Scripts - Episode 3190

THE HOSPITAL

VINNIE, LEAH and HELEN are there.

VINNIE

Breath in and out babe. Just breathe in and out. That’s it. You’re doing really well.

CHARLOTTE comes in.

CHARLOTTE

How’s it all going?

HELEN

She’s feeling everything. Why you don’t give her some drugs I’ll never know?

VINNIE

Babe, you look so good.

LEAH

Will you stop shoving that camera in my face?

VINNIE

Hey.

LEAH

How much longer is this going to take?

CHARLOTTE

I’ll just do a quick examination and see how you are progressing. Is that fine with you?

HELEN

Come on sweetheart.

VINNIE

Oh, yeah babe.

HELEN

Here you go.

VINNIE

One, two, three.

LEAH

I’ve got a feeling that we’re nearly there yet.

VINNIE

That’s a good girl.

LEAH

Thank you.

LEAH is now in the bed.

CHARLOTTE

Thanks Vinnie.

HELEN

Vinnie, Vinnie, she doesn’t have to go through all this. It’s the twenty-first century.

VINNIE

Mrs P., its’ called a natural birth.

HELEN

Natural birth, she’s tried long enough and hard enough. What is she trying to prove?

VINNIE

I think she’s doing fine.

HELEN

That’s easy for you to say.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

CHRIS and ALEX are there.

CHRIS

Hey Alex man. I found some mozzarella in the back. Do you want a sandwich or something? Want a juice or a tea? Man, come on, you’re starting to scare me.

ALEX

Chris, just go to the hospital or something, man.

CHRIS

I’m not leaving you alone like this. Talk to me about it.

ALEX

Talk, what’s talking going to do?

CHRIS

Can’t do any harm.

ALEX

I tried talking to Brodie about it, tried to give her some money for that memorial she’s doing.

CHRIS

Yeah.

ALEX

And I found just how much she hates me Chris.

CHRIS

Yeah, but she’s still hurting, bro. You’ve got to give her a couple if weeks.

ALEX

Man, she has every right to hate me. I killed the guy OK.

CHRIS

Aw, that’s crazy and you know it.

ALEX

Look, just don’t tell me what I know, OK.

CHRIS

Hey, what was Miles like? Uh, he was one of the most positive guys ever. Out there man, doing it, grabbing life with both hands. That’s what he was like, so if you want to honour his memory then it’s your duty, your absolute duty to do the same with yours. You hearing me or what?

ALEX

Chris, go to the hospital, OK.

CHRIS

Well, you going to come?

ALEX

No, I’m not.

CHRIS

Well I’m not going anywhere. You want a sandwich?

ALEX leaves.

THE HOSPITAL

VINNIE, LEAH, HELEN and CHARLOTTE are there.

LEAH

So, how many centimetres am I? Nine? Ten?

CHARLOTTE

Probably three actually.

LEAH

Three. Are you serious?

CHARLOTTE
The initial stages can be very slow.

LEAH

Aw.

CHARLOTTE
You’re doing very well. You’re handling the contractions beautifully.

LEAH

All that for three centimetres.

CHARLOTTE

Slow and steady. It’s a good way to be. I’ll be back and look at you later.

LEAH
OK.

CHARLOTTE walks out the room.

VINNIE

Did you here that, bubs? Put your hands up if you’re the greatest.

LEAH
Aw, here comes another one.

HELEN
Aw. Oh, Vinnie, get the dolphin.

VINNIE
Eh.

HELEN

The dolphin.

VINNIE
Here we are. Where do we put it?

HELEN

Give it to me. Come on darling. Breathe.

VINNIE
Breathe.

THE BEACH HOUSE

WILL, NICK and HAYLEY are there.

NICK

You never do that for me.

WILL

As soon as you get pregnant mate. It will be my pleasure.

The phone rings.

WILL

Hey, I’ll get it.

NOAH walks in.

HAYLEY

Hello, you’re up early.

NOAH

Yeah, I thought you might want some moral support before you sell your first big artwork.

HAYLEY

I think you mean if, don’t you. He’ll probably hate it.

NOAH

Hey, I thought I was the one with the doubts.

HAYLEY

Yeah.

NOAH

Come on. I thought you said if it doesn’t work out, so what?

HAYLEY

Yeah, I know Noah, but when it comes down to it, I really want him to like it.

WILL

Really. All night. Oh, man. Yeah. It’s Vinnie.

HAYLEY

Oh, has she had it yet?

WILL

No, not yet.

Yeah.

