Extended Summary
Rory watches Adam surfing and asks if he could be as good as him. Adam encourages him. They head back to the surf club, where Rory apologises for going out with Carly, saying he didn’t know about her history with Adam. Adam says he shouldn’t worry about it because it’s over. Rory tells him how Carly backed off when he tried to kiss her and thinks she still likes Adam. Adam says they had nothing special.
Bobby comes home and holds up the letter from Danny. Don realises he’s left town. Bobby downplays her hurt, saying she’s a survivor, and hugs Don, saying she’d rather be with her dad than be alone. Don reads the letter and says that getting help is the right thing for Danny. Bobby suggests that Danny might come back for her; she knows it’s a slim hope but at least it’s not final. She suggests she and Don go for a walk to Stewart’s Point.
Alf is running Emma through some questions prior to her driving test while Ailsa wishes her luck. Emma is worried about getting the infamous Cranky Franky, who wears a green bow tie and always fails everyone. Alf points out that there are three driving examiners in Yabbie Creek so she probably won’t get him. At the examination centre, Alf runs her through some more questions as the examiner approaches. Emma is relieved to see he’s wearing a red necktie and compliments him on it. He thanks her, saying his wife normally makes him wear green bowties…Alf waits for Emma after her test and she tells him it went badly and Franky’s wife has gone on holiday. Franky calls her inside.
Rory looks at an astrological chart and tells Sally it shows Adam and Carly are meant to be together. Sally says Carly thinks she’s meant to be with lots of people but gets excited about the thought of being a bridesmaid if they get married. Rory thinks he’d be best man but first they have to work out why they split up. Sally thinks it’s habit since Carly always breaks up with people but Rory says there must be something Adam hasn’t done. They head to the Diner where they buy chocolate milkshakes and try to draw Carly on whether she likes chocolates or flowers. Carly thinks Rory’s planning to buy them for her but he assures her he isn’t. Alf and Emma arrive and Emma announces she passed her test. Ailsa and Carly congratulate her and Emma says she got Franky onside by complimenting his tie. Alf says he has to go to the store and Rory asks for a lift. Emma asks to borrow the car.
Viv is cooking lunch when Don and Bobby arrive back from their hike and she commiserates Bobby on Danny’s departure. Don notes the three of them are born survivors. Later, Don gets a phone call and tells Bobby that the Department have found a foster family for Viv: the Johnsons, who live in the city and have two teenage daughters. Bobby protests that Viv doesn’t need a family because she’s got them. Don says the Department are worried Viv has no mother figure. Viv overhears Don saying it’s best to arrange a meeting between her and the Johnsons as soon as possible and storms out. Don and Bobby don’t realise she overheard them and neither of them are happy with the situation.
At the store, Sally tells Alf that Tom will be home the following week and Ross and Louise are taking her to the mountains for the holidays. Rory is reading some surfing magazines nearby and asks Alf for some chocolates. He says they’re for his girlfriend: Pam Burridge, the famous surfer. Alf is slightly bewildered by the conversation.
Rory writes up a card for the flowers. Sally isn’t too sure about him calling Carly foxy but Rory says it’s what Tom Cruise would say. Carly arrives home and they tell her she’s got flowers and chocolates from a secret admirer. Carly reads the card and storms to the surf club where she hits Adam with the flowers, telling him he can’t win her round that way, and derides him calling her foxy, asking if he thinks he’s Tom Cruise. Rory arrives as Carly is leaving and apologises to Adam, saying the flowers were to Pam Burridge from her boyfriend Alan and Carly got them by mistake. Back at the house, Rory is aghast that Carly destroyed the flowers but Sally points out she’s guzzling the chocolates so they got that right. Rory thinks they should try something else but Sally refuses to help: she’s been working all day and not got any chocolates, she’s got books to read and Carly’s too mean and nasty to deserve anyone.
Viv tells Emma about the phone call; she thinks Don wants rid of her. She says she always thought this would happen, which is why she didn’t get close to Steven, but Bobby’s been like a sister to her and made her feel better about losing Tammy. Emma suggests she asks to stay but Viv refuses to beg. At home, Bobby is trying to convince Don Viv should stay with them. Don points out Bobby nearly left town but Bobby thinks he should let Viv decide what she wants. Viv arrives back and tells Don she already knows about the Johnsons and she’s going to go and pack. Don looks disappointed.
