SALLY’S HOUSE

JUDE, SALLY, FLYNN and CARLY all walk in. CHARLOTTE is lying on the couch watching TV.

SALLY

Hey guys, keep the noise down. You’re going to wake the whole neighbourhood. Charlotte, I thought you were working tonight.

CHARLOTTE

I’m on call, trauma team.

CARLY

Oh, we asked these guys back for a drink. I hope you don’t mind.

CHARLOTTE

No, that’s fine.

JUDE

Just as well.

CHARLOTTE

How was the band?

CARLY

Oh, fantastic. Sal just about sung the roof off.

SALLY

Carly.

GYPSY walks out the bedrooms.

GYPSY

What’s going on?

SALLY

Sorry Gyps. Didn’t mean to wake you.

GYPSY

No, it’s all right. I had to get up to go to the toilet anyway. How was the formal?

JUDE

Awesome.

FLYNN

You missed Sal’s triumphant return to the stage.

CARLY

Yeah, she was great. Pity about the rest of the band though.

FLYNN

Excuse me.

SALLY

All right, who’s up for a drink?

JUDE

Ah, Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE

No, not for me.

SALLY

What about you Carly?

CARLY

Yeah, but I can get. I think Flynn could do with one though. Oh, come on Sal. You’ve been avoiding him all night. Just go and talk to the poor guy. At least go and give him a beer.

THE ROAD

ALF gets out of his ute and runs over to the Camara which has crashed into a tree

ALF

Strewth.

ALF runs back to his Ute to get his phone. BRODIE, ALEX and MILES are all in the car.

BRODIE

Miles. Miles. Miles.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SALLY, FLYNN, JUDE, CHARLOTTE, CARLY and GYPSY are there.

JUDE

I would like to propose a toast to our band and to our awesome singer.

CARLY

Yeah, go Sal.

SALLY

Thanks.

FLYNN

And I might like to propose a little toast now its officially after midnight. Yeah man.

SALLY

Yeah.

FLYNN

Happy birthday, to you.

They all say happy birthday.

CHARLOTTE

How does it feel to be a year older?

JUDE

Yeah, pretty good actually and it’s great that I’m still single.

CHARLOTTE’S pager goes off.

CHARLOTTE

Oh, sorry guys. No rest for the wicked.

SALLY

You’ve got to go to work.

CHARLOTTE

Yeah, afraid so. See you.

SALLY

See you later.

CHARLOTTE leaves. GYPSY and JUDE sit down.

GYPSY

Hey, you. Are you OK? I mean the whole Shauna marriage thing? That was today, wasn’t it?

JUDE

Yeah, yeah. I’m OK with it. I mean, I could have made the biggest mistake of my life today, but instead I’m here with my best mates.

GYPSY

Well, to friendship.

A ROAD

The scene of where the Camara has crashed. ALEX sits on the back of the ambulance. BRODIE lies on a stretcher. MILES is on the ground being treated by CHARLOTTE. ALF is also there. There is also numerous other medical staff there.

BRODIE

Leave me. I don’t need any of this.

CHARLOTTE

He’s arrested.

BRODIE

What?

CHARLOTTE

Come on.

BRODIE is held back from MILES by ALF.

CHARLOTTE

Defribulator, two hundred, clear.

BRODIE

What are they doing to him? No.

PARAMEDIC

There’s no pulse.

CHARLOTTE

Still in VF. Give it another two hundred.

BRODIE

Miles, no.

CHARLOTTE

Clear.

Sometime later CHARLOTTE is still trying to resuscitate MILES.

CHARLOTTE

Three sixty again clear. No change, come on, give him some more adrenaline. Come on.

PARAMEDIC

His pupils are fixed and dilated. There’s nothing there. I think you should stop.

BRODIE

No, you can’t stop, no, no.

CHARLOTTE

You’re right.

BRODIE

No, you can’t stop. You’ve got to do something.

CHARLOTTE

We’ve done everything we can Brodie.

BRODIE

Miles, Miles, please wake up. Miles, I love you. Do something.

CHARLOTTE

Brodie, I can’t do anything anymore.

BRODIE

Somebody do something.

ALEX looks worried.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS is on the phone. SHELLEY walks in.

RHYS

Yeah, OK.

Yeah, I’ll be right there.

RHYS hangs up.

RHYS

Brodie’s been in a car accident.

