Scripts - Episode 3582

THE SURF CLUB

SEB stands by a fence. ALF walks over to him.

ALF

Brought one of your favourite sanners. Chicken and mayo.

SEB

Thanks Uncle Alf, but you shouldn’t have bothered.

ALF

Well, you’ve got to eat mate.

SEB

Sure, but the thing is I’ve just had this huge salad roll from the kiosk. What’s the story with Nick? Is he still at the hospital?

ALF

As far as I know. Flynn reckons they’ve got to do more tests.

SEB

I should go see him.

ALF

Yeah, good idea. Look, just getting back to the salad roll for a minute. Em, I went in there and had a yarn to Rhys? He’d confirm that you bought, will he?

SEB

OK, OK. No salad roll, but I will eat the sandwich.

ALF

Well, go on. Get on with it.

SEB

It looks great.

SEB bites into the roll.

ALF

Just make sure you finish it, ay?

ALF walks away. SEB spits the sandwich up.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

SALLY and LEAH are there.

SALLY

Aw, he was supposed to meet me here for lunch.

LEAH

Aw, you should have married a banker.

SALLY

Yeah, I know, I know. What about you? You all set for America?

LEAH

Oh, we’re still waiting for passports, otherwise we’re all organised. I just need a decent nights sleep.

SALLY

Aw, nerves, hey.

LEAH

Aw, one part of me says don’t go pinning all your hopes on this, but the other. I don’t know. Do you think I’m insane believing in miracles?

SALLY

No, if I was you I’d feel exactly the same if VJ was my son.

ALF walks in.

ALF

Flamin’ teenagers. You know, I don’t know, I’ll never understand them.

LEAH

What? You want to share.

ALF

Well, Seb, I mean most kids his age won’t stop eating.

SALLY

Well, he’s still giving himself a hard time.

ALF

Yeah, look, I know he’s got a broken heart and everything, but it goes further than that. It’s like he can’t let her go.

FLYNN walks in.

SALLY

Hey.

FLYNN

Hey.

SALLY

You’ve spoken to Seb, haven’t you?

FLYNN

Yeah, I’ve tried. Yeah, he’s still not eating.

ALF

No, it’s worse than that mate. He’s lying about it now and that’s just not like Seb.

FLYNN

I’ll try having a word with him Alf, but in the mean time I’ve got to find Nick.

SALLY

Is he still in hospital?

FLYNN

He was. He checked himself out. He’s not even on medication yet.

SALLY

Does Irene know?

IRENE

Yeah, I’ve rang her. She’s beside herself.

SALLY

Yeah, no wonder. I better go round there. Hold her hand for a bit.

SALLY and FLYNN walk out.

ALF

Kids, ay. One flamin’ mess after another.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

An electrician is fixing something on the wall. KANE and NOAH are there.

KANE

So, you’re getting a new phone put in?

NOAH

It’s to accommodate the line for the helpline service. It should be up and running by tomorrow.

KANE

What the hell’s that supposed to be?

NOAH

It’s the roster, believe it or not. You know, everybody wants to help. Just organising the times. It’s messing with my head.

KANE

Well, I can give you a hand if you like. I’m pretty good at sorting messes out.

NOAH

Weren’t you the kid that used to sit up the back of the classroom? Throw paper planes at the teacher’s.

KANE

No. I probably did worse than that.

NOAH

So now you’re a changed man.

KANE

Ah, just trying to fit in. Hoping people will give me a break.

NOAH and KANE walk into the bedroom.

NOAH

It’s not going to be easy. Not with your history.

KANE

Don’t worry. I won’t stuff up.

NOAH

I hope not mate.

NOAH

I hear.

KANE picks up the paper. The headline reads ‘Who is Jane Doe’?

KANE

They reckon this girl’s lost her memory. Do you think she’s putting it on?

NOAH

Well, why would she? You know, she knows there’s plenty of people around here that want to help her.

KANE

Have you met her? She’s a total head case.

NOAH

Where did you run into her?

KANE

In the diner. Didn’t know what was going down, but as soon as she saw me, she just totally lost it.

NOAH

Why would she do that?

KANE

I don’t know. Maybe she thought I was someone she knew.

