Following the incident in which Woody held his class hostage at Summer Bay High, Shelley Sutherland visited the family home to talk to his mother Louise, in an attempt to get to the bottom of Woody’s behaviour. Initially withdrawn, Louise started to open up and told of how close she and Woody used to be, but her husband felt that boys shouldn’t be hanging around their mothers. Ian wanted Woody to toughen up, teaching him how to use guns and forcing him to shoot his pet dog. As the behaviour continued, Louise decided to switch off from the world, figuring that since she didn’t have the power to change things, she wasn’t going to take any notice. The visit came to a swift end when Ian returned home and ordered Shelley out of the house.

Seeing the same detached behaviour from Woody in the holding cell, Shelley felt he had learned from his mother’s example to shut out the world if he couldn’t cope.