SHELLEY

Well, what happened? Is she all right?

RHYS

They won’t give us any details over the phone.

SHELLEY

Well was Dani involved?

RHYS

No, no, we’ve got to get to the hospital.

SHELLEY

Em, absolutely. You get ready. I’ll tell the girls.

THE HOSPITAL

SHELLEY, RHYS and CHARLOTTE are there.

CHARLOTTE

We’re keeping her in for observation, but as I said before she should be fine. She’s just in shock.

RHYS

Thank god.

CHARLOTTE

There is one more thing that you should probably know. There was a fatality at the site of the accident. Miles Alcott.

SHELLEY

Can we see Brodie?

CHARLOTTE

Sure.

SHELLEY

Thanks.

SHELLEY and RHYS leave. LEAH and VINNIE walk in.

LEAH

Hey, Charlotte. They hardly told us anything on the phone. What’s happened?

BRODIE lies in a bed. RHYS and SHELLEY walk in.

SHELLEY

Hey sweetheart.

BRODIE

Is Miles here? Is he OK?

SHELLEY

No, darling, he’s not.

THE BEACH

The next morning ASHLEY and DANI walk along the beach.

DANI

Bonfire on the beach. Perfect way to end the night, huh.

ASHLEY

Definitely.

DANI

What about Noah and Hayley winning cutest couple?

ASHLEY

Yeah, I couldn’t even believe they weren’t even talking to each other before that.

DANI

And Miles and Brodie. They’re so in love it makes me sick.

ASHLEY

Are you jealous?

DANI

Nah, I’m just really happy for them. And for me enjoying being single.

ASHLEY

Yeah, guys. Who needs them?

DANI

Girl power, uh.

THE HOSPITAL

VINNIE and LEAH are in a corridor.

LEAH
When are they going to let us see him?

VINNIE

Charlotte said it would just be a few minutes.

LEAH

A few minutes. What do you mean? It’s already been a few minutes.

VINNIE

Just let them do what they’ve got to do. He’s in good hands.

LEAH

How do you know that? What if there is complications?

VINNIE

Bubs, he’ll be fine. Just let it be.

LEAH

What about Brodie, poor thing? She must be devastated. I mean, he and Miles. They were so happy.

VINNIE

Yeah, I know.

LEAH

And Alexi’s going to be shattered. I mean, those guys, they’ve been friends ever since I could remember.

VINNIE

He’ll get through this. We’ll make sure he does.

LEAH

Vinnie, it’s not going to be that easy. I mean, these guys they did everything together when they were kids. You know, they went to soccer together, they compared together. Alexi spent more time over at Miles place than he did at ours growing up, you know. Those guys, they’d do anything for each other. They were like brothers Vinnie, you know.

VINNIE

Hey, hey, I know, I know, I know.

VINNIE and LEAH cuddle.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JADE, FLYNN, KIRSTY and RHYS are all sitting around the table. DANI and ASHLEY walk in. RHYS and FLYNN stand up.

DANI

What’s everyone doing up? What’s wrong?

RHYS

Aw, Dani. I’ve got some bad news. Brodie’s been in an accident.

DANI

What? Is she OK?

RHYS

Yeah, yeah, she’s in hospital. She’s OK, so is Alex. He was driving.

DANI

Well what about Miles?

RHYS

They couldn’t save him.

DANI

Oh my gosh.

ASHLEY

Miles is dead.

DANI

I have to go see Brodie.

RHYS

Yeah, sure. I’ll take you to the hospital right now.

KIRSTY & JADE
Dad, we want to come too.

RHYS

Hey, not all at once. I’ll come back for you two. OK. Mate, you feel free to stay here for as long as you like.

FLYNN

Thanks Rhys.

RHYS and DANI leave.

FLYNN

I’m glad you’re OK.

ASHLEY

Alex offered me a lift home. I could have been in that car.

A FLASHBACK-A ROAD

ALEX hits a pothole and loses control of the car. MILES and BRODIE are in the car. This is from Episode 3179.

BRODIE

Alex.

THE HOSPITAL

ALEX lies in bed asleep. LEAH and VINNIE are there. ALEX wakes up.

LEAH

Hey, hey Alex.

ALEX
I killed Brodie.

LEAH
No, no, no, no, Brodie’s OK. Brodie’s OK.

ALEX
It was an accident Leah.

