Avril was the mother of Shelley Sutherland and grandmother of the Sutherland girls. She arrived in Summer Bay shortly after her estranged husband Geoff’s attempt to sail round the world had floundered there when his boat was damaged and his younger girlfriend Cathy left him. She stated that she was there to visit the family and get Geoff to sign some papers for their house. They went to the Diner together, causing Geoff to miss a dinner date with Colleen, where Avril revealed she’d enrolled in a literature course at university. Afterwards, Geoff chose to spend the night in a caravan so Avril could have his room in the house.

Next day, Geoff and Avril went for lunch at the surf club where they briefly met Vinnie and Gypsy. When Colleen found out, she stormed round there accusing Geoff of cheating on her with a floozy, only to be stopped in her tracks when she learned Avril was Geoff’s wife, making her the floozy. After a long talk, Avril admitted there had been faults on both sides and she’d dismissed the importance to Geoff of the retirement cruise he’d been planning for years. They went home together, with Avril promising to use the boat for short cruises once it had been repaired, and it turned out Kirsty had summoned her to Summer Bay in the hope of repairing their marriage.
