Brodie and Dani first came across Jim Tyler as a derro on the beach how they reported to Alf, who told Jim camping was allowed on the beach. Later that day, Brodie was attacked by a dog whilst walking through the caravan park, but Jim came along and saved the day. After Brodie told Rhys about what Jim had done for her, Rhys invited Jim around for dinner and he was soon staying in a van as well as doing some oddjobs such as cleaning gutters around the caravan.

His health then took a nosedive and was sent to hospital. He was soon released and Don recognised him. After Sally’s hospitalisation, Summer Bay High found themselves a teacher down and Don asked James if he could cover for a short period. James accepted, however his ways were outdated and he struggled.

Jim suffered a nervous breakdown in a classroom after some taunting by Nick, who thought that Jim had being moving in on Irene. He was taken to hospital and then transferred to the city. Looking for some contacts in Jim’s caravan, Irene and Brodie found out that fifteen years before Jim had accidently ran over his son.