NICK takes NOAH’S helmet from the office. SEB walks into the bedroom.

SEB

Hey, Noah.

NOAH

Seb. Hey mate.

KANE

Em, I might go make a coffee. Anyone want one?

NOAH

No, I’m all right.

KANE walks out.

NOAH

We can go into my office if you want to talk.

SEB

No, I think I’ll just head out. See you around Noah.

SEB and NICK run out the drop-in centre.

SEB

Nick.

NICK

I can’t hang around mate. I’m sorry.

SEB

What happened with the hospital?

NICK

Look, they’ve shifted auditions today so I’m borrowing Noah’s bike.

SEB

You’re pinching it.

NICK

He won’t mind.

SEB

Are you serious? Nick, he’ll flip out when he finds out. You haven’t even got a license.

NICK

I don’t care. I’m going.

SEB

What happens if you have another blackout?

NICK

Look, I had all the tests and there’s nothing wrong with me.

SEB

So, why don’t you get Irene to drive you?

NICK

Because she’s just going to tell me to stay in bed like a good little boy. Look, Seb, this is my one chance. I’m not going to let it go.

SEB

You shouldn’t be doing this man.

NICK

Then come with me.

SEB

I promised Uncle Alf that I wouldn’t.

NICK

Don’t worry. It’s all going to be OK.

FLYNN and NOAH are inside.

FLYNN

Hi, em, I’ve just being asking the guys at the back. Have any of you guys seen Nick?

NOAH

I thought he was in the hospital.

FLYNN

No, he’s taken off. I think he got a bit freaked out.

An engine can be heard revving.

NOAH

That’s sounds like my bike.

KANE

Have you got your keys on you?

NOAH runs into the office. Then he and FLYNN run outside. SEB and NICK are on the bike.

FLYNN

Hey, hey.

SEB and NICK ride off.

NOAH

I’m going to call the police.

FLYNN

I don’t think that’s a good idea mate.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE and SALLY are there.

IRENE

And then Sal, I knew he was scared, but I didn’t think he would do anything this stupid.

SALLY

Does he know about the epilepsy?

IRENE

Oh no. Oh, god. It’s going to kill him when he finds out.

SALLY

Irene he can still lead a normal life.

IRENE

Can he really? Love, what if he can’t get his license? What if the medication doesn’t work?

SALLY

Look, I don’t much about it, but I do know that it’s a lot better to get it treated.

IRENE

Aw, love. I hope you’re right. I really do.

FLYNN walks in.

IRENE

Did you find him?

FLYNN

Saw him at the centre.

IRENE

Oh, thank god.

FLYNN

He was on Noah’s motorcycle with Seb.

IRENE

What? Did you stop him?

FLYNN

There was nothing I could do.

SALLY

Maybe he just needs a bit of time to sort himself out.

IRENE

Oh my god. The audition.

FLYNN

The city. You think he’s heading to the city.

IRENE

The bike. Flynn. What if he has a seizure on the?

FLYNN

It’s all right. At least we know where he’s heading. Come on.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

LEAH and ALF walk into the kitchen.

ALF

It’s all coming true. I saw Seb die on Noah’s motorbike.

LEAH

Alf, whatever you saw. It doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

ALF

But I came back to stop it happening Leah. What if I fail?

LEAH

None of us know how or when we’re going to die? It’s out of her hands.

ALF

Aw, don’t bring god into this.

LEAH

Alf, Seb is going to be OK. I know it. You just need to have some faith.

ALF

I should have made him understand.

LEAH

Well, you can’t watch him all the time.

ALF

I’d never forgive myself if.

A ROAD

NICK and SEB are on the bike. They take their helmets off. NICK rubs his head.

SEB

What is it?

NICK

My head hurts.

SEB

We should go back.

NICK

No.

They get off the bike.

SEB

What if Noah reports the bike stolen? Nick, you’re already up for car theft. It’s not going to be easy talking your way out of a second sham. You’re not going to have another blackout, are you?

NICK

I don’t know. Seb, what happened to me. It wasn’t a blackout. It was a seizure.

SEB

Like a fit.

