THE PALACE

NOAH and HAYLEY are in bed. NOAH watches HAYLEY. HAYLEY wakes up.

HAYLEY

Hi.

NOAH

HAYLEY

How long have you been watching me?

NOAH

Not long.

HAYLEY

I could get used to this.

NOAH

Makes you wonder why we didn’t do it sooner. Ah, such a shame that we have to get up today.

HAYLEY

Yeah, we do. We’ve got to start getting things ready.

NOAH

Plenty of time.

HAYLEY

Yeah, but it’s our first party in our new home and you want it to be good, don’t you?

There is a knock on the door.

HAYLEY

Yes.

JOSH

Ah, Hayls, it’s just Josh. I need to have a shower. I just thought I’d find out if you guys needed to use the bathroom first.

NOAH

That’s all right man.

HAYLEY

This isn’t funny.

NOAH

Aw, that settles that then. Got to stay in bed now.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I guess we do.

JOSH is in the bathroom. DANI walks in.

JOSH

Hey, what are you doing here so early?

DANI

I couldn’t sleep.

JOSH

Aw, come in.

DANI

I just had to get out of the house for a while. The last thing that I need is a negative vibe about today from mum or dad.

JOSH

It’s not to late to change your mind. I’m sure Flynn can cancel Kane.

DANI

I definitely want to do this. Just I need some hugging.

JOSH

You’ve came to the right place for that. Do you want me to come to the mediation with you? I can wait outside and.

DANI

That would be really good. Thank you.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS and SHELLEY are in the kitchen.

RHYS

She’s had to go over to Josh’s for space. Doesn’t that prove she’s not ready for this mediation thing in the first place.

SHELLEY

It proves she’s worried about it, that’s all.

BRODIE, JADE and KIRSTY are at the table.

BRODIE

Maybe we should just skip the paint party guys and go to the drop-in centre instead. Dani might need our support.

SHELLEY

Girls. I understand how you feel, but if we antagonise Kane right from the start, the chances of this exercise helping Dani aren’t good.

JADE

See you at Hayley’s. We’re picking up the boys on the way.

BRODIE

See you.

KIRSTY

Bye.

JADE and KIRSTY walk out.

RHYS

Why do I get the feeling that that little speech was aimed at me as much as the girls?

SHELLEY

Because I think you have to consider how you’re going to approach today.

RHYS

I have to be there Shell. I know Flynn’s not going to let things get out of hand and he’s probably quite capable of taking care of that young mongrel, but I just want Dani to know that I’m there for her, you know what I mean.

SHELLEY

I know.

KANE’S HOUSE

FLYNN draws up outside in his van. He gets out. KANE walks out.

FLYNN

So, how are you feeling about everything?

KANE

Sensational man. Can we just go.

FLYNN and KANE get in the van.

THE PALACE

SALLY walks through the garden. CHARLOTTE and JUDE then walk round the corner.

CHARLOTTE

Sally.

SALLY

Ah, hello stranger.

CHARLOTTE

Very funny.

SALLY

It’s Charlotte, isn’t it? I seem to remember sharing a house with you.

CHARLOTTE

I’ll probably be home tonight, as a matter of fact.

SALLY

Are you sure you can find the way?

CHARLOTTE

Weird place. Great view.

JUDE

Yes, they affectionately call it The Palace.

SALLY

Yeah, well after we’re finished with it today, it might be.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI is walking in the garden. SHELLEY and RHYS are there.

SHELLEY

Hey sweetheart.

RHYS

Ah, good. You’re back.

DANI

I just went to see Josh. I’m sorry. I should have told you.

RHYS

That’s OK. We figured that’s where you were. If you’re still planning to go through.

DANI

Yes, I am dad.

RHYS

I just wanted to say, we should get going.

DANI

Yeah, I’m just going to get changed.

RHYS

That’s fine.

SHELLEY

Give her five minutes Rhys. She needs to get changed.

DANI walks inside.

THE PALACE

NICK, JADE, SEB and KIRSTY are there. NOAH walks down the stairs.

