Scripts - Episode 3677

THE WHARF

KANE and SCOTT come in on the Blaxland.

KANE

Good day, eh. Didn’t think those fish were going to stop biting.

SCOTT

Yeah, it was a good day. It was long though.

SCOTT and KANE unload the boat.

SCOTT

Do you want a hand with that?

KANE

No, I’m alright. Is there anything you want me to do before I scrub the decks?

SCOTT

Have you cleaned the fish box?

KANE

Yes, and been through the engine room.

SCOTT

No, that’s everything.

SCOTT walks away.

KANE

Cool, I’ll get onto the decks.

KANE slips and cuts his hand.

KANE

Ahl.

THE HOSPITAL

HAYLEY lies in hospital. FLYNN walks in.

FLYNN

Are you up to sharing a chocolate bar? It’s not the most complete nutritional meal, but it will keep your energy levels up. Do you remember when Sally was sick? When she had the fall in the drop-in centre and then she had the tumour?

HAYLEY

Yeah, I was in year twelve.

FLYNN

That’s right and you know, Sally felt exactly the same way that you do now, back then. She didn’t want to see me. She wanted to locked herself away. She couldn’t see the point in going on, but now, after all we’ve been through, she’s going to have a baby and now we’ve everything to live for and you will too, Hayley.

HAYLEY

A baby. No, I didn’t know.

FLYNN

Yes, you did. What’s the last thing you remember doing?

HAYLEY

Painting faces, Noah. No, that must be wrong. It’s lost.

FLYNN

OK, we don’t have to talk about it now, but it’s not lost, it’s just missing in action. We will find it Hayley. We will.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BETH is on the phone.

BETH

Bye.

RHYS walks in. BETH puts the phone down.

RHYS

Who was that?

BETH

Mr. Rogers, the president of the P and C, which I have just agreed to join.

RHYS

You know, once they get you on one of those committees you’re a slave for life.

They walk through to the hall.

BETH

Well, if we want a say in what happens at the school, I will happily become a slave, especially under this new principal. I mean, I managed to change his mind about the fight, but goodness knows what he’s got in store.

RHYS

Are you sure stopping it was the right thing?

BETH

Rhys!

RHYS

I mean, I know how you felt. I’m just worried this Hyde fellow, you know, is going to be even harder on them now.

BETH

Well, anything’s better than one of them being beaten to a pulp.

RHYS

It would have never have got to that. Seriously, they would have been covered in all of this protective gear.

BETH

Aw, yeah, and that makes me feel better.

RHYS

Sweetheart, men have been beating each others heads in for centuries, right, and me and my brother Pete, we used to smack the living daylights out of each other. Half an hour later we’d be out the back kicking a footy around.

BETH

Well, that doesn’t matter now because it’s not happening.

BETH walks up the stairs.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

HENRY and MAX walk along outside.

HENRY

I can’t believe mum went and talked to Jekyll.

MAX

Why? I’m glad it was called off. She must have really let him have it.

HENRY

You’re just glad because you knew I’d win.

MAX

Who cares about winning? Imagine how bad it would have looked in front of the whole school.

HYDE walks over to them.

HYDE

And where do you think you two are going?

MAX

We’re going home.

HYDE

Not before your boxing match, you’re not.

MAX

But I thought.

HYDE

I don’t care very much what you thought Mr. Sutherland. Back to the hall.

MAX, JADE, SEB, HYDE and HENRY are in the hall.

MAX

Maybe Colleen was right, you know. Maybe I should quit.

SEB

Are you serious, man? He’s just trying to psyche you out, eh.

MAX

And it’s working.

TASHA and ROBBIE stand together.

TASHA

Hey, why do they wear those funny hats?

ROBBIE

So it doesn’t hurt when the other person punches them.

HYDE

Mr. Sutherland, Mr. Hunter. Corners please.

JADE

I can’t believe he’s doing this. Beth said he’d called it off.

SEB

Now, are you ready? Have you got everything?

MAX

Yeah, I’ve got my helmet, my mouth guard, my chest guard.

SEB

What about your?

SEB whistles.

MAX

My groin guard. Em, Sir, I’ll be back in tick.

MAX runs off.

HENRY

Isn’t that a walkover, Sir.

HYDE

He’s got five minutes.

THE WHARF

SCOTT and KANE work in the Blaxland.

KANE

Ah.

SCOTT

How are you doing?

KANE

Yeah, nearly done.

SCOTT

What have you done to yourself?

KANE

Aw, it’s nothing. Just hands are a bit soft. Not done this kind of work for a while.

SCOTT

If you’ve hurt yourself, you need to tell me, you know. Give us a look.

KANE

It’s OK. It’s my own stupid fault. I should have been looking at what I was doing.