Aw, really.

You hang in there man.

No, nothing’s happened here.

Yeah, I love you to Vinnie.

Bye.

WILL hangs up.

HAYLEY

So?

WILL

So, Leah’s been in labour for fifteen hours.

HAYLEY

Oh, you’re kidding.

WILL

And Vinnie reckons that she’s only half way through it. I don’t know how he’s doing it.

HAYLEY

Yeah, it’s tough being a birth support person. Em, where is the milk? Aw, Nick. Good one.

NICK

Hayley, Irene’s gone shopping. She’ll get some more.

GYPSY walks through.

WILL

Hey, I thought I was meant to bring brekkie into you.

GYPSY

Ah, I might spew it.

WILL

Well, you’ve got to build your strength up for labour.

GYPSY

Yeah, I think it’s started.

WILL

You sure?

HAYLEY

Gypsy.

WILL

How longs it been going?

GYPSY

Em, most of the night I think.

WILL

Well how come you didn’t wake me? I mean how far up have the contractions come? Have your waters broken?

GYPSY

Em, can we talk about this on the way to the hospital.

WILL

Yeah. Absolutely. Irene’s got the car.

HAYLEY

Em, look, take mine.

WILL

I’ll get the stuff, I’ll get the stuff.

NOAH and WILL run away. GYPSY pants.

THE HOSPITAL

HELEN and THEO sit in a corridor.

THEO

Chris called. He’ll be in later.

HELEN

Alexi.

THEO

Well he’s gone to work. Someone’s got to keep the diner running.

HELEN and THEO kiss. VINNIE walks along the corridor. HELEN runs up to him.

HELEN

Oh, Vinnie. What’s going on? Is everything all right? Has anything happened?

VINNIE

Situation unchanged.

CHARLOTTE walks up to VINNIE.

VINNIE

Listen, listen, doc. I hear what you’re saying about this slow birth first, but Leah, she’s really hurting in there.

CHARLOTTE

I know Vinnie, but she’s coping really well. Everything’s completely normal. There’s no reason for you to worry.

VINNIE

OK, OK. And VJ’s he’s fine with all this, is he?

CHARLOTTE

VJ is absolutely fine. His heart rate is strong. All the signs are good. OK, we’ve just got to let nature to takes it’s course.

WILL and GYPSY walk in.

CHARLOTTE

Have contractions started?

GYPSY

Em, yeah, they’ve slowed up a bit now, but they’ve been on and off all night.

CHARLOTTE

OK, all right. I’m just going to get Hannah to settle you into a room. I’ll be in in a minute, all right.

CHARLOTTE walks away.

GYPSY

Ah, how’s Leah?

VINNIE

Leah, aw, she’s, she’s, she’s great. Fresh as a daisy.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

CHRIS knocks on the door. SHELLEY walks up to them.

CHRIS

Hello Mrs Sutherland. Is Brodie in?

SHELLEY

Ah, yeah. Brodie.

BRODIE walks out the kitchen.

CHRIS

I was wondering if I could talk to you.

SHELLEY

I’ll be upstairs if you need me.

SHELLEY walks out.

CHRIS

I was just on my way to the hospital. Leah’s gone into labour.

BRODIE

Right, em, well give her my best when you see her.

CHRIS

Well, yeah, yeah, sure, but that’s not why I dropped by though.

BRODIE

I didn’t think so.

CHRIS

Alex had a bit of a breakdown after he came to see you last night.

BRODIE

And.

CHRIS

Well he’s holding it together this morning, just, but he insisted on going to work. He’s no where near getting there, getting over what happened to Miles.

BRODIE

Yeah, that makes two of us.

CHRIS

Look, I know you’re angry, but why are being so hard on him Brodie. It’s just not fair, it’s not fair.

BRODIE

Miles is dead Chris.

CHRIS

Brodie how would you feel if you had killed your best friend.

BRODIE

I’d never forgive myself.

CHRIS

And neither will Alex. If there was anything he could do to change what happened, anything at all, he’d do it.

BRODIE

Look, I’m sure you’re right OK, but it’s pointless to even think about changing the past.

CHRIS

Exactly, which is why both of you have to move forward. Maybe you should try getting through this together. It’s what Miles would have wanted.

BRODIE

Is that all?

CHRIS

Yeah, that’s all. I better get going to the hospital.

THE HOSPITAL

GYPSY is on a bed. CHARLOTTE and WILL stand beside the bed.

GYPSY

How’s the baby?

CHARLOTTE

Strong and healthy. Can you hear him?

