SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JADE is there. SEB walks in.

JADE

Seb, what are you doing here?

SEB

Didn’t you hear me calling? I was chasing you down the beach. Are you all right?

JADE

It’s Kirsty. Her and Kane have run off.

SEB

I thought they’d broken up.

JADE

Well they had, but definitely not now.

SEB

Oh man.

JADE

It gets worse. Dad and Beth are on the boat, waiting for me to get back with Kirsty so they can get married.

SEB

Nice wedding present.

JADE

I just don’t know what to do. Everyone’s already down there and Beth’s got this nice dress and everything.

SEB

It’s not your fault that Kirsty’s run off.

JADE

No, but I’m the one who’s stuck with telling everybody.

SEB

No, I’ll come with you. The sooner you get this done, the better.

JADE

Yeah, and the sooner dads wedding day is ruined. Thanks, but I think I better handle this one on my own.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE is there. HAYLEY walks in.

HAYLEY

Hello.

IRENE

Hayley, sweetheart. I heard you were back when rung Leah’s and she said you weren’t there.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I stayed at Noah’s, on the couch.

IRENE

Well, love. As long as you weren’t on the street. Can I get you some brekkie?

HAYLEY

No, no. I’m right thanks. Is Brodie around?

IRENE

Ah, no darl. Actually she stepped out earlier this morning.

HAYLEY

That’s OK, I can wait.

IRENE

Hayley, love. Look. I know it’s none of my beeswax, but don’t you think it would be better, you know, to let things be. What’s happened?

HAYLEY

Do you mind if I watch the telly?

IRENE

If it makes you feel any better. Brodie feels lousy too.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well she looked pretty miserable the other day when I saw her kissing Alex.

IRENE

Love, she would never hurt you deliberately. You know that.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well she did and she needs to know.

THE WHARF

RHYS, BETH, COLLEEN, MARGARET, SCOTT, DANI, HENRY, MAX, ROBBIE and MATILDA are there.

RHYS

What are they doing? Taking the scenic route.

BETH

Aw, Rhys. Come and sit down. I’m sure they won’t be much longer love. Thank you for being so patient Margaret.

MARGARET

It’s fine, but I do have another appointment this afternoon.

JADE walks down the wharf.

RHYS

Ah, they you are. Where have you been?

BETH

Is everything all right?

JADE

Ah, no, not really. Kirsty is sick. She had to go back to bed.

RHYS

Did you tell her we were getting married?

JADE

I thought it was supposed to be a surprise.

BETH

It’s all right love.

JADE climbs aboard.

ROBBIE

It’s Kane, isn’t it?

JADE

How did you know?

ROBBIE

I saw them at Irene’s. They’re back together.

JADE

Why didn’t you say something?

ROBBIE

How was I supposed to know it was such a big deal?

JADE

Because it is, which is why I can’t say anything to dad and Beth. This days meant to be special for them, got it.

ROBBIE

OK, I’ve got it.

RHYS

She specifically knows that we wanted here today, but, no, Kirsty just, as usual, puts herself first.

BETH

Maybe we should cancel. Margaret can’t wait all day.

RHYS

No, stuff it. Eight out of nine kids is enough. I’ll deal with Kirsty later. Hey Alf.

ALF

Yeah, mate.

RHYS

Let’s get going.

ALF

All right. Let her rip Scott.

RHYS

I’ve waited long enough.

KANE AND KIRSTY’S WEDDING

KANE AND KIRSTY’S WEDDING

KIRSTY and KANE walk away.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS carries BETH in.

RHYS

Welcome home.

BETH

You’re going to do your back in.

RHYS

Not if it kills me first.

HENRY walks in.

HENRY

Ah, gross.

COLLEEN, KIT and DANI walk in.

COLLEEN

Well I think it’s very romantic.

BETH

Aw, thank you Colleen.

COLLEEN

Especially at your age.