NICK

I had to go to the hospital for some more test, but I couldn’t see the point and there’s the audition.

SEB

And you thought you knew better than all the doctors and just walked out.

NICK

Look, I’ll go back after the audition, OK.

SEB

Yeah, but is it so much more important than staying alive.

NICK

Look, I had to know. OK Seb. If they reckon I’m no good I’ll wear it, but I can’t handle not knowing if I could have made it

SEB

OK. You have to get on the back.

NICK

You don’t have to do this.

SEB

Don’t worry about. It’s just some weird dream that Uncle Alf had. It’s not worth worrying about.

SEB and NICK get back on the bike.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE, SALLY, FLYNN, NOAH and ALF are there.

IRENE

Wait a minute. Is that it? Galaxy car thief. Aw, god, I don’t know. I wish I could remember the name of the damm joint.

SALLY

Yeah, well maybe if you stopped trying so hard it might just come to you.

NOAH

Maybe we should just call the police. You know, they can help track him down.

IRENE

Aw, Noah. You’re not going to press charges, are you love?

NOAH

I’m not going to press charges. I just want to find them.

ALF

I’ll call the cop shop.

IRENE

No. Wait. Love, please. Look, Nick’s in enough trouble with the cops as it is.

ALF

This isn’t about saving your boys life. My boys in serious strife.

IRENE

Aw, well look, fine. Ring the damm cops. See if I care.

FLYNN

There’s still a chance they’ll both be fine.

ALF walks outside. IRENE follows him outside.

IRENE

Love, I’m sorry.

ALF

No, it’s not your fault Irene. I did everything possible to stop this happening and it still wasn’t enough. Sometimes I wonder why I bothered coming back.

IRENE

Don’t you ever let me hear you say such a stupid damm thing again. Do you hear me? Seb needs you Alf. We all do.

ALF

I just feel so flamin’ helpless. I mean, if I can’t save Seb what’s the point.

IRENE

I guess we’ll just have top sit tight darl. We wait and hope.

THE CASTING AGENCY

SEB and NICK draw up on the bike. They take their helmets off and get off the bike.

SEB

You’ll be all right.

SEB and NICK walk in. Later they are sitting in the reception.

SEB

Try some deep breathing.

NICK

What?

SEB

So you don’t feel so nervous.

NICK

I am nervous. My head hurts and I feel sick.

SEB

Hey, hey. They asked you to come and audition, remember. Where’s your script?

NICK

I didn’t have it at the hospital, did I?

SEB

You know your stuff all right, though.

NICK

Yeah, I think so. Well I did yesterday.

The CASTING LADY and an AUDITIONEE walk out.

CASTING LADY

Thank you. We’ll call you back soon.

AUDITIONEE

Thank you very much.

SEB

Looks like he just came from a boy band.

CASTING LADY

Nick Smith.

NICK stands up and walks away.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

FLYNN, NOAH and KANE are in the office.

FLYNN

Hey, its all clear in the hospitals and the police have no reports of a motorcycle accident so looks like they got to the city safely.

NOAH

Well, all we have to do now is, you know; stop them getting back on the bike.

FLYNN

Any luck from the casting agents?

KANE

No, no. It’s sun down. I’m just getting answering machines.

NOAH

Well, one of them is got to be open.

KANE

These seizures. Do they affect your memory at all?

FLYNN

Well, the person might not exactly remember the seizure, but they remember what happens before and after, yeah.

KANE

What about amnesia, like if someone hits their head and bang they’ve forgotten everything?

FLYNN

You mean like our Jane Doe?

KANE

Yeah, yeah. I just felt sorry for her, that’s all.

FLYNN

Well, we still don’t know how memory works. Sometimes a shock can start it back.

KANE

But not always.

FLYNN

No, not always.

KANE walks out the office. FLYNN and NOAH look at each other.

THE CASTING AGENCY

NICK and the DIRECTOR are there.

DIRECTOR

Now, Brad wants everyone to think he’s got it together, but inside he feels like a fake.

NICK

I’ve got it.

The DIRECTOR walks over and sits on a change. The CASTING LADY is there.

CASTING LADY

I’ll read Marty. Are you ready? I heard your girlfriend dumped you.

