Sophia first appeared with her Father, Andy, at the first Mother’s group meeting that Rachel and Harry went to. Andy was having some problems communicating with Sophia following her Mother’s death and to demonstrate his point Sophia ran out of the Surf Club, with Andy following close behind. After calming her down Andy sought advice from Rachel about how best to deal with Sophia’s increasingly difficult behaviour but Rachel told him that Sophia’s behaviour was understandable after losing her Mother. Sophia then disappeared again but was soon found in the kitchen by Leah.

As Andy was at the end of his tether, he put Sophia into day care to see if that calmed her down but it didn’t seem to help. Rachel thought that spending time with her would help so she began to spend time at Andy’s place with the family. Sophia seemed to react more positively to Rachel and became relaxed around her.

The next week in the Diner, Rachel got to the bottom of Sophia’s problems. When Leah dropped a plate and Sophia didn’t react, Rachel realised that Sophia was partly deaf and advised Andy to take her to a hearing centre in Yabbie Creek to get her tested.