RHYS

Right. Look, there’s lots of food and drink left. Get stuck in.

KIT

Who needs a special occasion?

RHYS

Hey, Kirsty. Kirsty. Jade, will you go upstairs and get your sister. Drag her down if you have to. What?

JADE

Kirsty won’t be coming down.

RHYS

What are you talking about?

JADE hands RHYS the letter.

MATILDA

What does it say?

HENRY

Will someone tell me what’s going on?

RHYS hands the letter to DANI.

DANI

By the time you read this I will be Kane’s wife. It’s not how I wanted, but you left me no choice. I’ll come back. I want to. I love you all so much, but not now. Kane is my husband. Please don’t hate me.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE and HAYLEY are there. BRODIE walks in.

BRODIE

Irene, I just spoke to Alex and Hayley’s back.

IRENE

Ah, yeah love. I reckon I already know that.

HAYLEY

Hello stranger.

IRENE

Girls, listen. How’s about I put on the kettle and we sit down and talk about this very calmly.

HAYLEY

Irene.

IRENE

All right. Well I’ll be upstairs if you need me. Go easy.

IRENE walks upstairs.

BRODIE

Hayley, I’m sorry, OK. I feel really awful.

HAYLEY

You should have thought of that before you kissed my boyfriend. I spent the last few days going over and over all of this trying to work out how one of my closest friends could do this to me.

BRODIE

Hayley, please.

HAYLEY

You know, I was so happy to see you last week. Hanging around with Dan, mucking around like we used to.

BRODIE

Yeah, I really missed you guys too?

HAYLEY

So what happened?

BRODIE

It’s just really complicated Hayley.

HAYLEY

No, it’s actually very simple Brodie. Friends do don’t do that to each other, ever.

BRODIE

I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well you didn’t try hard enough to stop it, did you? I hope you and Alex have a nice life together. You deserve each other.

HAYLEY walks out.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS and BETH sit on the bed.

RHYS

How’s Dan?

BETH

Well, she’s a bit shaken. Ah, but after everything she’s gone she’s a lot tougher than we think now.

RHYS

Not the wedding day we planned, is it?

BETH

No. Ah, but we got.

KANE AND KIRSTY’S HOUSE

KANE and KIRSTY get out KANE’S car.

KIRSTY

Do you think we’re far enough from Summer Bay?

KANE

Yeah, three hours. I reckon so. What do you think?

KIRSTY

I think it’s cute.

KANE

Well, it’s not Buckingham Palace, but it’s ours. You know, I’ve paid the bond and two weeks rent.

KIRSTY

I love it. It’s got character.

KANE

The owner said we could do some renovating. You know, a bit of paint. Some decking out back for a barbie.

KIRSTY

Sounds good, all right.

KANE

And the high school’s just down the road, so you can sleep in every moment if you want.

KIRSTY

OK. Should we go in or?

KANE

Yep. Wait. I want to do something first.

KIRSTY

What are you doing?

KANE lifts KIRSTY.

KANE

It’s tradition. Come on Mrs Phillips.

KIRSTY

Put me down.

KANE

No. I want to make you so happy Kirst and I can’t put a smile on your dial by next week, I’ll bring you back, OK. I promise.

KIRSTY

Promise.

KANE carries KIRSTY into the house.

THE BEACH HOUSE

KIT and IRENE are there.

KIT

I’ll probably just stay on one of the dorms on campus till I sort, at least until I sort things out.

IRENE

Aw, gee, love. I don’t know about that. You know, I’ve heard stories about those joints. Boys, parties and booze.

KIT

Hopefully I’ll be too busy with my head in a textbook to even notice.

IRENE

Yeah, well if you should, you know, forget the books for one night or so, you make sure you ring me. I’ll pull you into line.

IRENE walks into the kitchen.

KIT

Yeah. Irene.

IRENE

Come on love. You told me you weren’t going to all mushy on me.