NOAH

Hey, does anyone of you guys want to come upstairs?

KIRSTY

Yeah, I’ll do it.

KIRSTY and SEB walk up the stairs. IRENE and HAYLEY are in the kitchen.

HAYLEY

These are great. Are you sure you can spare them?

IRENE

Yeah, absolutely darl. Look, I’ve been meaning to get meself a new set for yonks so you’ve kind of given me the excuse.

JOSH walks through.

JOSH

I’m going to duck off for the moment guys. Got to head off for the drop-in centre.

PARIS walks through.

PARIS

That’s lovely. We come over to paint your house and then you walk off and leave us to do all the work.

JOSH

Something like that.

JADE

Josh, mum and dad probably won’t let you stay. We wanted to go, but they said no.

JOSH

I just want to make sure Dani’s OK, that’s all.

JOSH walks out.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS hits the car. SHELLEY is there.

SHELLEY

For someone who didn’t want to go through with this, you’re in an awful hurry to get going.

RHYS

I just want it to be over. I can’t believe you’re as calm as you are.

SHELLEY

Trust me, I’m not calm on the inside.

DANI walks out.

DANI

OK. I’m ready. Lets go.

SHELLEY

Now you see why she had to get changed.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

RHYS, SHELLEY, DANI and JOSH are there.

RHYS

It’s almost half past.

SHELLEY

Josh, we really appreciate you being here, but.

JOSH

You’d both like me to leave.

DANI

Mum.

RHYS

Hey, Dan, it’s exactly what we’d said to the girls. We might  not get very far if Kane thinks we’re ganging up on him.

JOSH

I think I’d find it pretty hard not saying something to him.

RHYS

You’re not alone there.

JOSH

Can you call me when it’s finished?

RHYS nods.

JOSH

I’ll be straight over if you need me, OK.

JOSH walks out. KANE and FLYNN walk in. JOSH and KANE stare at each other.

FLYNN

Kane, let’s get you in here. Thank you.

KANE sees DANI. He smiles at her.

FLYNN

Kane.

RHYS

It’s all right sweetheart.

FLYNN walks in.

FLYNN

Morning. Are you ready?

DANI

Let’s do this.

FLYNN and DANI walk out. RHYS and SHELLEY cuddle.

THE PALACE

ALF is trying to move a boat. PARIS is there.

ALF

Give us a hand to get rid of this, will you Paris.

IRENE and HAYLEY are there. SEB and KIRSTY walk down the stairs.

KIRSTY

Is Lara coming?

SEB

She called me this morning. Her gran’s still sick so she’s probably going another couple of days.

KIRSTY

So, how’s your breath? Talk about garlic overload last night.

SEB

Tell me about it.

JADE is staring at a wall. NICK walks up to her.

NICK

It’s called a wall and you’ve got to put the blue stuff on it.

JADE

Sorry.

NICK

Are you OK?

JADE

Yeah, yeah of course. I’m just worried about Dani, that’s all.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

FLYNN, KANE and DANI are in the bedroom.

FLYNN

So this doesn’t turn into a free for all we’re just going to establish a few ground rules.

KANE

No biting, no kicking, no gauges.

DANI

This isn’t funny.

FLYNN

Ah, that’s exactly what I meant about rules. Now, each of you are going to get a chance to say what you want to say without interruption. Are you comfortable with that?

DANI

Yeah, I guess.

KANE

As long as I get my say.

FLYNN

Fine. Well Dan, seen as you asked for this meeting. I think you should start.

DANI

It’s pretty simply. You ruined my life.

KANE smiles.

DANI

What? You think I’m joking. I can’t sleep at night. I have nightmares. I can’t even have a normal relationship with my boyfriend. I think that’s pretty much ruined, but you know what really kills me, the fact that you got away with it and the courts said that what you did was OK and you know it wasn’t. You know that what you did was wrong and I want you to admit that. I want you to apologise for what you did.

FLYNN

Kane.

