Following the death of Angie Russell, investigating officer Detective Brannigan brought Angie’s mother Monica to the bay. Upon arriving at Summer Bay House she met Rhys Sutherland, who knew her from his younger years when he dated Angie, and was reunited with her grandson Dylan. When they all sat down to talk, Monica explained that Angie’s troubles began in her childhood, when her father left the family home. Angie adored him and, wanting to see him as the perfect man, she refused to accept that he was flawed – and so blamed Monica for his leaving them. Monica believed that, even from the age of 12, Angie might well have killed her and accepts that she should have sought help at the time. When Detective Brannigan asked if Angie had any enemies, Monica tearfully explained that it could be anyone from anywhere – everyone was her enemy.

After Dylan confessed to being the one who accidentally killed Angie, he left for the city to live with Monica whilst awaiting his trial for manslaughter.
