look, I don’t know what they were talking about, but it looked serious.

JUDE

Flynn is my best mate. You reckon he’s been making moves on her. Is that what you are saying.

NOAH

Flynn wouldn’t do something like that.

JUDE

Well what then? Who, Shauna? Are you saying with Shauna.

NOAH

Don’t you get it. If she dumped you, there’s only reason.

JUDE

If you say one more bad word about Shauna.

NOAH

Where are you going?

JUDE

To talk to my best mate.

JUDE leaves.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

SALLY and FLYNN are there.

FLYNN

Aw, nice job. Where are the biscuits?

SALLY

Thank you.

JUDE walks in.

JUDE

You must be proud of yourself.

SALLY

Hey Jude, are you all right?

JUDE

Don’t listen to a word that this guy says Sal.

FLYNN

Aw, what’s going on here mate?

JUDE

Mate. I am not your mate. Not after what you’ve done.

FLYNN

OK, whatever you’ve heard mate, I promise you things aren’t the way you think they are.

JUDE

You’ve been making moves on my fiancée Flynn, hey. What way was that?

FLYNN

No, Sal. Sally, Sally. Is that what she told you?

JUDE

No, she didn’t tell me anything about you. She was way to busy breaking up with me.

FLYNN

Man, I’m sorry.

JUDE

Yeah, I bet you are. You must be happy now she’s a free agent. When were you going to break the news to Sal or were you just going to keep going behind her back.

FLYNN

OK, mate, calm down, listen. I promise you that nothing happened between me and Shauna.

JUDE

What was this interlude in your caravan all about?

FLYNN

I can explain that.

JUDE

You don’t need to explain to me anything. I know exactly what you’re on about.

FLYNN

Jude, stop. Just listen to me. Now, I don’t know what you think has been happening, but I swear to you I did not make any moves on Shauna. She got into a little bit of trouble, she got a bit drink. She needed somewhere to sober up.

JUDE

All right, so you took her back to your van. Then what happened?

FLYNN

I think you should be hearing this from her.

JUDE

I want to hear it from you.

FLYNN

Look, you don’t want to hear this.

JUDE grabs FLYNN by the shirt.

JUDE

Tell me.

SALLY

Jude don’t.

FLYNN

OK, OK, she has got it into her head somehow that she’s in love with me.

JUDE

You don’t even have the guts to tell me straight. You’re not worth it.

JUDE leaves and SALLY follows him.

SALLY’S HOUSE

GYPSY and SALLY are in the kitchen.

GYPSY

Was that you that I heard rumbling about this morning? Sal, what’s wrong?

SALLY

That was Shauna. I heard her go. She broke up with Jude because of Flynn.

GYPSY

What?

SALLY

Yeah, Jude’s a mess and he came around to the drop-in centre and accused Flynn of being with Shauna behind his back.

GYPSY

What did Flynn say?

SALLY

Oh, he said that Jude had got it all wrong. I just, I feel so stupid. I trusted him.

GYPSY

You don’t believe him.

SALLY

I don’t know what to believe anymore. What if I’ve done it again? What if I’ve got another Kieran on my hands?

GYPSY

No, you don’t have another Kieran on your hands. Flynn is nothing like Kieran. Don’t even think that. Look, I don’t know what’s going on with Shauna, but I know that Flynn is a decent guy who cares about you a lot.

SALLY

All this stuffs been going on and he hasn’t told me any of it. What’s he got to hide?

GYPSY

I can’t answer that for you Sal.

THE WHARF

JUDE sits and looks at the ring.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

LEAH and DON walk in.

LEAH

Well, I haven’t had a chance to talk to you about your trip. How was the launch?

DON

Oh, it was good. It went very well, thanks Leah.

LEAH

Yeah, well, you didn’t miss much here.

DON

Oh, I don’t think Colleen would agree with you.

LEAH

Sorry.

DON

I bumped into her on the way over here and, well, she was as subtle could, but for Colleen that’s almost impossible.

LEAH

Yeah.

DON

And she told me that Will was the father of Gypsy’s child.

LEAH

Yeah, that was a bit of a shock.

SHAUNA sits at a table. NOAH walks in.

NOAH

You kicked him in the teeth and you couldn’t tell him why.

SHAUNA

I don’t want to talk about this with you Noah.

NOAH

Yeah, you’re pretty good at not talking about things, aren’t you? You’ve got to tell him the truth. He thinks this is all Flynn’s fault. He is so in love with you that he can’t believe you’d do anything wrong, let alone chase after his mate behind his back. You know, you’ve already broken his heart. Do you want to stuff up there friendship too? If you have any decency, you go talk to him and set the record straight before you do anymore damage.

NOAH leaves.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

SHELLEY and GYPSY are in the office.

SHELLEY

I forgot to take a file home. You know, I really wish you hadn’t told Colleen about Will. I have asked her to keep it to herself, but I know she won’t be able to restrain herself.

GYPSY

Yeah, I know.

SHELLEY

I just wish you’d think before saying anything, you know, for Dani’s sake if not your own.

SHELLEY walks out the office. FLYNN is there. SALLY walks in.

SHELLEY

Oh, hi Sal.

SALLY

Hi.

SHELLEY leaves.

FLYNN

Hi, I’m glad you’re here.

SALLY

Yeah, well I  just wanted to get a few things straight in my head.

FLYNN

Of course.

SALLY

How long have you known that Shauna was in love with you?

FLYNN

Not long.

SALLY

Well, I knew she had a crush on you a while ago, but I thought she was over that.

FLYNN

Well, she told me that to.

SALLY

You knew about that.

FLYNN

Well something happened a little while ago and she told me how she felt about me, but I told her that I didn’t feel the same way and I never would and I thought that she had accepted that.

SALLY

If you knew how she felt about you, why did you take her back to the caravan? Why put yourself in that position?

FLYNN

She was upset, you know, she needed help.

SALLY

And that phone call the other night. That was her, wasn’t it?

FLYNN

Yes.

SALLY

Why didn’t you tell me? If everything was above board, why all the secrecy?

FLYNN

I just thought it was easier if you didn’t know.

SALLY

Well how many other things is it easier if I don’t know?

FLYNN

Sal, can we put it.

SALLY

Oh, and yesterday. When Leah was all worried about it. You just acted like everything was OK.

FLYNN

Sal.

SALLY

No, you’ve lied to me Flynn. You and Shauna have both lied to me. How am I ever supposed to trust you again?

THE WHARF

JUDE sits on the beach. SHAUNA walks behind him.

SHAUNA

Thought I might find you here.

JUDE

You know me to well. I’m a glutton for punishment.

SHAUNA

We need to talk.

JUDE

This is the spot. This is where it was all going to come good. You know, I never wanted to marry you so much.

SHAUNA

I haven’t changed my mind Jude. There is some things I didn’t tell you last night. Things that you need to know.

JUDE

What is it that you wanted to tell me? That you’ve been chasing some other guy behind my back. That you’ve been lying to me all the whole time. Tell me it isn’t true and maybe we’ve got something to talk about.

JUDE walks over to his bike. SHAUNA gets up.

SHAUNA

I never meant to hurt you Jude. I don’t know happened. Something inside of me changed and I couldn’t control my feelings. I’m sorry. I promise I will never stop caring about you.

JUDE

Your promises don’t mean much anymore, do they Shauna?

SHAUNA

Please, you’ve got to let me explain, Jude, please.

JUDE rides off on his motorbike. SHAUNA starts to cry.