KIT

Yeah, but if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be going to Uni. I wouldn’t have a family or a future.

IRENE

That’s not true love. You know that. You’re the one that’s put in the hard yards. I just pointed you in the right direction. We’ll miss you sweetie. Me too.

IRENE and KIT cuddle.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS sits on the bed. KIT walks in.

KIT

Hey, I just wanted to say that I’m sorry about.

RHYS

Ah, I bet you’re glad to be escaping all of this.

KIT

I wouldn’t say that. I’m going to miss everyone so much.

RHYS

Well, we’re going to miss you too.

KIT

I might not get another chance to talk to you alone so I just wanted to say thank you for everything that you’ve done for me and I am glad that mum found you. I know that you’re going to make her very happy.

RHYS

Aw, you can be certain of that kid and look, I just want you to know that this your home now, always. Right.

KIT and RHYS cuddle. BETH walks in.

BETH

Sorry.

KIT

It’s all right. We were just having a huggie.

KIT and BETH walk out.

KIT

Bad time to be abandoning ship, hey.

BETH

You’re not abandoning ship.

KIT

So much going on. I think I should have applied somewhere closer to home.

BETH

Kit, stop. This is your time now. It’s time to put yourself first.

KIT

You said always did that anyway.

BETH

You should have stood up to Jack a long time ago.

KIT

What?

BETH

Why do you think your father sent all of the other kids off to boarding school, but kept you on the farm?

KIT

Because I could do an impersonation of him.

BETH

You were his favourite. I mean, he loved the other kids too, but he loved you so much he couldn’t bear to see you further than the back paddock. You have got to go to Uni love. This is your chance to make something of yourself and I have no doubt that you will do exactly that.

KIT

We shouldn’t do this yet. Plenty of time for blubbering.

KIT walks downstairs. RHYS and BETH stand in front of ROBBIE, KIT, SCOTT, MAX, DANI, JADE, MATILDA and HENRY who are sitting at the table.

RHYS

Now I wanted it to be a special day. A happy day that we spent together as a family, celebrating our marriage. Now I know that not all of you were a hundred percent sold on the idea, but I just want to say that I really appreciate that in the end all of you made an effort. All of you except one and if that person has chosen to remove herself from this family then that is her decision and she is not going to ruin another minute this day.

JADE

Dad, Kirsty didn’t mean it. She didn’t even know.

RHYS

From now on, your sisters name is not to be mentioned in this house.

DANI

You can’t pretend Kirsty doesn’t exist.

RHYS

Ever and that’s that.

RHYS walks out. RHYS and BETH are in their bedroom.

RHYS

Can’t have a wedding night without fresh sheets.

BETH

It’s not going to work Rhys.

RHYS

We want a nice clean start to this marriage, yeah.

BETH

Dani’s right. You can’t just chuck Kirsty out like that.

RHYS

I can do my best.

BETH

Do you remember what you said to me the other night?

RHYS

Well, remind me, because you’re going to tell me anyway.

BETH

You said that you wished that Kirsty could have the happiness that you found with me.

RHYS

That scumbag is never going to make her happy.

BETH

You’re wrong love. He already does.

RHYS

She could have been anything she wanted. Anything, and now look at her. She is a runaway teenage bride. She’s cut off from her family. She can’t even pick up the phone and say hi.

BETH

Maybe. Maybe not. That’s up to you, isn’t it?

THE SURF CLUB

HAYLEY is in her car. She is about to drive away when BRODIE jumps in front of her.

BRODIE

Hayley, Hayley wait. Hayley.

HAYLEY

What the hell is wrong with you? I could have killed you.

BRODIE

We need to talk.

HAYLEY

Forget it.

BRODIE gets out the car.

HAYLEY

What are you doing? Get out.

BRODIE

No, not this time Hayley. It’s my turn to talk.

HAYLEY

Whatever.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

ROBBIE, JADE, MAX, KIT, HENRY and MATILDA are there.

