When Ruby and Nicole were predicting that the driving instructor that Charlie had arranged for Ruby would be old and stuffy, they were unaware that Alex, the young man standing next to them in the Diner, was a driving instructor. He introduced himself and Ruby realised he was her instructor. Their first lesson went well but when Ruby invited Alex for a coffee at the end of the lesson he told her that he had another student. Ruby got dressed up for their second test only for Alex to turn up and tell her he had to reschedule for after school. He ignored her when she flirted with him during the lesson, but once it was finished he told her that he thought she was cute but wasn’t allowed to date a student, but that she’d soon pass at which point she wouldn’t be a student anymore.

Alex was bemused by Ruby’s own serious attitude during their next lesson and told her that he already had a girlfriend. Ruby was upset and considered dropping him as her instructor but he convinced her to keep at it. Her mood was buoyed during their next lesson when he told her he and his girlfriend had broken up and they arranged a date. They shared a kiss at the end of a lesson but then Nicole saw him kissing his girlfriend, Gabby. When she asked him about it, he told her that he was going to break up with Gabby.

However, when Ruby confronted him and accused him of cheating on her, Alex retorted that since Gabby was his girlfriend he’d actually been cheating on her with Ruby, and that he’d heard of Ruby’s “easy” reputation and was after some fun. When Charlie found out what he’d said, she pulled him over and forced him to go and apologise to Ruby by threatening to report him for various minor driving offences and dating a student.