LEAH
It’s OK. It’s all over now, OK.

ALEX
Where’s Miles?

LEAH
Em.

ALEX
Oh my god.

LEAH
It’s OK.

ALEX
Where’s Miles?

LEAH
Just relax, deep breaths.

BRODIE lies in her bed. SHELLEY is there. RHYS and DANI walk in.

DANI

How are you feeling? I’m so sorry. That was a really stupid question. I just didn’t know what to say. I’m so sorry.

BRODIE
Alex crashed the car.

DANI
Yeah, I know.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

WILL and GYPSY walk in.

WILL

Well the next time Sal decides to chuck a party, come stay at my house. Permanently if you want to.

GYPSY

You’re not going to let go of this, aren’t you?

WILL

I’m doing it in your best interests.

GYPSY

My best interests. You, me and the bubble in a tiny little room.

WILL

It’s bigger than you think and anyway it’s quiet.

GYPSY

Yeah, I suppose.

WILL

And I’m there.

GYPSY

Yes, you are.

ALF walks out of the kitchen.

WILL

Alf, I didn’t think you’d be working now.

GYPSY

Yeah, we heard about the accident.

ALF

Yeah.

WILL

You must be exhausted.

ALF

No, no, I’m fine. Tell you what though; it took the wind out of my sails. Must have happened when they were coming home from the formal. Absolute flamin’ tragedy.

GYPSY

It’s so horrible.

JOHN listens to them. ASHLEY walks in.

ASHLEY

Dad.

JOHN

Ashley. Oh, thank god.

ASHLEY

What’s wrong?

JOHN

Nothing, nothing, nothing’s wrong.

ASHLEY

Dad, what is it?

JOHN

The accident. I thought you. Don’t ever let anything happen to you, you hear me. I won’t let you out of my sight.

ASHLEY

Dad.

JOHN

Ashley, come home. Please come home. It would mean so much to me.

THE HOSPITAL

ALEX lies on the bed. VINNIE and LEAH are in the room,

ALEX

I’ve got to get out of here. I’ve got to the diner.

LEAH

No, no, no, it’s OK. Alf is taking care of that. You don’t need to worry about that. Do you want to talk about things? Alexi, sometimes it helps. Is there something on your mind or was there another car?

ALEX

No, nothing.

LEAH

Alexi.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

GYPSY and FLYNN are taking the sheets off the beds in the bedroom.

GYPSY

So are you going to tell me about it or do I have to prise it out of you?

FLYNN

Well, if I knew what you were talking about.

GYPSY

Flynn.

FLYNN

All right. She’s talking to me and that’s as far as it is for now.

GYPSY

Ah, well, it’s better than the door slamming in your face, really.

ASHLEY walks in.

FLYNN

Ash, what are you doing here?

ASHLEY

Em, I’ve decided to try moving in with dad again.

FLYNN

Are you serious?

ASHLEY

Yeah, yeah. We had a bit of a chat about it at the diner and yeah, I think it’s worth a try.

FLYNN

Well if you think it’s the right move.

ASHLEY

Yeah. Look, I mean, I know how you feel about dad, but this feels right for me.

FLYNN

OK. Obviously you’ve thought about it. When do you leave?

ASHLEY

This afternoon.

FLYNN

Right, that’s soon.

ASHLEY

Yeah, well, look. I just figured that I’d be getting in the way at the Sutherland’s house after everything that’s happened. You know, I think this could be a good thing living with dad, Flynn. You know, I think it’s the next step, you know. I have to take the nest step and you know, fly the nest or whatever you counsellor types say.

FLYNN

You won’t forget about me, will you?

ASHLEY

How could I?

ASHLEY and FLYNN cuddle.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

CARLY and SALLY sit at a table.

CARLY
Well, this is my shout, OK.

SALLY
No, you flew all the way here to visit me. The least I can do is buy you lunch.

CARLY
Well, when you put it like that.

SALLY
I’m really glad that you came Carly. I’m really grateful.

CARLY

Well anything for my little sister.

ALF serves them.

ALF
There you go girls. I believe you knocked there socks off last night Sal at the formal.

SALLY
Oh yeah. How told you that?

ALF
Well word gets around.

SALLY
Yeah, well, Carly’s the one that put me up to it in the first place.

CARLY
I was not.

ALF

That would be right, you know. She’s always been a troublemaker.