KANE

I just thought, you know what I thought, OK. I really thought that you liked me. You know, I thought that we had something going. You know, I’m not saying that that makes it right. I’m just saying it wasn’t all my fault. You invited me into your house Dani. You kissed me. What am I meant to think?

DANI

I invite someone into my house and what, I’m offering that I’m available.

FLYNN

Guys, guys.

DANI

This is sick. This is so.

FLYNN

Dani, Dani. Right, this is exactly what I meant about needing rules. It’s not going to work if it turns into a slagging match. OK, this isn’t about who’s to blame. It’s not about settling old score. It’s about working through what has happened and starting a healing process for you both.

THE PALACE

KIRSTY races around the house on NICK’S frame. ALF, SALLY, JADE, JOSH, NICK,, NOAH, SEB, IRENE, HAYLEY, BRODIE, PARIS and CHARLOTTE are there.

SALLY

Aw, Kirsty.

She bumps into ALF.

ALF

Aw, steady on kid.

NICK

Five point three seconds.

KIRSTY

OK, I would have massacred your time if Alf hadn’t got in my way.

SEB

Same conditions for everyone. It’s just the luck of the draw.

NOAH

Guys, this things not going to paint itself OK.

KIRSTY

Ah.

SEB

He’s taking slave driver lessons from you.

KIRSTY

Aw, get over yourself.

NOAH

Hey, you go over here and you come this way.

SEB

Ah.

SALLY and CHARLOTTE are in a bedroom.

SALLY

Morning sickness.

CHARLOTTE

I wish. Try, all day sickness.

SALLY

Why don’t you have a lie down? I’ll make sure nobody comes up this end of the house.

CHARLOTTE

That’s all right. I’ve been meaning to talk to you anyway.

SALLY

Yeah, I thought so. You’re thinking about moving in with Jude, aren’t you?

CHARLOTTE

No. Actually I was thinking more along the lines of Jude moving in with me. You and me. We’ve got more room and you know, save you having to find someone else.

SALLY

It wasn’t that long ago that you and Jude were on shaky ground. Do you really think this is a good idea?

CHARLOTTE

I do and if it doesn’t work out, it will be easier to ask him to move out than the other way round. You’re not going to get caught in the middle of something Sal, if that’s what you’re thinking.

SALLY

I was thinking that I was used to it being the girls house.

CHARLOTTE

I know. It will change the dynamics.

SALLY

I’m not saying no. I just need a bit of time to think about it.

CHARLOTTE

OK.

SALLY walks out.

SARAH MCKY DROP-IN CENTRE

DANI, KANE and FLYNN are in the bedroom.

KANE

All I’m saying is that, you know, I didn’t mean to hurt you. You know, I really didn’t.  I accept that I misread, but I honestly thought you liked me. You know, I honestly thought we had something going. You know, I left that day thinking, sweet. Everything’s finally going OK for me.

DANI

This is so twisted.

FLYNN

Dani.

KANE

You know, when you started accusing me, I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe that the person I cared about would do that. I honestly thought it’s what you wanted.

DANI

Kane, I said no. How could I mean anything else but no?

FLYNN

Dani, I didn’t let Kane interrupt you. You must show him the same respect.

DANI

It’s so sick.

THE PALACE

NICK, HAYLEY, NOAH, JOSH, SEB, JUDE, SALLY and CHARLOTTE are all in the living room painting. IRENE is in the bathroom. PARIS walks through.

PARIS

There you go.

IRENE

Ah, thanks. Em, I’m not sure that’s exactly the same shade.

PARIS

Ah, it always happens at these things. So many people helping out there’s bound to be a few inconsistencies.

IRENE

That’s right. I forgot you’d done this kind of thing before. What? When you were at Uni or something?

PARIS

No. Just after I got married as a matter of fact.

IRENE

I didn’t realise you were married.

PARIS

I’m not anymore. Wife died.

IRENE

I’m sorry.

PARIS

Sally tells me the same thing happened to you not so long ago.