GYPSY

I don’t know what happened to the contractions. They kind of faded out when we got to the car.

CHARLOTTE

It’s probably because I don’t think you’re in labour yet.

WILL

The contractions were going all night.

CHARLOTTE

Yeah, that’s probably because they were preliminary ones. Pre labour can come and go. I think it will be a while yet before you go into what we call established labour.

GYPSY

So it’s just a false alarm.

CHARLOTTE

Hmm.

GYPSY

Oh, great. Well I feel stupid.

CHARLOTTE

Don’t. Lots of first time mums jump the gun. Better to be safe than sorry.

GYPSY

Yeah, I guess so.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NOAH and HAYLEY wrap HAYLEY’S painting. NICK is on the phone.

NICK

OK.

I’ll see you soon.

Bye.

NICK puts the phone down.

HAYLEY

Well.

NICK

False alarm. They’re coming home.

HAYLEY

Aw, no, poor Gypsy.

NOAH

Yeah, well which gives us more time to concentrate on this. More tape up this end. What’s wrong?

HAYLEY

I don’t know if I really want to sell it now.

NOAH

You’re kidding me.

HAYLEY

Yeah. It feels a bit like I’m selling of my baby.

NOAH

Don’t you start getting all clucky on me.

HAYLEY

No, no, no, no, no. You know what I mean. It’s my own creation and now I’m never going to see it again. Hey, maybe he’ll hate it.

NOAH

Half an hour ago, you wanted him to love it.

NICK

Artists. Hopeless.

IRENE walks in carrying the shopping.

IRENE

Aw, hello. A hand please.

NICK

Irene, Irene, Will’s taken Gypsy to the hospital.

IRENE drops the shopping and runs out.

HAYLEY

No, no, Irene wait. Nick’s just teasing.

IRENE

What? They’re not on their way  to the hospital.

HAYLEY

They were. It was a false alarm. They’re coming home.

IRENE

Yeah, you can yuck it up shorty, but I’m telling you now, if there’s any eggs broken it’s coming out of your pocket. Clown. Aw, god, I tell you what. I could really do with a cuppa. Supermarket was like a madhouse. Why do I get the feeling that you want a piece of me?

HAYLEY

Yeah, I’m sorry to ask, it’s just that Will and Gypsy have my car and I don’t know how long they’re going to be and Mr. Sullivan is expecting me.

IRENE

And you want me to drive you over there.

HAYLEY

Yeah, it won’t take long.

IRENE

OK, then. Bring the masterpiece through. Cup of tea can wait.

HAYLEY

Come on.

IRENE

Oh and em, you won’t mind picking up the groceries and putting them away will you.

HAYLEY

Ha. ha.

IRENE, HAYLEY and NOAH walk out.

THE HOSPITAL

VINNIE, HELEN and LEAH are there.

LEAH

I’m so sick of this.

VINNIE

You’re doing really well.

HELEN

Darling, I think you should lie down for a while. Vinnie.

VINNIE

Yeah. Is there anything you want?

LEAH

I just want it to be over.

VINNIE

One, two, three.

VINNIE helps LEAH onto the bed.

VINNIE

You’re really tired aren’t you. Just take it easy. I’ll get you something to drink babe.

HELEN

Aw, this is ridiculous. She needs something for the pain, not fruit juice.

LEAH

I just want it to be over.

HELEN

Did you hear that? She wants it to be over. I’m going to get the doctor.

VINNIE

She wants to do it without intervention. It’s all part of the birthing plan.

HELEN

Did your birthing plan include eighteen hours of non-stop pain? Vinnie, she needs gas. She needs an injection. How can you bear to see her suffer like that?

VINNIE

Like I said, this is the way she wants to do it. If you don’t like it stand outside with you husband.

HELEN

Don’t you dare say something like that.

LEAH

Shut up, both of you. I’m trying to have a baby here.

HELEN

Sweetheart.

VINNIE

Babe.

LEAH

Aw, here we go again.

THE BEACH HOUSE

GYPSY and NICK are in the living room. WILL is in the kitchen.

NICK

So, no baby until further notice.

GYPSY

Mmm, seems that way.

NICK

So, it could be days, weeks then.

GYPSY

Not weeks. Another day I might be able to handle.

NICK walks through to the kitchen. WILL walks out.

WILL

Where are you going?

NICK

A walk. The tensions getting too much for me.

WILL

When the going gets tough the tough goes for a walk.

NICK walks out.

WILL

I got you a sandwich with no cheese, look.