SALLY
Yeah. You know what you were talking about yesterday about the alternatives to having children.

CARLY

What, adoption or fostering, yes?

SALLY
Yeah, you’re right. It’s a pretty wonderful thing to be able to do. I often think about what a fantastic childhood we had because of Tom and Pippa.

CARLY
Yeah, no shortage of love, was there. So what, are you going to rush off and foster some kids now, are you?

SALLY
No, but, em, it is something to think about it.

THE HOSPITAL

LEAH and VINNIE are in a corridor. VINNIE carries in some food.

VINNIE

Hey, princess, are you hungry?

LEAH

No thanks.

VINNIE

Well VJ might be. How’s Alex?

LEAH

I don’t know. Charlotte’s is checking up on him. I can’t believe it Vinnie. That one moment and his life is never going to be the same again. We shouldn’t have lent him the car. We should have known.

VINNIE

We couldn’t know it was going to happen. It was an accident.

CHARLOTTE walks through.

CHARLOTTE

Leah.

LEAH

Oh, hey Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE

Alex still has mild concussion so I’m going to keep him in overnight for observation. He should be right to go home in the morning though.

LEAH

Can we go and see him, through?

CHARLOTTE

Sure?

LEAH and VINNIE go into ALEX’S. CHARLOTTE leaves. Also in the corridor SHELLEY cuddles ASHLEY. JOHN and RHYS are there.

SHELLEY

Well you look after yourself OK. Don’t forget to keep up the counselling.

ASHLEY

I won’t.

RHYS

Good luck mate. You keep in touch.

ASHLEY

Yeah, I will. Do you think it’ll be all right if I went in and saw Brodie?

SHELLEY

Yeah, I think it would be fine.

ASHLEY walks away.

JOHN

I’m really grateful for all your help with Ashley.

SHELLEY

Well, Flynn did most of the work. We were just a supporting hand.

JOHN

Flynn.

RHYS

Oh, yeah, he was the one that picked her up off the street, got her through detox, kept her on the straight and narrow. Couldn’t have been easy.

JOHN
No, I imagine it wasn’t.

JADE, KIRSTY, DANI and ASHLEY are gathered around BRODIE’S bed.

ASHLEY

Maybe I can come back for the holidays or something.

DANI

Yeah, we’d like that.

ASHLEY

Are you going to be able to go home soon?

DANI

Ah, yeah, we’re going to go home tonight.

JADE

It was really nice having you here.

KIRSTY

Yeah.

BRODIE

I bet everything goes really well for you Ashley.

ASHLEY

Thanks Brodie. I hope everything works out for you too. OK, well bye.

KIRSTY & JADE

See you.

ASHLEY leaves and DANI shuts the door.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SALLY puts some flowers in a vase. GYPSY comes in.

GYPSY

Hello. Carly get off OK?

SALLY

Yeah, no problem. What are you doing home?

GYPSY

I had to leave of exhaustion. What’s with the flowers?

SALLY

I just thought I spruce the place up a bit. A change is as good as a holiday.

GYPSY

Speaking of change, em, I was wondering how you would feel if I moved out to Will’s place.

SALLY

To live.

GYPSY

It’s not that I don’t love being here and I know you’re going to be amazing with my baby and I’ll be over here all the time. It’s just I think I need to move closer to Will for the babies sake and mine and Irene will be so good with the baby especially with my mum not around.

SALLY

Are you finished? I think it’s a wonderful idea.

GYPSY

Really.

SALLY

Yeah, of course. You guys are a family now.

GYPSY

You’re so great. Do you know that?

SALLY

Yeah, I know.

THE SURF CLUB

FLYNN and JOHN are outside the surf club.

JOHN

Ashley’s just gone to get a drink.

FLYNN

Right.

JOHN

Nice place this town you live in.

FLYNN

Yeah, yeah. I like it. I got these. You might want to have a read.

JOHN

You reckon I could use a parent’s guide, eh. I should be all right. Shelley told me a few things and I’ll make sure she goes to Narcotics Anonymous.

FLYNN

Yeah, you’ll be fine. I’d just thought. There’s some numbers in there in case you want to talk to someone. I know you don’t approve of counsellors or counselling. Whatever, it’s just it can be hard to do by yourself, believe me.

JOHN

I never said I don’t approve of counselling or counsellors.

ASHLEY comes out of the surf club.