IRENE

Ken and I weren’t exactly married, but we were about to be.

PARIS

Never really leaves you does it?

IRENE

No.

BRODIE is painting. ALEX is there. ALEX’S phone rings.

BRODIE

Alex. Alex.

ALEX

Ah.

BRODIE

Your phone.

ALEX

Aw, yeah.

ALEX answer it.

ALEX

Brilliant. It’s only my dad.

BRODIE

Alex, can offer you some advice?

ALEX

Would it help if I said no.

BRODIE

Look, I know you really liked Kelli, but let it go.

SEB chases after KIRSTY. KIRSTY runs into the bathroom.

SEB

You can’t stay in there forever.

KIRSTY

IRENE

SEB

NICK

SEB

What are you talking about?

NICK

Seb, I’m not sure Lara would be to impressed to see you carrying on like that with another girl, especially your ex.

SEB

We’re just mucking around.

NICK

I hope Kirsty knows that.

SEB

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

KANE, DANI and FLYNN are in the bedroom.

DANI

So, you’re saying I made this happen because of the way I dress.

KANE

No, I’m saying you walk around like you want guys to come onto you and then you can’t handle it when they do.

DANI

I don’t believe this.

FLYNN

Dani. Kane, another rule. You’re allowed to say how something makes you feel, ie, how she dresses. You are not allowed to pass judgement on her. Got that.

KANE

Yeah.

DANI

So basically I have to dress in a certain way so I don’t have to deal with people like you. That is pathetic Kane and you know it is.

THE PALACE

JUDE and CHARLOTTE are in the kitchen.

JUDE

It’s exactly, huh. Amazing the difference a lick of paint can make.

CHARLOTTE

Definitely. Good idea to get everyone to come round and help.

JUDE

Well, we’ll have to remember that trick won’t we?

CHARLOTTE

What do you mean?

SALLY walk in.

JUDE

Well, we’re going to need a place of our own when the twins are born and as much as I’d like to promise you more, I reckon this as much as we’re going to be able to afford. So, we’ll have to get the troops in and return the favour.

CHARLOTTE

As long as it you, me and the babies, a shoebox will be enough.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

FLYNN, KANE and DANI are in the bedroom.

KANE

You know, it wasn’t just me, my mates thought you had the hots for me as well.

DANI

Well obviously the crawled out of the same gutter as you did.

KANE

Do you know what my life’s been like since the trial? You know, yeah, I got off. Big deal, you know. I had to move schools, change towns and I’ve got no friends and the people that do know me look at me as though I’m dirt.

FLYNN

Guys, this isn’t getting us anywhere.

DANI

This isn’t about what I did Kane. This isn’t about what I did Kane. This is about what you did.

FLYNN

Dani.

DANI

I can’t believe he’s standing there acting like a victim.

KANE

This sucks man. You said it would help.

DANI

You’re letting him say whatever he wants to say.

FLYNN

OK, neither of you are sticking to the rules so just stop and take a few breaths.

DANI

No, I don’t have to listen to this.

DANI walks out.

THE PALACE

IRENE carries a plate. PARIS is up a ladder.

IRENE

Oi, you. If you’re not going to stop, at least grab one of these.

PARIS

What have we got here?

IRENE

Well, we’ve got chocolate mud cake and we’ve got blueberry muffin. If it makes it any easier Leah made the chocolate mud cake which means it will be seriously fabulous and I flung together the blueberry muffins.

PARIS

That’s easy then.

PARIS takes a muffin. KIRSTY is in a bedroom. SEB walks in.

SEB

What do you think you’re doing?

KIRSTY

Hey, don’t do that.

SEB

Saved you a piece.

KIRSTY

Aw, thanks. Can you just help me with the sheets first?

SEB

How cool is this. I can’t believe Noah and Hayley actually did it.

KIRSTY

I know. Other way.

SEB

I wonder if they’ll let me move in when I finish school.

KIRSTY

Don’t be a dork. As if they want to put up with you. Bring your end to me.

