Episode 485

Extended Summary

Sally and Lance haven’t caught many flies on their fly papers at Summer Bay House to feed Lily the frog. Tom arrives home with Sophie; she’s going to be staying with them. Sally is thrilled and shows Lily to Sophie. Sophie watches outside and laughs as Lance and Sally try to teach Lily to jump. Martin comes along on his lunch break and asks Sophie if she’s staying here while her old man’s in jail. Lance apologises for Martin.

Inside, Tom says Carly wasn’t very friendly to Sophie but Carly reminds him of her lying and stealing. Tom says it was only because Al forced her. He suggests Carly take her to the Diner this afternoon and introduce her to some of the other kids. They go outside and Carly invites Sophie to the Diner but she doesn’t want people staring at her. She eventually agrees. Ben appears and tells Carly he’ll see her tonight. Sally says Ben is cute and Carly tells her she’s not going to let her ruin things like she did with Grant!

Celia is telling Marilyn about Al Simpson at the store. Marilyn feels sorry for Sophie and Mr Fisher and is surprised she didn’t know all this was going on. Lance and Sally arrive and Marilyn complains about how much time Lance has been spending with the frog. Celia thinks it’s ridiculous trying to teach a frog to jump. Sally finds a jumping frog toy that will be just the job (they really do have everything you could possibly need at Stewart’s Store, don’t they?).

At the Diner, Carly asks Viv and Emma to talk to Sophie but Emma isn’t keen after all Sophie did. Viv says it was all down to Sophie’s father and goes to talk to her. A delivery man comes in with some flowers from Ben for Carly, along with a formal invitation for this evening. Emma suggests going for a swim but Sophie can’t swim so Emma and Viv plan to teach her.

Back at the house, Lance and Sally are trying to teach Lily to jump with the toy. Dag Dog runs off with the toy and squashes it but Lily starts jumping.

At the beach, Sophie is worried that the water looks a bit rough. A girl calls Sophie the “killer’s kid” and Emma stands up for her. Sophie says that’s what people will keep saying but Viv tells her to just ignore them. Emma and Viv pick Sophie up and carry her into the sea!

Ben and Carly are at the Sands restaurant. They talk about Dave. He and Ben have been best mates since they were kids. Carly doesn’t think Ben’s name sounds Italian but it’s short for Benito. Sometimes he thinks about leaving the army and staying in one place for a while, maybe even getting married and having a couple of kids! He and Dave are due to sign up again soon but it depends. Carly asks what it depends on, but the answer is obvious from the look on his face.

Tom is trying to fix the frog toy for Sally. He sends her to bed and talks to Sophie who thinks Viv and Emma were only being nice to her today because Carly asked them to. She doesn’t want to stay around here after what happened. Tom tells Sophie she has to try and put it behind her and start again; it should be a picnic for someone as tough as her. Sophie says if he thinks her life is a picnic they’re talking a different language and she storms off.

Later, Ben and Carly are back at the house and making coffee. They kiss just as Dave comes in, drunk. Ben tries to get him out but causes a commotion. Tom comes downstairs and throws them both out. Ben comes to apologise the next morning but Carly isn’t having it. She accuses him of being more interested in Dave than anyone else and shuts the door in his face.

Back at the caravan, Ben has a go at Dave. Dave goes to the Diner and says sorry to Carly but Carly tells him to get lost. Dave tells Carly she’s not the first chick to take a fancy to Ben and she won’t be the last. Carly tells Ailsa as far as she’s concerned it’s over.

At the beach, Viv asks Sophie how things are going with the Fletchers. Sophie doesn’t think she will be there for long. Viv tells Sophie how her father used to lock her in the cupboard and starve her. Sophie asks if it’s wrong of her to be glad that Al is in jail. Viv thinks she’s finally letting go.

Carly doesn’t want to serve Ben at the Diner but Ailsa forces her. Ben tries to apologise again but Carly doesn’t want to hear it. Ben says he doesn’t think he’s ever met anyone so pig-headed in his life and storms out!
