Paul was discovered by Grant playing piano in the school at lunch time and Grant tried to tell him he had real talent, suggesting he apply for a music scholarship to buy a piano at home. Paul refused to even think about a scholarship and instead took a job at Alf’s store to earn the money for a second hand piano. When his mother moaned about the price of the electricity bill, he offered her money. She was grateful but suspicious and warned him not to neglect his schoolwork. Grant helped Paul with his piano training but Alf inadvertently let slip why Paul was working so hard at his part time job and Lorraine turned up at The Surf Club and took Paul home insisting that he’d be wasting his life if he pursued a career as a musician.
Grant was told by Paul to leave him alone but he wasn’t easily dissuaded and organised a school concert for Paul to showcase his talents but Paul refused to sign up. He developed a crush on Emma Jackson and was amazed when she seemed to like him too. He wrote a song for her and was playing it when she walked in on him and complimented his playing. He refused to take the compliment and stormed out leaving the sheet music behind and Emma found out that the song had been written for her.
Emma approached him and asked him to play her song for her and after he was finished she kissed him. She admitted that she was still with Adam though and when Adam found out about Emma and Paul he challenged Paul to a fight. Paul finally won his mother’s acceptance of his piano playing and performed at the concert but Adam was annoyed with Paul for stealing his girlfriend and challenged him to a fight. Emma insisted Paul call the fight off when she heard and Paul did as she asked but Adam insulted Paul’s father causing Paul to punch him. Alf broke them up but when they explained why they were fighting he suggested they settle it in a boxing ring. He and Steven helped Paul to train for the fight as Adam was much bigger but Fisher found out about it and told Lorraine and Grant who in turn told Emma. Emma was furious and demanded he end it but Paul refused her and the fight went ahead. It was stopped when Emma, Marilyn and Carly soaked the competitors with a hose and Adam agreed to back down. Paul was furious with Emma for showing him up and wanted to end things but Emma convinced him not to.
He seemed to not believe Emma when she was accused of stealing the exam paper and accepted several dates with Vicki Baxter, causing Emma to dump him. Unknown to her though, he and Steven were plotting to clear Emma’s name and eventually Paul got Vicki to confess about setting Emma up. He managed to clear Emma’s name and she forgave him and they reunited. Soon enough Emma got a job on the Gold Coast and explained to Paul who was very understanding when she told him that her feelings had cooled and that she wanted to keep in touch as friends only. He agreed and she gave him a last kiss before departing and he was consoled by Grant and Bobby.