SEB

KIRSTY

SEB

KIRSTY

SEB

SEB and KIRSTY kiss.

KIRSTY

I’m so sorry.

SEB

KIRSTY

Maybe we should go downstairs.

SEB

You go first. I’ll wait here.

KIRSTY walks out. JOSH, ALF, NOAH, HAYLEY and JADE are downstairs.

JOSH

All righty.

HAYLEY

Well thanks again. It’s much appreciated.

ALF

No worries love.

KIRSTY walks downstairs.

JADE

Ah, there you are.

KIRSTY

Yeah, em, I want to go home. I want to see how Dani’s going.

JADE

Aren’t you waiting on Seb?

KIRSTY

No, it’s all right. I think Seb got a couple of things to do.

JADE

OK, I’ll go with you.

JADE walks into the kitchen where BRODIE is.

JADE

Brods, Kirsty and I are heading back. We want to see how Dani is.

BRODIE

OK, all right. I’ll grab my bag.

KIRSTY

Yeah, I’ll just wait outside.

KIRSTY walks out. SEB walks down the stairs. NICK walks over to him.

NICK

Hey partner. Noticed you disappeared when the cleaning up started.

SEB

How many people does it take?

NICK

Well, what are you doing now? You want to come over. I might even be able to score you a ride in the frog’s convertible.

SEB

Actually, I’ve got to go.

NICK

Why?

SEB

I’ve got stuff to do, OK.

SALLY walks into the kitchen where IRENE and CHARLOTTE are.

SALLY

Charlotte.

IRENE

Woah.

SALLY

Have you got a sec?

CHARLOTTE

I know you don’t think it’s going to work out with me and Jude, especially after the last couple of months, but I honestly feel as though we’re past that and I really would like you to give us a chance.

SALLY

Jude can move in if that’s what you want. The two of you looked really happy together and I think that he would make a great housemate.

SALLY and CHARLOTTE cuddle.

KANE’S HOUSE

FLYNN and KANE draw up in FLYNN’S van.

FLYNN

Nobody said it was going to be easy mate.

KANE

No, no, but you did tell me it was going to help.

FLYNN

And it will. Today was just the first step.

KANE gets out.

KANE

First means there’s a second. No way.

FLYNN

You know why today didn’t work. Because you and Dani used each other as punching bags. The upside of that is you got a lot out of your system. The next time you might be a bit more prepared to listen to each other. It’s when you do that you start to make more progress man. Just have a think about it. Call me back if you want. OK.

FLYNN drives away.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

FLYNN and DANI are on the veranda.

DANI

You were supposed to look after me today Flynn.

FLYNN

I don’t think you’re being very fair Dan. Neither one of you paid any attention to the rules that I gave you.

DANI

How could I when he was coming up with that stuff?

FLYNN

Today’s sessions was about you dealing with your issues, not reacting to Kane’s.

DANI

Well I was too angry.

FLYNN

And that’s OK. I mean, anger is a very important stage in the healing process.

DANI

I don’t want to go through stages, OK. I want to be over this. Don’t you get that.

FLYNN

There are no quick fixes Dani. What happened today is not going to help you or Kane where you want to be.

SHELLEY, JADE, KIRSTY, BRODIE and RHYS are inside.

SHELLEY

Rhys, either find something useful to do or sit down.

RHYS

He better not be out there trying to talk her into doing it again.

BRODIE

No, he wouldn’t, would he?

SHELLEY

Be fair on Flynn. He didn’t talk her into it in the first place. It was something Dani wanted to try.

JADE

She’ll be all right.

KIRSTY

Aw, yeah.

FLYNN and DANI are outside.

DANI

I don’t get it, OK.

FLYNN

You are looking for solutions in each other instead of yourselves. The healing process. It has to come from within and you are the only person that can achieve that for yourself.

DANI

So what? I’ve just got to skip today.

FLYNN

No, I think today could have been very valuable to you, but you didn’t take advantage of it Dan. I’m afraid it’s that simple.
