Phoebe and Kyle are worried about Ricky. Zac proposes to Leah.
Extended Summary
‘Welcome to Summer Bay’.
A week has passed and under John’s instruction, a sign reading this is hoisted up, ready for the carnival. When John checks in with Alf, the feelings of the Braxton family are brought to his attention. John justifies that Brax loved the surf, and when Phoebe arrives, she buoys them – the carnival should go ahead. But over at the Share House, it’s a different vibe. Ricky’s worried that keeping Angelo’s closed isn’t good for the business, but Kyle thinks they have bigger things to address. He tells her he wants to have a memorial for Brax, but she doesn’t think it’s a good idea.
When Phoebe returns, she’s filled in on Ricky’s rejection of the memorial idea. She doesn’t understand it, but Ash tells her and Kyle it’s her way of dealing with his death. Phoebe pops in to see Ricky to discuss the idea. She explains she needs to put the drama of Brax behind her, look after baby Casey, and be left alone to do so. The memorial can’t allow her to do this. When Phoebe heads back to meet Ash, she explains that Ricky needs help. However, it’s clear that Ricky isn’t the only one battling. Ash is grappling under the weight of Brax’s secret.
Worried about Ricky’s reaction, Phoebe calls in Nate to try and help her. He arrives as Ricky gives Kyle the third degree about his growing relationship with Phoebe, wondering if there’s anything going on between them. Ash and Kyle make themselves scarce, as Nate checks in on how she’s doing. He assures her it is alright to ask for help if she needs it. After he leaves, Ricky overhears Kyle and Ash talking about Gunno and assumes that they are seeking revenge. She orders them to stop living in the past as the lives they used to live must cease. If it doesn’t, she and Casey will leave.
Meanwhile, Zac and Leah arrive at the carnival, with discussion of her looking after herself. Zac excuses himself, citing his need to do stuff, but he’ll be back for VJ’s race. Leah thinks he’s being weird, but he promises he’s not. He’s looking forward to new horizons. Meanwhile, out on a run, Nate runs into Kat. Zac catches the pair and asks for their help. He needs them to distract Leah, because he’s going to propose! When VJ and Chris turn up at the house before the race, Zac asks for VJ’s permission to propose to his mother. VJ hugs Zac, thinking it’s a great idea.
Although Zac has the proposal planned already, Chris has a suggestion for a grand show of love. Rushing to the Surf Club, Chris announces to everyone that Zac is going to propose. Irene, Alf and John congratulate him. As the carnival kicks off, Chris frantically rushes around putting the final touches on Zac’s proposal. When Irene and Marilyn arrive at Leah’s house, she’s immediately suspect. They blindfold her and take her to the beach, where a guard of honour awaits. As she meets Zac, he professes his love. Four rubber duckys are upended, ‘will you marry me?”, written on them.
Getting down on a bended knee, Zac presents her with a ring. Shocked, Leah says no.