NICK

No way man. I had to let her go. She was getting to my head. She wanted to go over to my place and meet my folks.

CASTING LADY

So?

NICK

So, my old man, he’s an alcoholic and mum’s spaced out on pills all the time. She’s a.

NICK looks at the camera.

CASTING LADY

She’s a mess.

NICK

She’s a mess. How’s a girl like Madison going get all of that?

CASTING LADY

Pretty good story. Still, I heard that she dumped you.

NICK

Yeah, she did. Girlfriends, who needs them? All that angst. A good time, that’s all I’m after.

DIRECTOR

Em, Nick. This is Mr. Heinemann from the A.L.L. What other acting have you done besides the Dorm?

NICK

Just some stuff at school and eh, we’re working on Hamlet at the moment.

DIRECTOR

Well, we like the look. I mean, you could easily be Heath’s younger brother.

NICK

Heath Ledger.

DIRECTOR

Yeah. Didn’t we tell you?

NICK

Eh, no. Look, I can get in Brad’s head so.

DIRECTOR

Listen Nick. We’re on a tight schedule. Do you mind waiting outside?

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALF stands at the counter. SALLY and LEAH are carrying plates.

SALLY

I thought I’d give you a hand.

LEAH walks up to ALF.

LEAH

Why don’t you go and have a break?

ALF

Why doesn’t he at least get in touch with me, ay, to let me know he’s OK? Maybe he can’t.

LEAH

Alf, they could be hundreds of reasons why and I refuse to believe the worst one.

The phone rings. LEAH answers it.

LEAH

Hello. Beachside Diner.

No, no, we haven’t had anything. Not a word.

Yeah, of course we will.

OK. Bye Irene.

LEAH puts the phone down.

ALF

How’s she holding up?

LEAH

She’s just wants to know if we’d heard anything.

ALF

I can’t take much more of this.

SALLY

Mr. Stewart. You know that there’s hasn’t been an accident.

ALF

All we know so far is that no one’s reported one.

ALF’S mobile rings.

ALF

Hello.

Seb, where the hell are you?

But you’re all right.

Thank god for that.

Just stay away from those flamin’ motorbikes.

THE CASTING AGENCY

SEB is on the phone. NICK is there.

SEB

Yeah, OK Uncle Alf. We’ll definitely get the bus back home. I’ve got to. Bye. Thank you.

SEB sits down next to NICK.

SEB

I take it that he wasn’t really that impressed.

NICK

I forgot my lines. I needed a prompt.

SEB

It’s just nerves. It could happen to anyone.

NICK

Or I’m going nuts. You know that other kid will get it. He’s been back in there for ages.

SEB

Who? Boy-band. You’ve got to be kidding me.

The CASTING LADY and the AUDITIONEE walk out.

CASTING LADY

Thank you again.

AUDITIONEE

Thank you very much.

The AUDITIONEE walks away.

CASTING LADY

Nick.

NICK and the CASTING LADY walk into a room where the director is.

DIRECTOR

We love what we see so far Nick. Em, Mr. Heinemann would like to see you do a piece of your own.

NICK

All right. Aw, you mean as in, like a play. I haven’t got anything prepared, but I could do something from Hamlet.

DIRECTOR

Shakespeare. Great choice.

NICK

Well not exactly Shakespeare. Not what he wrote, but what he meant. Say if he was to write it today/

DIRECTOR

Input. Very impressive. Go right ahead.

The DIRECTOR walks away. Later NICK is standing in front of the screen.

NICK

What am I supposed to do?

SEB is sitting outside.

NICK

How am I supposed to be? Do I take what everyone’s throwing at me or do I fight back no matter how big the trouble.

SEB looks into the room.

NICK

Sometimes I feel like I’m drowning or is that just madness.

The DIRECTOR and MR. HEINEMANN are watching.

NICK

Drowning. It’s peaceful. The world can touch. No heartache or a thousand natural shocks. To sleep, for a chance to dream except when you know the dream it becomes a nightmare.

NICK collapses and starts fitting. SEB runs in.

SEB

Nick. It’s OK mate. Call an ambulance.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

KANE takes his bag out from underneath the kitchen sink. NOAH walks in.