GYPSY looks like she is in pain.

WILL

Was that what I thought it was?

GYPSY

It was nothing.

WILL

It didn’t look like nothing. Are you sure you don’t want to go to hospital?

GYPSY

No, no. This feels exactly like the last lot so I don’t want to look like an idiot twice.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BRODIE sits on the couch looking at photos. SHELLEY walks in.

SHELLEY

Are you OK? How was it with Chris? He didn’t upset you, did he?

BRODIE

No. He, em, think I’m being too hard on Alex.

SHELLEY

I see.

BRODIE

Apparently he had some sort of, em, breakdown last night.

SHELLEY

Is he all right?

BRODIE

I think so. Chris thinks Alex and I should work through things together.

SHELLEY

And what do you think?

BRODIE

I think that Alex obviously doesn’t know how I feel and I should have made it clearer to him last night.

SHELLEY

And you’re going to tell him now.

BRODIE

Yes.

SHELLEY

Brodie.

BRODIE

Don’t worry. There won’t be anymore trouble.

BRODIE walks out.

THE HOSPITAL

LEAH, VINNIE and HELEN are there. LEAH is crying out in pain.

VINNIE

You’re doing really well. Nearly there.

CHARLOTTE walks in.

CHARLOTTE

The results from the examination are back all right.

LEAH

I can’t bare this. I can’t bare it. I just want it to stop. Do something to make it stop?

VINNIE

You want something. You want something painkillers or something.

LEAH

I don’t care.

HELEN

Aw, my goodness.

VINNIE

Doc, she wants some painkillers. She needs them now. Doc, listen to me.

CHARLOTTE

Hey, I’m afraid it’s a bit late for anything like that now Vinnie. Leah, you’re fully dilated. You’re very close to having your baby.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

COLLEEN and ALEX are in the kitchen.

COLLEEN

Leah must be so excited. The day Lancie was born was the happiest day of my life.

ALEX

Table six.

COLLEEN

Aw, a baby’s such a cause for joy don’t you think?

ALEX

Table six, come on, please Colleen.

IRENE, NOAH and HAYLEY sit at a table. DANI serves them.

IRENE

Thank you darl. You’re a lifesaver.

NICK runs in.

NICK

Hey, how did it go? He paid you that much.

NOAH

Yeah. He said it was remarkable and it looked good.

NICK

It was just paint on canvas.

NOAH

Yeah, but that’s what they said about Picasso.

NICK

Exactly, it was a scam. I might get into painting myself.

IRENE

Oh, please. In your dreams Shortie.

COLLEEN is at the counter. BRODIE walks in.

BRODIE

Colleen, hi. Is Alex around.

COLLEEN

Oh, he’s in the kitchen, but I don’t think you should disturb him.

BRODIE walks into the kitchen.

BRODIE

Alex, hi. I hear you’re about to be an uncle.

ALEX

You want something.

BRODIE

I just got this photo of Miles from the formal and I thought you might want it.

ALEX

I just don’t understand why you’re giving me this.

BRODIE

I’ve just got heaps of photos from the formal.

ALEX

No, you’re not answering my question. Why are you giving me this photo?

BRODIE

You still think I hate you because of what happened to Miles.

ALEX

Well you made that pretty clear yesterday, yeah.

BRODIE

Alex, I don’t hate you and I’m sorry for what happened yesterday, but the accident was your fault.

ALEX

You think I don’t know that.

BRODIE

When the court case comes about I hope you get the punishment you deserve. Maybe then I’ll start to think about forgiveness. See you later.

BRODIE walks out.

THE BEACH HOUSE

GYPSY and WILL are in their bedroom.

WILL

Hey, I’ll do that.

GYPSY

Hey, that’s all right. I’ve got it.

GYPSY holds her stomach and then looks at WILL.

WILL

I’ll get the car.

GYPSY

Good idea.

WILL walks out.

A ROAD

WILL and GYPSY are in HAYLEY’S car. GYPSY screams.

GYPSY

Will, something’s happening. We have to stop.

WILL

Wait. The hospital’s not that far, OK.

GYPSY

No, no, something’s happening now.

WILL

Just wait. Just a few more K’s to go. OK, just breathe, all right.

GYPSY

You’ve got to stop. You’ve got to stop.

GYPSY screams.

GYPSY

Pull over now, please.

WILL stops the car. GYPSY screams.

WILL

All right. I’ll call the ambulance.

WILL and GYPSY get out the car.

WILL

Do you want to lie down?

