Extended Summary
Fisher and Hunt discuss the ballistics test outside the house. Fisher wonders if the results could be wrong but Hunt wonders if Fisher gave them the wrong gun. Even though Fisher denies it, Hunt says Al is sticking to his story and there’ll have to be further investigation. Inside the house, Bobby and Viv celebrate when Fisher tells them the news but Fisher cuts the good mood short by saying the charges haven’t been dropped. In his caravan, Al complains about Fisher keeping the gun. Sophie suggests it might have been the wrong gun but Al says he knows it wasn’t. Sophie realises that means Fisher’s innocent. Al agrees but says it doesn’t matter and still thinks he can get the $10,000.
At the mobile home, Martin continues to deny Marilyn’s accusation that he’s jealous. He says he’s not interested in Greta and only someone like Andrew would be. When Marilyn points out Andrew dated Carly and Stacey, Martin changes tack and says he must be on the rebound. Marilyn says she’d hit him if she didn’t know he didn’t mean it. Greta arrives home and Martin says he’s going down the beach. Marilyn tells Greta to go with him. Martin continues to be moody as they sit on the beach, complaining about the way she was talking to Andrew. Greta says she’s sorry if the conversation bored him. Andrew comes over and gives Greta the book he mentioned. Greta is soon engrossed in it.
Bobby tries to convince Fisher to seek legal advice but he says he needs to think first and goes to lie down. Bobby tells Viv that Al’s the problem, if it wasn’t for his statement the police wouldn’t be going after Fisher, and recalls how he used to beat her. Viv points out that even she believed him. Bobby says they need to get evidence to take to the police. Sophie is mending clothes in the caravan when Bobby and Viv arrive and demand she tells them what she knows. Sophie protests she hasn’t done anything, then Al arrives back and tells them to leave. When he taunts them about Fisher going to jail, Bobby goes to hit him but Al catches the blow and says if she tries it again he’ll have her charged with assault. After they’ve gone, Al grabs Sophie by the wrist and forces her to sit down, demanding she tell him what she said. Later, a drunken Al apologises to Sophie for hitting her, raving on about how everyone wants to split them up because they look down on him and saying they’re not going to leave town until he’s put Fisher away. Sophie waits until he’s passed out then slips away.
Matt storms into the Diner and asks Ailsa where Bobby is. He demands to know the truth about the rumours that Fisher’s innocent. Bobby tells him about the ballistics test but Matt thinks Fisher gave the police the wrong gun and insists he’s going to be locked away. Celia goes to see Fisher and offers her help, saying she’s building up character witnesses for him. Fisher tells her he doesn’t want to make it a public issue and her actions could be seen as contempt of court. Celia says it’s better than threatening Al and Fisher wonders what she means. Meanwhile, Matt finds Sophie sitting on the beach. He notices her bruised face and she says she fell over. Matt complains about Fisher and Sophie says it’s nothing to do with her. Matt insists that the court will get to the truth and tear Fisher’s argument to shreds but Sophie doesn’t seem comforted by his words.
Martin reminds Greta they’re supposed to be going to a movie together but Greta is too busy reading Andrew’s book and Marilyn backs her up. Marilyn suggests Martin goes to the movie on his own and he leaves in a huff. Later, he is eating with Andrew at the Diner and moans about the change in Greta. Andrew says there’s nothing wrong with her being more confident but Martin says they were getting on well beforehand. When Andrew suggests there’s more to it than friendship, Martin protests she was just someone to hang out with while Lance was away. Nearby, Bobby is on the phone to Fisher and complains to Ailsa that he wants her to stay away from Al. Martin admits to Andrew that he thinks he does like Greta but he doesn’t understand it because she’s not good looking. Andrew says it’s a sign that Martin’s growing up and encourages him to do something about it.
In the caravan, Sophie is packing a bag. She is about to leave when she hears Al returning. She quickly hides the bag under the sink and busies herself cleaning. Al asks when dinner’s ready. Meanwhile, Hunt visits Bobby and Fisher. Despite Bobby’s protests, he warns her that if she interferes with a witness it will harm Fisher’s case.
Martin arrives home and tries to talk to Greta who is still engrossed in the book. She reads him a passage about pretending to agree with people so they’ll approve of you and, when Martin goes along with it, says it’s what he’s doing now. She also reads him a passage on self-image and asks him if he feels inadequate when people understand things easier than he does. He agrees that he does but says he deals with it by hanging around with Lance. Greta says the idea is to improve yourself. Martin takes her glasses off and kisses her. Greta is delighted and kisses him back.
Al is asleep again while Sophie is finishing off the dishes. She retrieves her bag and is about to leave when Al asks where she’s going. He snatches the bag off her and forces her to sit down again, grabbing her collar and telling her it’s not a game.