JOHN

Well I guess we best be off, ay. Why don’t you come up at Christmas time if you’ve got the time?

FLYNN

Thank you, I might.

JOHN leaves

ASHLEY

I’ll miss you.

FLYNN

Yeah, me too. You be good OK. Be sensible.

ASHLEY

Careful Flynn. You’re starting to sound like dad already. I’ll call you OK.

FLYNN

Yeah, make sure you do.

ASHLEY

It’s for you.

ASHLEY hands FLYNN a piece of paper. The car with her and JOHN drives off. FLYNN reads the letter.

ASHLEY

I used to be so angry. I just wanted to die. Gathering storm clouds under a clear summer sky. I couldn’t see blue because it was all black. Waiting in darkness for something to snap. Then you came along and thoughts started to turn. Somewhere inside me a flame started to burn. Now I can see the future. Now I’ve got hope again.

THE HOSPITAL

CHARLOTTE, RHYS and SHELLEY are talking in a corridor.

CHARLOTTE

We’ve booked her in for a follow-up appointment with the physiotherapist, but she’s definitely right to go home.

RHYS

Oh, that’s great news.

SHELLEY

Thanks Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE’S pager goes off.

CHARLOTTE

Excuse me.

RHYS and SHELLEY walk away. CHARLOTTE bumps into JUDE.

JUDE

Hey, Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE

Hey, what are you doing here?

JUDE

Ah, just picking up my pocket money.

CHARLOTTE
Uh.

JUDE

Cleaning cheque.

CHARLOTTE

Oh, all right.

JUDE

Are you OK? You look a little bit out of it.

CHARLOTTE

Thanks.

JUDE

No, didn’t mean it like that. It’s just like you could use a break.

CHARLOTTE

Yeah, well if I could.

JUDE

I heard about the accident. It must be hard.

CHARLOTTE

Yeah, well its part of my job. You know, I’ve got to deal. Anyway, I better go.

JUDE

Hey, Charlotte. When are you going home?

CHARLOTTE

Supposedly three hours ago.

JUDE

When they finally do let you go home, how about I bring over a pizza or something?

CHARLOTTE

Yeah, OK. That would be great.

THE BEACH HOUSE

GYPSY looks in WILL’S room. WILL walks up behind her.

WILL

Gyps, what are you doing here?

GYPSY

Well if we got rid of her and maybe opened the window to let some of the boys smell out. Yeah I don’t see why I couldn’t move in here.

WILL

You serious?

GYPSY

Oh, and they’d be a strict ban on those girl magazines, sorry sports magazines.

WILL

You seriously want to do this?

GYPSY

If you still want me to.

WILL grabs the magazines.

GYPSY

What are you doing?

WILL

Getting rid of those sports magazines.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

SALLY walks in. ALF is there.

SALLY

Hey, Mr. Stewart.

ALF

Aw, g’day Sal. What can I get you?

SALLY

Nothing actually. I just wanted to come and thank you for helping to get Carly visit. It was really good to see her.

ALF

Aw, think nothing of it. Actually Don organised most of that anyway. It’s just good to see that smile back on your face.

SALLY walks over to the table where FLYNN is sitting.

SALLLY

Hey, what are you reading?

FLYNN

A note from Ashley. She left this afternoon with dad.

SALLY

How are you holding up?

FLYNN

Yeah, she’s going to be good.

SALLY

No, I meant you. How are you doing?

FLYNN

Honestly. I could do with company.

SALLY

Well I guess that can be arranged.

SALLY sits at the table.

THE HOSPITAL

DANI, BRODIE, RHYS and SHELLEY are in a hospital room. RHYS opens the door.

DANI

I’m so glad you’re going home. I hate hospitals. Dad said he’d cook his special pasta. You’re favourite.

SHELLEY

You all right sweetheart?

BRODIE

Yeah.

They walk out the room. They bump into ALEX, LEAH and VINNIE who are walking along the corridor.

ALEX

Brodie.

BRODIE turns her back to ALEX.

ALEX

Brodie, I’m sorry.

DANI

Would you leave her alone, all right? This is all you fault.

RHYS

Dan.

LEAH

Don’t you dare talk to him like that? You don’t know what he’s been through. The last thing he needs is you blaming him.

VINNIE

Bubs, just take it.

ALEX

Leah, she’s just telling the truth, It is all my fault. I killed Miles.