MATILDA

Aw, just shut up, all right.

MAX

You shut up. You guys don’t know anything.

HENRY

It explains why other people in this house are so weird.

MATILDA

Yeah, it must run in the family.

JADE

Look, you have no idea what this family has been through so just keep your opinions to yourself.

HENRY

It was just a joke.

SCOTT and DANI walk in.

SCOTT

Yeah, well it wasn’t a very funny one. Keep it down. We can hear you outside.

MATILDA

It’s unfair. Why do you always stick up for them?

ROBBIE

Maybe because they don’t carry on like brats.

HENRY

Aw, who asked you geek face?

BETH walks in.

BETH

Aw, come on guys.

HENRY

It’s not our fault Kirsty’s done a runner with her evil boyfriend, I mean husband and Uncle Rhys has totally gone off the deep end.

MAX

You’re dead Hunter.

BETH

This stops now. I will not have you speak about your stepfather or your stepsister like that. Do you understand me? Rhys is unbearable pain up there and I’d appreciate if you could at least show him some sympathy or some respect. Don’t make me more ashamed of you than I already am. I also lost a daughter today and you, all of you, have lost a sister. Can we please, just try, and behave like a family because like it or not that’s exactly what you are.

BETH walks out.

A ROAD

BRODIE and HAYLEY are in HAYLEY’S car.

BRODIE

I knew the kiss was wrong Hayley, OK, and I know I should have been on the first bus out of town.

HAYLEY

Yeah. Then, why weren’t you?

BRODIE

Because I had to make a choice OK, between my happiness and yours.

HAYLEY

Gee, Brodie that make me feel a whole lot better.

BRODIE

It’s selfish, I know, OK, but I know that if I was in your position then I’d feel exactly the same way that you do.

HAYLEY

There’s bus stop up ahead. If you’re finished I’ll drop you there.

BRODIE

Alex and I love each other Hayley.

HAYLEY

This is so not helping.

BRODIE

Look, I would have never ever have jeopardised our friendship if I didn’t truly believe that Alex and I were meant to be together.

HAYLEY

I understand why you did it Brodie, but it doesn’t make it OK and nothing you can say is going to.

BRODIE

Watch out Hayley, watch out.

HAYLEY swerves to avoid a car. The car hits a tree.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE is there. DANI walks in.

IRENE

Careful love, the floor’s a little bit slippery.

DANI

What a way to spend you’re afternoon, eh?

IRENE

Yeah, well you know, something’s just can’t be avoided. I guess it must be a bit of a madhouse at your joint at the moment.

DANI

And the rest of it.

IRENE

Yeah, well, nothing like a wedding or two to throw things into a spin.

DANI

You know, you could see dad and Beth and you could see it coming, but Kirsty and Kane. I just don’t understand.

IRENE

Yeah, right.

DANI

You don’t sound so surprised.

IRENE

Ah, well, actually love, I kind of guessed it was on the cards. You know, from something Flynn said.

DANI

And no one wanted to tell us.

IRENE

Dani, love, you know, if they’ve got their hearts set on it, you really think either of us are going to talk them out of it.

DANI

You’re right. I don’t know Irene. Everything’s just a mess at the moment.

IRENE

Yeah, love. Well, bit of it going around love.

DANI

How’s Hayley and Brodie?

IRENE

Oh, I wouldn’t have a clue. I haven’t spoken to either of them for hours.

DANI

I’ll give Hayley a call. See if she’s OK.

IRENE

Truly love, I wouldn’t bother. They’ve either kissed and made up or they’ve killed each other.

DANI

Says you who’s distracting herself doing housework. You don’t feel worried.

IRENE

Aw, right then. Go on. Put me out of my misery.

DANI dials her phone.

A ROAD

A mobile phone rings. HAYLEY’S car has crashed in to a tree. BRODIE is lying through the windscreen. HAYLEY is still in the car.
