Andy was a widower who met Rachel at a Mother’s group meeting. He was struggling to cope with bringing up two children on his own and needed some support. Despite some resistance from the group’s leader, Andy with help from Rachel, joined in the meeting. However, it was soon cut short when Sophia, his daughter, decided to run out of the Surf Club. Andy went after her but returned later and went for a coffee with Rachel to bond over being ‘bad mothers’. Andy explained how much he was worried about Sophia not communicating with him but Rachel told him it was understandable.

Andy and Rachel began to spend quite a bit of time together which Rachel sharing her problems with him and vice versa. However, Tony became increasingly irritated with the amount of time that Rachel was spending dealing with Andy’s problems and this wasn’t helped when Andy kept calling Rachel for advice about dealing with Sophia. The final straw came when Tony saw Andy holding Harry and he demanded Rachel come home to talk about how dependant Andy had become on her. Rachel insisted that she was not going to turn her back on Andy and stormed out of the house. Andy found out about Tony’s concerns and apologised for coming between them.

When Leah dropped a plate in the Diner and Sophia didn’t react, Rachel told Andy that she might have hearing problems and that he should get her checked out. Andy began to realise why Sophia hadn’t been communicating with him and felt bad that he didn’t pick it up sooner. He then went off to the hearing centre to get Sophia tested and thanked Rachel for being an amazing friend.
