Matthew Lyons first appeared as a bully who made fun of Jai and hassled him at school, they stole his bag and threw it on the roof causing Jai to climb up after it. They continued to bully Jai and Ruby stepped in between them, wondering if Matthew was brave enough to hit a girl. later Matthew and his mates went after Jai again and after he insisted that they couldn’t hurt him, they pushed him off the pier into the water.
Matthew was next seen making an obscene comment to Kirsty and was put on detention by an overprotective Bartlett. He also hassled Ruby and Aden, calling the latter a psycho after he was released from the psychiatric clinic. He teased Melody for the same reasons on her return to school and when Geoff defended her, Miles had to break up a fight between Geoff and Matthew.
Ruby had been talking to an online friend about her father’s Alzheimer’s and made plans to meet up with ‘Skye’ but Skye failed to show for their meeting. Matthew turned up and suggested that Ruby fancied the girl in the photo and Matthew was alter seen on the school computers by Martin at the same time as Ruby, by computer, confronted Skye about not turning up.
The screen revealed that Matthew was really Skye.
After finding Ruby drunk, Matthew offered to walk her home and she agreed provided he stay ten meters away from her at all times. She reiterates her conditions after he saw her into her house but Matthew said he thought she was joking. Ruby insisted that she wasn’t and that she can’t stand him so Matthew left, commenting that he wished he’d just left her at the party.
Matthew continued to talk to Matthew online without knowing it was him and the real Matthew tried to talk to her, insisting that he knew what she was going through. Ruby told him to leave her alone but she later confided in her online friend, not realising it was Matthew, that she thought Matthew was kind of okay but still a loser.
Matthew found ruby’s journal and went to her house to return it but found the smoke alarm going off after Ross left the stove on. Ruby thanked Matthew for helping and he insisted that he knew what she was going through, speaking lines from her journal to convince her. He left, keeping the journal and used it to get close to Ruby, suggesting she take her mind off things by learning to surf, something she’d wanted to do for ages.
Matthew used the computers in the diner to talk to Ruby but he failed to turn the computers off after being interrupted by Annie and Jai and they discovered that he was posing as Skye. Annie and jai confronted him but matthew insisted that he aws Ruby’s friend but they insist he tells Ruby the truth. Thinking that Annie and jai would already have told her, Matthew landed himself in it by apologising to Ruby and she plotted her revenge.
In Noah’s she approached Matthew and kissed him, saying that she was glad he was Skye. She suggested they meet later and when they did she asked him to help her play out one of her fantasies by going skinny dipping with a boy she really liked. She insisted he had to strip first so that she knew she could trust him. As he stripped Ruby stole his bag and ran off while Annie and Jai filmed the whole thing. Ruby dumped his clothes and bag in the dunes but a note to her fell out his bag, explaining that he really liked her and that his Gran does have Alzheimer’s. Ruby tried to stop jai from uploading the footage to the internet but was too late and it was bought to Matthew’s attention by some Summer Bay High girls who teased him over it.
Ruby tried to apologise to Matthew but he told her he was going to get revenge. After lunch they found photocopies of Ruby’s journal plastered all over school and as Nicole and Annie tried to remove them, Ruby arrived and Matthew teased her that her crush on Mr Copeland was riveting reading. ruby charged at Matthew and had to be pulled back and he was suspended for posting the diary around school.
He ran into Ruby in the Diner and insisted that he was going to get even with her. She reminded him about the journal but he told her that it wasn’t enough. When Melody arrived at Noah’s later all dressed up, Matthew made a move on her and invited her to a party at the caravan park house. Clearly drunk, Matthew suggested they take things upstairs and Melody agreed but he was dragged back out by a furious Miles after Jai informed him of what was going on. Ruby and Geoff warned Matthew off Melody and Matthew insisted that he would drop Melody in an instant if Ruby was interested. He told them that he was interested in any girl who was up for some action, causing Ruby to go for him but when Matthew grabbed at Ruby, Geoff stepped in and their fight was broken up by Kirsty.
Miles quizzed Matthew and Geoff who admitted that the fight was over Melody. Melody continued to sneak round seeing Matthew and he handed her beer. Drunk, they wandered back to the caravan park and were invited to a party. Nicole tried to warn Melody off but she refused to listen and when Matthew left Melody alone with one of the guys, he came on too heavy and Melody was rescued by Nicole. Matthew emerged from a van and insisted he had been locked in when Nicole had a go at him for not being there for Melody. Matthew and Melody met up the next day to talk about what had happened but when her friends attacked him Melody defended him. Ruby insisted that Matthew was only with Melody to get at her but Melody viciously defended Matthew before leaving with him.
At the caravan park Matthew was tricked by melody into admitting that he only went out with her to make Ruby jealous. When Melody wondered if there was anything attractive about her and Matthew told her she was a cool nerd but insisted she had no right to criticise him when she was still in love with Geoff.
Despite their relationship being over Matthew convinced Melody to do his assignment for him but when they were caught out, Melody claimed Matthew had blackmailed her into doing it. Matthew confronted her but she insisted that she had no choice because Miles would kick her out the house so Matthew insisted she help him finish his assignment. Matthew bought drugs off Xavier and suggested to Melody that they use them to have fun while everyone else was at the formal.
