Dani and Brodie were shocked when they saw classmate Woody with his father Ian, a tough and scary looking character who was friends with equally tough and scary looking characters. When the two girls told him that Woody was meant to be reading poetry at the school talent night, Ian simply laughed at the idea.

The following week, when Woody took his class hostage at the school, the police called Ian to try and talk him out. Ian was given a loudhailer to communicate with Woody but instead of trying to coax him out, he simply yelled abuse at him, telling him to stop messing around and calling him a nutcase. Both Don Fisher and Inspector Carter realised his approach wasn’t going to improve matters so Carter politely took the speaker off him, thanked him for his help and left another officer to take details from him.

When Shelley tried to get the bottom of Woody’s behaviour, she visited his home and spoke to his mother Louise. Louise said that Ian would deal with her but Shelley managed to understand from her distracted ramblings that Ian had disapproved of Woody growing attached to his dog and forced him to shoot the animal. When Ian came home, he was angry to see Shelley there and ordered her out.