KANE shows SCOTT his cut.

SCOTT

Why didn’t you say something?

KANE

It’s fine. I’ve handled worse than this before.

SCOTT

Look, you can knock off. I don’t need you for the rest of the day anyway.

KANE

But I’ll be finished in ten minutes.

SCOTT

Look, I can’t have you working in that condition.

KANE

And I don’t want to give you anything to complain about.

SCOTT

Look, I know you’ve got a point to prove, but this isn’t the way to do it, alright. I’m the boss and I’m telling you to stop it and if we’re going to work together, you’re going to have to learn to take orders, OK.

KANE

Yeah, see you tomorrow.

KANE gets off the boat.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS and BETH are there. JADE walks in.

JADE

Hey.

RHYS

Hey.

BETH

Aw, I thought the whole gang would have been home by now.

JADE

They’re all still at school. Jekyll’s making Max and Henry go through with the fight.

BETH

What?

RHYS

I thought you made yourself absolutely clear to him.

BETH

Evidently not clear enough. I’ve got to get down there.

RHYS

Yeah, em, I’ll come too.

BETH and RHYS walk out the house.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

IRENE and SALLY are in IRENE’S office.

IRENE

Yeah, I was hoping to get away and see Hayley. Noah said she’s having a pretty rough time of it today.

SALLY

Yeah, well, she’s going to have bad days.

IRENE

Yeah, well, love they are the days I’m going to have to be there for her, but Hyde won’t give an inch. The man hasn’t got a heart, let alone any understanding of human nature. I mean, fair dinkum, how somebody like that can end up headmaster is just beyond me and to come in over your head like that, I mean, this must be harder on you than anyone.

SALLY

Yeah, well, there’s not much I can do about it. As vice principal it is my duty to support him.

IRENE

What? Even if it kills you.

SALLY

Or he kills the kids first. Honestly, Irene, this ridiculous boxing match. He knows it’s against department guidelines. He just doesn’t care. I better get down to the gym. See what’s happening. Make sure things don’t get too out of control.

IRENE

Yeah, well I’ll come with darl. Get him to sign this. Maybe I can get out of this flippin’ joint.

IRENE and SALLY walk out the office. TASHA, ROBBIE, SEB, MAX, HYDE and HENRY are in the gym.

HYDE

Alright you two, are you ready?

MAX and HENRY start boxing. They dance around, not hitting each other. IRENE and SALLY walk in.

HYDE

Alright, stop this nonsense. The idea of a boxing match is too connect with your opponent. That is the way that you score. At the moment, both of you are on zero. Now when I ask you to box again, do it properly. Now box.

MAX and HENRY start boxing, but end up hugging each other.

HYDE

Break it up.

MAX and HENRY continue to box. BETH and RHYS walk in.

BETH

Stop this right now.

HENRY punches MAX knocking him out.

TASHA

Max!

BETH

Max!

Everyone crowds around MAX.

BETH

This is a disgrace. You said this would not go ahead.

HYDE

Then you misunderstood me Mrs Sutherland. I said nothing of the sort.

BETH

Maxi, Maxi.

SEB

Should we call an ambulance?

RHYS

Hey, careful matey.

MAX wakes up.

MAX

Did I win?

THE HOSPITAL

HAYLEY sits on a chair. IRENE walks in.

IRENE

Hiya sweetheart. I bought you these to cheer you up love. Huh, now what’s this I hear about you giving Flynn a hard time, eh? Love, he only wants you to get better. We all do. Can I get you a drink? I don’t know what all this carry on is about, you know. You are a very beautiful person and you’re going to get through this Hayley.

HAYLEY

What if I don’t want to?

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS and MAX are in the living room. MAX holds an icepack to his head. JADE and BETH are in the kitchen.

RHYS

Hey mate, how’s your head?

MAX

It’s still there.

RHYS

You know, maybe we should take you to see Flynn, just in case.

MAX

I’m OK, Uncle Rhys, honest. You know, if I start feeling dizzy or anything, I will tell you.

RHYS walks into the kitchen.

BETH

For someone who didn’t have a problem with boxing, you’re very concerned.

RHYS

Copping a couple of hits is very different to getting knocked out cold. Hyde should never have let it get that far.

BETH

Well, if you have an issue with it, you can always come along to the P and C meeting.

RHYS walks out. HENRY walks in and sits down next to MAX.

HENRY

Your face is a bit of a mess.

MAX

You told me to get used to your fist.

HENRY

I was just trying to scare you. I didn’t mean to knock you out.

MAX

Hey, it was a good punch.

HENRY

It was the only one I could land with you bouncing around like a kangaroo. Besides, you were on your feet longer than I thought.

MAX

I was on my feet longer than I thought too.

