1991 Set 1

First Episode: 679 (7th January 1991)
Last Episode: 758 (1st May 1991)

Added: Michael & Haydn
Removed: Steven & Grant

The debut of the show’s fourth season, airing on Monday 7th January 1991, saw a complete overhaul to the opening titles.

Whilst still in the same style, all character shots and filler shots were changed – with all but one of the fillers now consisting solely of surfer shots. For the first time viewers were treated to a wide shot overlooking ‘Summer Bay’, something which would become commonplace in following years.

For the first time, the end shot seen through the cut-out of the Home and Away logo also changed, now showing a sunrise over the ocean. Instead of being filled in with colour after fully appearing on-screen, the logo now remained transparent over this shot, giving it a golden colour.

This particular set of titles actually came with spoilers of sorts – Steven Matheson had been removed, foreshadowing his departure three weeks later – and Michael Ross was added for the first time alongside Pippa, in a ‘couple’ shot which pretty much answered the “will they, won’t they” question posed in the 1990 season finale.

Other changes consisted of Grant Mitchell, who had left 2 weeks before the end of the 1990 season, being removed and Michael’s son Haydn Ross being added.