GYPSY screams.

WILL

Em, are you OK? Over here, over here. Do you want to lie down?

GYPSY

Will, this can’t happen here. This can’t happen here. What if something goes to wrong? What about our baby?

GYPSY sits down against the car.

WILL

Gypsy, look at me all right. Everything will be fine, OK. Everything will be all right.

GYPSY screams.

THE HOSPITAL

LEAH, VINNIE, HELEN and CHARLOTTE are there.

CHARLOTTE

Leah, you’re really close. From the next one I want you to take big breaths and push.

VINNIE

Its nearly there babe, nearly there.

CHARLOTTE

Leah, that’s wonderful. I can see the head.

HELEN

Vinnie, you go. Come on sweetheart.

VINNIE

Come on babe.

HELEN

Yes you can. You’re my beautiful strong baby girl and you’re going to have your baby now. Push.

VINNIE

Come on.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE, HAYLEY and NICK walk in.

IRENE

Will, Gypsy, we’re home.

NICK

You know, I’m seriously thinking of dropping Geography and picking up Art.

IRENE

Oh my god.

HAYLEY

What?

IRENE

This time it’s for real. Her waters have broken. Come on.

IRENE, NICK and HAYLEY all rush into the house.

THE HOSPITAL

LEAH gives birth to a baby boy. HELEN, CHARLOTTE and VINNIE are also there.

CHARLOTTE

There’s no problem with his breathing Leah.

LEAH and VINNIE kiss.

A ROAD

WILL and GYPSY are there. GYPSY screams.

WILL

It’s the head, it’s the head. Now, come on. Breathe deep. Keep pushing, keep pushing. Come on.

One more, come on. That’s it, come on.

GYPSY gives birth.

GYPSY

Is it OK? Is it breathing?

HAYLEY, NICK and IRENE are in the car.

HAYLEY

Do you reckon she’ll have had the baby by the time we get there?

IRENE

Love, she’ll be going some.

NICK

There’s the car.

WILL hands GYPSY the baby.

GYPSY

Hi, hi, hi.

HAYLEY, NICK and IRENE get out the car.

IRENE

Oh, love.

HAYLEY

It’s so tiny.

IRENE

Are you OK? Have you called an ambulance?

WILL

Yeah, it’s on its way.

HAYLEY

Is it a boy or a girl?

WILL

A girl.

HAYLEY

Gypsy, you’re so amazing.

NICK

Yeah, I’m overwhelmed.

WILL

Gypsy, I’ve been meaning to ask you something. I mean, you don’t have to answer it now. I’ve been thinking about it for a while. I’ve just been looking for the right moment.

GYPSY

It’s yes.

WILL

What?

GYPSY

I’ll marry you.

WILL

You’ll marry me.

GYPSY

Of course I will Will Smith. I love you.

THE HOSPITAL

VINNIE holds VJ. CHRIS, THEO, HELEN and LEAH are there.

THEO

To VJ.

CHRIS

To VJ.

HELEN

To VJ.

THEO

You’re going to be a big strong boy. I can tell.

VINNIE

Of course he is. He’s going to be strong just like his mother. You should have seen her Chris. She was like a, wasn’t she Helen?

HELEN

She was magnificent.

CHRIS

Still no complications.

HELEN

The specialists been to check. His lungs are fine.

ALEX walks in.

LEAH

Go and meet your nephew.

ALEX

Hey. Look at you. Welcome to the world.

LEAH

He’s got a middle name too. Alexi.

ALEX

Really. What about Chris? Doesn’t the older one get the name first.

CHRIS

Hey, I get the next one.

LEAH

Hey, what. You think I’m going to go through this again.

ALEX

Hey.

CHARLOTTE opens the door. INSPECTOR CARTER stands outside.

CHARLOTTE

Um, Vinnie.

VINNIE

Em, excuse me for just a minute.

VINNIE hands LEAH VJ.

VINNIE

I suppose you’re here about the double parking or the overdue library books, huh.

INSPECTOR CARTER

I’m sorry.

VINNIE

Geez, my wife’s just had a baby.

INSPECTOR CARTER

Maybe we should go outside.

VINNIE

No, we’ll do it right here, right now.

INSPECTOR CARTER

Vincent Patterson, I’m arresting you on suspicion of fraud. You’re not obliged to say anything unless you wish to do so, but what you say will be put in writing and given in evidence.

LEAH starts crying.

LEAH

Daddy’s coming. He loves you. Aw, Vinnie, Vinnie, Vinnie.