RHYS walks back in.

BETH

Why did we have to suffer a black eye. I don’t understand.

RHYS

Yeah, well, look. Let’s just be happy that some good has came out of it, OK.

JADE

I think it should be banned. It’s the first thing that I would do if I was school captain, not that I’m going to be.

RHYS

Aw, Jade, I don’t see why you still don’t run. Now, look, you have been wanting to do this since year ten. Seb will cope.

JADE

Yeah, I know, but remember what it was like with Nick and The Dorm. I just don’t want Seb to think that I’ve moved in and taken something he wants.

BETH

I hope some of this maturity rubs off on Matilda when you’re sharing a room.

JADE

What? I can’t share a room with Matilda. I’ve been waiting years for my own room.

BETH

Well, if I had my way, you’d all have your own rooms, but you girls have one to yourself while the boys are squeezed in together.

JADE

That’s not my fault.

RHYS

Alright, look, why don’t we just wait for a moment because Dani’s only just moved out and you never know, we could have Kirsty back before long, with the baby.

THE PALACE

DANI looks at a photo of SHELLEY, RHYS, KIRSTY, JADE and herself. SCOTT walks in.

SCOTT

Hey honey, I’m home.

DANI

If you say that again, I’m going to wear a frilly apron, I swear.

SCOTT

Well, I prefer you like this.

They kiss.

SCOTT

How did the big move go?

DANI

Moving is such fun. Jade gave me a hand and we made some adjustments to your room. Our room, sorry.

DANI and SCOTT sit down on the couch.

DANI

So, how did you go on the boat?

SCOTT

Aw, well, it was interesting. Kane worked his guts out trying to impress me, but apart from that, not bad. It’s good to be home.

DANI

So, have you thought about what you want for dinner?

SCOTT

Well I thought that was your department. Haven’t you cooked it yet.

DANI

Give me the remote control. Thank you.

DANI switches the TV off.

SCOTT

My only pleasure in life.

DANI

Promise us we’re not going to turn into a middle aged couple.

SCOTT

Well, we’ve got a few days before that, haven’t we?

DANI

It happens though. Like, people get routines and then they.

SCOTT

Lose sight of who they are and what brought them together and.

DANI

Yes.

SCOTT

Well it’s not going to happen to us.

DANI

Well, how do you know that.

SCOTT

Because I jut promised you and I know what a scary woman you are when you are being crossed.

DANI

I am being serious. We have our own lives, you know and you might want to go out with the boys one night. I might want to study.

SCOTT

Look, as long as I wake up to you each morning, I’m really happy. So, what’s really for dinner?

DANI

Aw, you’re going to die.

SCOTT

Aw, don’t tickle me. Don’t!

DANI

Don’t you say that again.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS stands at the barbecue. BETH walks out carrying the meat.

RHYS

Hey, the butcher must love us. We’re going to make him a very rich man.

BETH

Mmm, and you were thinking of feeding two more by what you were saying earlier.

RHYS

I’m only being realistic. Look, this Kane Kirsty thing has only been doomed from the start and now there’s a baby as well, I just want her to know that this is still her home.

JADE walks into the kitchen.

BETH

I know you’re concerned, but you don’t want to wish that on Kirsty. I mean, surely you want her to be happy.

RHYS

Yeah, of course I do. I just want her to know that I’m here for her too.

BETH

She knows. You tell her every time you see her love. I mean, if she needs you, she’ll come to you, but we’ve got five other children living under this roof that we have to think about and we can’t keep Kirsty’s room empty, waiting for something to go wrong. We need to concentrate on today. Tomorrow’s going to look after itself.

BETH walks inside.

JADE

You’re wrong, you know.

BETH

Sorry.

JADE

Tomorrow will just be more problems. Trust me.

JADE walks away.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

MAX is surrounded by a group of girls, including CAITLIN.

MAX

I tried my hardest and I nearly had him there for a while.

CAITLIN

That’s OK Max. We’re just glad you’re alright.

CAITLIN kisses MAX. They walk away, past HENRY.

CAITLIN

Big bully.

HENRY runs down the stairs to MAX.

HENRY

How does that work out?

MAX

Simple, the big guy wins; the small guy, the underdog, all the chicks feel sorry for him. As for the cash, well they all thought I had this plan to beat you, otherwise, why would I be dumb enough to take you on. Weren’t they all wrong.

HENRY

Well at least I know I won fair and square.

MAX

If that’s what you want to think.

MAX walks away. HENRY runs after him.

THE BLAXLAND

SCOTT and KANE are on the boat.

KANE

Listen, sorry I was late this morning. Kirsty was pretty crook. Morning sickness. I’ll make it up to you, I swear.

SCOTT

Yeah, well, a phone call would be good next time, OK.

