Extended Summary
Marilyn is crying over the eviction notice at the store and tells Alf they tried to pay Ernie Jacobs the rent but he wouldn’t take it. Matt arrives and learns the bad news.
At the surf club, Paul wants to carry on seeing Emma but she needs to break up with Adam. Grant pops in and out for his running gear. Outside, Adam runs into Grant and tells him he could use another assistant for the magic act. Adam sees Paul leaving and tells him he’s lucky he’s not the jealous type since Paul is spending so much time with Emma. Adam goes inside and Emma tries to break up with him but Adam tells her how good she is for him so Emma can’t do it. She suggests asking Marilyn to help with the act.
Marilyn gives Paul too much change at the store and Alf sends her home to sort herself out. Donald arrives and they discuss Ernie Jacobs. If he’s like this now, what will he be like if elected to the council? Back home, Adam blames Marilyn for telling Ernie they didn’t have the money. Marilyn says she will fix it.
Marilyn asks for Donald’s advice at the Diner. He suggests Marilyn try talking to Ernie and appeal to his better nature, if he has one. At the counter, Grant tells Paul he was hoping he’d changed his mind about performing in the amateur night when he saw him playing at the surf club but Paul says he just felt like playing. They discuss Emma, and Grant realises Paul likes her.
Adam tells Matt that Emma was going to dump him for Paul because she went all quiet on him. Matt thinks he’s only worried about his ego and should just let her go as there’s nothing he can do about it. Adam says Emma’s the only girl he’s ever really cared about and he’s not going to give her up that easily. Outside the Diner, Emma tells Carly she’s waiting for the right moment to tell Adam.
Ernie makes a campaign speech in the rain outside the surf club. Marilyn applauds him loudly and asks for a word but Ernie tells her to go through his solicitor and drives off. Marilyn follows him to the Diner and gives him a sob story about how her parents died when she was little and she had to live with her grandma, then she died, but Ernie completely ignores her. Marilyn pleads with him; she’ll do anything to stay in the house. Ernie says it depends how far she’s prepared to go!
Grant finds Emma at the surf club again, waiting for Adam to come and practise the act. He tells Emma he thinks Paul likes her and asks if she can talk him into playing at the amateur night. Adam appears at the door and overhears Emma saying she will give it a try.
Marilyn brings Ernie back to the house. Matt is leaving for work and Marilyn quietly tells him she’s going to fix everything by being nice to Ernie. Matt leaves and Marilyn goes to make a cup of tea while Ernie makes himself comfortable on the couch.
Adam feeds Paul some lies at the Diner, claiming Emma is pretending to have the hots for him to talk him into playing at the amateur night. Paul says Emma hasn’t even mentioned the amateur night but Adam says she’s just biding her time. He asks Paul not to say anything about this conversation.
Marilyn talks about all the cleaning she does and Ernie says she must be in need of a massage and starts rubbing her shoulders. Marilyn asks him how often his wife does it and Ernie says she doesn’t do it at all any more, not realising Marilyn is talking about cleaning the oven! Marilyn is shocked when he puts his hand on her leg. Adam finds Matt is waiting outside the house in case things get out of hand. Ernie comes out of the house, accusing Marilyn of being all talk and no action and leading him on. He changes his tune when he sees the boys and tells them that they and “that hussy” will be out of the house in 10 days. They go inside and Marilyn tells them Ernie wanted hanky panky! Matt is surprised that’s not what Marilyn had in mind! Adam says this is great; he knows how to get rid of Jacobs and get back their lease.
Emma and Paul are walking past the Diner. Emma promises to break up with Adam tomorrow. He probably won’t want her in the magic act any more so she suggests Paul could play and she can turn the pages for him. Paul tells Emma she really had him fooled; she and Grant Mitchell can stick it. He storms off and Emma tells Carly she’s just made a big mistake.
