Extended Summary
Lance and Martin are sneaking around outside Russell and Dawn’s house with torches.Finding an open window, they climb inside, knocking over a vase in the process.Since the house is empty, Martin goes to search elsewhere, leaving Lance to check the bedroom.
Frank is piling up the furniture Brett bought him and writing out a sign saying “Free to good home”.Narelle again tries and fails to persuade him to keep the furniture and take the job.Frank notices that she’s dressed up and she explains that Bruce Jones, the captain of the Yabbee Creek football team, might be calling round, since he recently broke up with his girlfriend after finding her kissing one of his mates.
Martin comes back into the bedroom.Lance hasn’t found the lottery ticket, although he has found Dawn’s underwear. They hear a car driving up outside and realiseRussell and Dawn are home.Russell carries Dawn into the bedroom.Lance and Martin are hiding under the bed and it’s clear that the couple are up to something they really don’t want to be listening to.Some time later, the couple are asleep and Russell is snoring loudly.Lance and Martin sneak out from under the bed but a sleepy Russell starts stroking Martin’s hair, thinking he’s Dawn.He realises his mistake and he and Dawn wake up.Russell chases Lance and Martin out of the house, calling out that he knows where they live.
Lance and Martin arrive back at the store flat, where Narelle is asleep on the sofa.Lance wants to stay there for the night since Russell will probably go looking for him at the caravan park. They realise they might be wrong about the lottery ticket, since Russell didn’t know why they were there. They wake up Narelle, who is disappointed that Bruce didn’t turn up.
Tom is woken up by Russell hammering on his door, having found Lance’s caravan empty. He wants to know where he can find Lance and Martin, saying they broke into his house to spy on Dawn.Sally comes down and wants to know what a perv is.Tom tells her go back upstairs and she complains that no-one tells her anything.Tom tells Russell he’ll take him to Lance and Martin but he’s going to hear their side of the story before he lets Russell tear them apart. At the flat, Tom asks Lance and Martin what they were doing at Russell and Dawn’s place.Martin claims they saw some suspicious lights and thought the place was being burgled but Tom doesn’t believe him.Lance tells the truth:that he won the lottery and thought Russell had taken the ticket.Tom doesn’t believe that either, especially when he sees Dawn’s underwear in Lance’s pocket. He opens the door and calls out that Russell can come in.
Next morning, Carly is teasing Lance as he sits in his caravan, nursing some cuts and bruises.Martin comes in, feeling similarly sore. After Carly’s gone, they complain that not only have they lost the ticket and copped a beating but they have to pay for the vase as well.At the store, Tom tells Ailsa about what happened. When he mentions Lance’s story about the ticket, Ailsa realises Lance was telling the truth but doesn’t say anything. At the caravan, Lance and Martin are looking for the ticket again when Sally comes in with some comics she borrowed off Lance, saying she’s finished them and wants to borrow some more. The boys are too busy to talk to her so she storms out, saying Lance is no fun anymore.Lance checks the comics when Martin knocks them on the floor and finds the lottery ticket inside one.As they celebrate, Ailsa arrives with the news they didn’t actually need the ticket, since the lottery company have Lance’s details. She tries to convince Lance to invest the money wisely but Martin thinks he needs to look a success to be a success, with expensive clothes and flash cars.Soon after, Lance and Martin are speeding around town in a sports car.
Narelle is filling Frank in on what happened with Lance and Martin the previous night and also on why Bruce didn’t turn up:He was busy making up with the mate he caught with his girlfriend.Roo turns up, having seen the furniture piled up outside, astonished that Frank’s giving it away. She again tries to convince him to take the job with Brett but he refuses and starts ringing round about other jobs, most of which seem to have already gone.At school, Roo approaches Carly and asks her to help talk Frank round. Carly says she’s caused enough trouble at home lately and she’s staying out of it.
Ailsa finds Alf fixing a light for Celia. She asks him if he’ll give Lance some business advice and he says he will if he asks but he’s not going to force it on him.Alf thinks Lance should invest in the Macklin development but Ailsa thinks it’s too risky and is uneasy about how much Alf seems to trust Gordon.Lance and Martin draw up behind Carly in the sports car.Initially she’s amused until they tell her that the lottery ticket she bought won the jackpot and she’s left flabberghasted at how things have turned out.
Ailsa and Frank are sat on deckchairs in the store flat.Ailsa tells Frank she has a reason for him to take the Macklin job that he probably hasn’t heard before. She doesn’t trust the Macklins and thinks they’ll either pull out and cause all their investors to lose their money or turn the town into Luna Park. She needs someone on the inside to find out what they’re up to.Frank realises she wants him to spy on them and Ailsa admits he’s right.Frank agrees, saying Brett won’t know what hit him.
