Goodbye Flynn: A Letter to Seven

The storyline covering Flynn's cancer has had a profound effect on a number of people who have lost loved ones to Cancer themselves. Jack Wilkins was one of those people, and felt he had to write to Channel Seven to commend both the Actors and the Producers on such a realistic account of how Cancer takes it toll on people. Here is his letter, and the reply he received from Channel Seven.

Dear Home and Away,

I very very much hope you don't mind me mailing about the above and giving a brief background as to why..(I'm writing from the UK)

On the 22nd May just gone, a year ago to that day,my Dad (who incidentally was a GP) lost an extremely long and selflessly brave battle with cancer.

So, watching Home and Away at the moment, both my mum and I, being very very long time fans, are feeling very very effected by what I can only describe as being so meticulously beautifully written, filmed and above all acted, journey that these two(of course not forgetting Ric, Cassie and Pippa), are currently undergoing.

We both find ourselves, and merely at this stage, shedding a tear and remarking between the two us, how so very close to our bones this all is. Which leads me, I guess, to say how truly, totally and completely compelling, heart-wrenching and at times just too painfully real, Kate Ritchie(who let's face it not only can act but cry like very, very, very few actors can) and Joel McIllroys performances and portrayals of the two characters are.

It's little wonder that Kate at this years Logies (she was robbed of Gold!), said she is so emotionally attached to the show - and Joel, well frankly an injustice he didn't win!

I know the end of this long, painful and I have to say beautiful journey for them both is nearly over, I've been very, very lucky enough to see the last episodes already - I've had a friend send me them. Not only did they make me think back, but I have to say, they've helped me grieve. That might sound a bit strong I guess, but coupled with the time of year, I've managed to find the fact that this has caused me to do that a very welcome relief and marking point for me.

How myself and my Mum will manage with them when they air over here in the UK, I'm not sure!!

But, I just had to write this mail as it feels vital to do so, and say a deeply heartfelt thankyou to Kate Ritchie, Joel McIllroy and H&A as a total whole. I really, really hope you don't mind me doing this!

My sincere thanks again to you for being kind enough to take the time to have a read of this!!

Jack Wilkins

Hi Jack

Thank you for your email and we are all very sorry to hear about your loss.

Kate, Joel and in fact the whole cast and crew found shooting those scenes very emotional.

I have attached a link which contains a feature about families and Flynn's last words to his family, I hope you find it comforting. https://seven.com.au/homeandaway/feat_general_060220_families

Take care and stay strong for your Mum. I feel particularly close to our English fans as I am from the UK myself, so I get a little homesick from time to time.

Kindest regards
Tania Seager
