Extended Summary
Lynn and Steven turn up at the hospital to see Frank;Steven has brought some magazines and Lynn has brought a pot plant. They find Roo with Frank and he asks them to give them a moment.Lynn seems to want to make a few choice comments to Roo but Steven drags her out.Roo explains that the lies started because she was scared of being a single mother but as it went on she realised how much Frank meant to her and how much she wanted him to be the father. It wasn’t until she got to church that she realised exactly what she was doing but now she loves him and wants them to stay together.Taking her hand, Frank admits he still loves her but says if they’d got married they’d have ended up hating each other within two years.Roo accepts it’s over, saying she always messes things up.She leaves, passing a waiting Steven and Lynn.As soon as she’s out of sight of them round the corner, she starts crying.
Celia is looking after Alf’s shop, where Lance is debating whether to spend $20 on a fishing rod in order to catch his own food and be self-sufficient.Donald comes in to buy some sherry and asks Celia if she knows how long Barbara’s staying for.Celia didn’t even know Barbara was coming and Donald has to explain to her about Alan’s accident that prevented her attending Roo’s wedding. They suspect it might be Alan that Barbara wants to talk to him about.Lance, who has been hovering nearby, takes the fishing rod.Donald complains about Barbara raising the children herself until she makes a mess of it and wants his help, Celia snaps that he may have had a negative effect on them by having minimal contact for four years and he’s as bad as Alf. Donald asks if Roo is still planning to return to school and suggests it won’t be easy for her, Celia tells him it’s his job to make sure it is.
At the house, Steven and Lynn are telling Carly and Lance about Roo visiting Frank and how he didn’t want to talk about it.Lance tells them about Barbara’s visit. They are distracted when Samantha appears on the television as a model in a commercial, the “Passion Girl”.Lance seems taken with her.Carly hits him with a cushion.
The next morning, Steven and Bobby are warming up for an early morning jog when Carly comes out, wanting to join them. The others tease her about wanting to lose weight.Steven has soon outpaced the girls, with Carly just behind Bobby. After a two kilometre run to the beach, Steven stops to talk to Lance, who is fishing nearby.Carly and Bobby collapse exhausted next to them.Lance tells Steven to go easy on them because they’re only sheilas and tells Carly she might injure her “top drawer”.Carly and Bobby push him in the sea.The trio head for home and Bobby encourages Carly to keep up the exercise.Steven doesn’t seem as keen and runs on ahead again.Carly apologises to Bobby about the money.
Celia is bemused when Lance comes past her house carrying two small fish, soaking wet and grumbling about sheilas.Inside, Roo is getting ready for school.Celia tells her she’s done the hard part by deciding to keep the baby and talking to Frank and that Stewarts don’t give up.Roo suggests she tells Alf that.
At the school, Steven and Lynn ask Bobby about Barbara. She says she saw her occasionally when she picked the children up:Alan, who’s about her age, and a girl whose name she can’t remember.Lynn is surprised since she hadn’t heard there was a son. They see Roo, who Bobby calls “the Terminator”, but otherwise they ignore her.Donald calls Roo into his office and tells her if she gets any flack she should come and see him.Roo says she’d rather deal with it herself.
Barbara arrives at Celia’s, with Celia upset she had to hear about her visit from Donald. She notices Barbara’s large amount of luggage and asks if she’s staying long.Barbara says that depends on how Donald reacts to her news.A short while later, Celia has heard the news and asks Barbara why she didn’t go to Donald for help, Barbara says he would have laughed.Celia also asks why Barbara told Morag and not her but Barbara says Celia would have told Donald.
Lance goes to see Frank at the hospital, waking him up, and explains they are working down the road. (Throughout the conversation, the patient in the next bed tosses and turns and glares at Lance, obviously wanting to get some rest.)Lance explains to Frank that his Uncle Roy is having a reopening for his shop and has offered him money if he finds a celebrity, so he wants Carly to pose as Samantha.Frank suggests he talk to Martin but Lance says Martin would just let him do all the work and take the money. He admits he and Carly had a falling out and wants Frank to ask her for him;Frank refuses.
Bobby is telling Steven and Lynn that no-one talked to Roo when she suddenly spots Barbara at the school. Steven heads home but Bobby and Lynn want to stay and find out what happens.Barbara goes into the office where Donald asks her what’s wrong with Alan, Barbara says he’s fine and that isn’t what she’s come about.Outside, Bobby and Lynn crouch to listen at the door;Bobby advises Lynn to pretend they’ve dropped something and Lynn admits she isn’t good at that sort of thing before they are distracted by Donald’s raised voice.Donald has heard Barbara’s news and refuses to let her do it.Barbara tells him it’s too late, it’s already done.