KANE

Yeah, yeah, cheers.

SCOTT

How’s your hand?

KANE

Yeah, yeah, good. Listen, I was thinking about these rods. They’re giving us a bit of trouble, you know. I was thinking that maybe we could stick up another ceiling rack and store them here on the boat rather than taking them up to the ute every day.

SCOTT

Yeah, I’ll make them up. Good idea.

KANE

Do you want a coffee or something?

SCOTT

Do you want to make it a bit stronger this time!

KANE

Yeah, no worries.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

SALLY and KIM walk along.

KIM

Look, I don’t want a big deal of me being here.

SALLY

I understand. Well, that’s about the tour, really. I’ve got a few things to do, so.

KIM

Yeah, thanks I’ll be fine.

SALLY

Welcome to Summer Bay High.

KIM

Yeah, thanks.

SALLY walks away. KIM walks over to ROBBIE and TASHA.

ROBBIE

New in town, eh.

KIM

Yeah.

TASHA

Are you a teacher?

KIM

Very last thing I’d ever be is a teacher.

ROBBIE

Yeah, well, what’s the score. We’re in Year Ten, but you must be in.

KIM

Yeah, the same.

TASHA

You’re in our grade.

KIM

Yeah, looks that way. So, what’s the score around here?

SEB and JADE walk over.

ROBBIE

I couldn’t tell you. We’re basically new too, but our resident Summer Bay-ologists may be able to warn you about the dangers that lurk in these parts.

SEB

Hi, I’m Seb.

JADE

The only danger around here is Jekyll.

ROBBIE

The principal from hell. His name’s Hyde, but we call him Jekyll because he’s a complete nightmare.

HYDE walks behind ROBBIE.

ROBBIE

Except we got the characters mixed up.

SEB

A monster by any other name. He’s totally arrogant. He treats us like we’re soldiers. He’s got a daughter too, Kim, but she hasn’t arrived yet. I hope she’s not obnoxious as he is.

HYDE

Interesting comment Mr. Miller, from someone running for school captain. I see you haven’t told them who you are Kim. Why shouldn’t I be surprised? Can I speak with you in my office please.

HYDE walks away.

ROBBIE

Hey, listen, if you want, we can show you around later.

KIM

Aw, thanks mate.

ROBBIE

It’s no trouble.

KIM

Yeah, sure. That would be good.

ROBBIE

Robbie, Robbie Hunter.

KIM walks away.

ROBBIE

So that’s Jekyll’s daughter, hey.

ROBBIE and TASHA walk away. KIM and HYDE are in HYDE’S office.

HYDE

Where have you been?

KIM

Around.

HYDE

You could at least had the courtesy to let me know that you’re OK.

KIM

Yeah, like you really care.

HYDE

I will not allow what happened at the last school to happen here.

KIM

So, what are you going to do? Make me repeat a year again. The kids here already think you’re a Nazi. How’s that any different to our last school.

HYDE

Don’t push me Kim

KIM

Then don’t push me dad. If you do, then I’m going to kiss you back.

IRENE sits at her computer. KIM walks out HYDE’S office.

HYDE

Kim!

IRENE

Kids, eh.

HYDE

I suggest you spend more time on your work and less time listening to other peoples conversations and if I hear of anything around the school about this, I’ll know exactly where it came from.

HYDE walks back into his office and slams the door.

THE HOSPITAL

HAYLEY is lying in bed. FLYNN walks in.

FLYNN

This cant go on Hayley. You need to eat. I’m not prepared for the nurses to get in a wrestling fight every time they feed you. This has got to stop. Are you with me on this?

HAYLEY

Nope, you’re on your own.

FLYNN

OK, well I will have you force fed. I’m prepared to do that. I’m not prepared for you to have this agenda. There’s too many people out there committed to having you back. Don’t do this to them. Don’t do it to yourself.

FLYNN starts eating the food.

FLYNN

Mmm, I’ve always believed that hospital food gets a particularly bad rap, but this jelly is particularly good. It’s got the right kind of wobble.

HAYLEY

I’m so scared Flynn.

FLYNN

I know.

HAYLEY

What if I can’t ever remember?

FLYNN

That’s a memory book. I’ve already put in a few entries. I want you to put down anything that comes into your mind and we’ll make sure we fill in all these blank spaces, but, before you write, we must have the strength to pick up the pen, so that means you must have something to eat. Are you with me on this?

HAYLEY

I’ll try.

FLYNN feeds HAYLEY the jelly.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

IRENE sits at her computer. HYDE walks out his office.

HYDE

See that this ad goes into the employment section of the Saturday paper, thank you.

HYDE hands IRENE a note.

IRENE

Office manager. That sounds like my job.

HYDE

How very observant of you!