NOAH

Good news. My bikes coming home. All in one piece this time.

KANE

Great. No need to kick Nick’s butt then, ay.

NOAH

Nah, not this time around and, eh, no explaining to the insurance company either.

KANE

Aw, it’s always a chance to spin a good story though.

NOAH

Yeah. Fantasy was never my thing though.

KANE

I take it you’re not a good liar.

NOAH

No, I’m completely hopeless so when I tell you that this roster is a work of art you’ll take it as gospel.

KANE

No worries. Anytime you need a hand pick me up.

NOAH walks away. KANE then walks out the kitchen. He walks into a NOSY KID. His bag drops to the floor.

KANE

What the hell do you think you’re doing?

NOSY KID

Sorry.

KANE

Just leave it right. Just leave it.

NOSY KID

Come on, it was just an accident.

KANE

No one ever touches my stuff, OK. Not ever. Got it.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALF and SEB walk down the stairs.

ALF

Have you got any idea what I’ve been through today? I’ve been worried sick about you. I’ve had you wrapped around every flamin’ gum tree between here and the city.

SEB

I’m sorry.

ALF

You’re sorry.

SEB

Yeah. Well, what was I supposed to do Uncle Alf? I had to look after Nick.

ALF

You could have both been killed.

SEB

But we weren’t and it all turned out OK.

ALF

You promised Seb. You know what this means.

SEB

I’m sorry Uncle Alf, but I can live my life worrying about what you saw.

ALF

Well, if you stay away from flamin’ motorbikes you wouldn’t have to.

SEB

I said that I’m sorry and I am, but if I had to make the same choice again, I would.

SEB walks away.

THE BEACH HOUSE

FLYNN, NICK and IRENE are there.

IRENE

Nick, love. Why don’t you climb into bed, ay? You must be exhausted.

FLYNN

Nick, you feeling OK.

NICK

You know what the ambos asked me? Did I have any medication for my epilepsy? So, when were you going to tell me?

FLYNN

Once I’d spoke to the neurologist, but you took off before I had a chance.

NICK

So, it’s true then?

FLYNN

Yes.

NICK

So, I’m going to have fits all the time. Crash out on the floor like a geek all my life.

IRENE

Love, love, we can get this sorted out. Flynn says there’s medication that you can take.

NICK

You can’t fix this for me Irene.

FLYNN

Thousands of people have epilepsy Nick. I mean, many of them are brilliant. Napoleon was epileptic. Michelangelo was epileptic.

NICK

Who cares? Flynn, they’re all dead.

FLYNN

You’re missing the point. You can lead a totally normal life.

NICK

No, you’re missing the point. I get the opportunity of a lifetime and I crash out in a heap on the floor

with no control over my body.

IRENE

Yeah, but, love, love, that’s not going to happen to you if you take this medication.

NICK

Is that true?

FLYNN

In most cases Graymail seizures can be totally controlled.

NICK

In most cases. And what if I’m not most cases? You know, I thought something good was going to happen in my life. I thought I was going to make it happen.

IRENE cuddles NICK.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

SEB and NOAH are in the office.

SEB

I know that I shouldn’t have taken your bike and I’m really sorry about it, but it just happened so fast.

NOAH

Well, what about Alf and Irene? I mean, do you know what you put them through?

SEB and NOAH walk out the office.

SEB

I haven’t been thinking straight. I’ve been screwing everything up. I never meant to get anyone hurt.

NOAH

Have you been able to talk to Kirsty?

SEB

What’s the point? She doesn’t want to be with me.

NOAH

Well, maybe she just needs the time.

SEB

I’ll get over her. No one ever died of having a broken heart anyway. That’s not in the real world.

KANE walks in.

KANE

Hey, em, look I’m not going anywhere so I think we should call a truce. Makes things easier on Kirst.

SEB

Yeah, because her life’s been real fantastic since you came back into this town.

KANE

You need to move on.

NOAH

Maybe we should just talk about this some other time.

SEB

I don’t know what you’re up to, but there is definitely something going on and sooner or later you’re going to slip up and I’ll be there waiting.

KANE walks away.
