Seen in flashbacks, Doctor Wayne was Penn Graham’s psychiatrist when he was incarcerated in a mental health clinic some time prior to his arrival in Summer Bay. Wayne quizzed Penn about the fact he had assaulted a group of men who had called him “Orphan”, with Penn replying that pain ties people together. Penn quizzed Wayne about his first name, since his name badge simply read “J. Wayne”, and he revealed it was Jonathan, causing Penn to laugh at the fact he was called John Wayne. Wayne quizzed him about the fact that his mother Tulip had committed suicide after Alf had ended their affair and Penn’s father had abandoned him not long after. Penn managed to convince Wayne and the rest of the assessment board that he no longer blamed Alf or his father for the way his life had turned out and Wayne agreed to release him.
