Extended Summary
Sophie is leaving for school and is surprised to see Martin polishing Lance’s car; shouldn’t he be taking it easy? Martin tells Tom he’s borrowing it for his date with Carly. Tom reminds him that Carly is engaged to Ben. Martin thinks his not being around for much longer has made Carly realise how much she likes him. Tom returns to the house where Carly is ironing a dress. She doesn’t want Martin to get the wrong idea. Tom tells her it might be too late!
At the school, Donald gives Vicki one last chance to withdraw her accusations about Grant but Vicki insists she’s not lying. In the corridor, Emma apologises to Grant over Vicki almost drowning; she was only trying to help. Donald takes Grant to his office to meet the inspector, Mrs. Williams. Grant wants to know what happens if the allegations can’t be disproved. Mrs. Williams tells him she has to put the welfare of the students first.
Celia arrives at the Diner and asks if Ailsa can give the Reverend Goodhope a room because her spare room is being painted. Ailsa finally gives in after Celia gives her a guilt trip. Adam thinks Ailsa should just have said no, so when Celia pops back in Ailsa lands him with the task of carrying the reverend’s suitcase!
Mrs. Williams finishes questioning Grant. Donald tells her that Vicki is a well-known troublemaker. Mrs. Williams says that doesn’t automatically mean she’s lying. Donald leaves the office to fetch Vicki, and Grant thanks him for trying.
Carly has dinner with Martin at the Sands restaurant and, still thinking he’s dying, asks how he can be so happy knowing what’s going to happen to him. Martin says it’s no big deal and at least he won’t die of boredom still selling hot dogs at 50. His mum is over it and his dad thinks it’s the best thing that’s ever happened! Carly tells him a lot of people in Summer Bay are going to miss him, including her.
Vicki is in the office, telling Mrs. Williams that Grant is lying. Mrs. Williams tells her that Grant’s career could be severely affected and she wants her to be absolutely certain. Vicki continues to insist that Grant invited her to his caravan.
At the restaurant, Carly is bewildered as Martin tells a joke about someone being told they only have 24 hours to live. Carly wants to tell Martin something. She starts by saying she’s engaged to Ben, and Martin says he doesn’t want to hurt Ben either but it’s not like they planned this!
Donald brings Grant back into the office where Mrs. Williams tells him Vicki has maintained the allegations. She has no alternative but to recommend his immediate transfer. Grant says they can have his resignation instead.
Celia and Adam wait at the bus stop and Celia tells Adam how brave Reverend Goodhope is risking his life amongst people of a different race, colour and creed; it’s not unheard of for natives to kill missionaries. The bus arrives and Celia is taken aback to discover Reverend Goodhope is black.
Bobby, Ailsa, Matt and Emma are commiserating with Grant at the Diner. His only hope is if Vicki tells the truth. Emma and Bobby want to beat the truth out of Vicki. Ailsa won’t hear of it but Emma looks like she has a plan.
Alf gets the bad news from Ailsa on the phone at the store that Reverend Goodhope is going to be staying with them. Adam and the reverend come in as Alf is ranting about having a religious lunatic in his house! Celia comes in and introduces Reverend Goodhope. Alf looks horrified.
Martin drops Carly home. Carly asks if he’s going to be around for a while but Martin says this time tomorrow he’s history! He asks if he can kiss Carly as it’s his last chance before he goes. Carly agrees and Martin kisses her. He tells Carly he’ll write to her as soon as he gets there and Carly asks what he’s talking about. She learns he’s joining the army, not dying. She throws him out and wipes his kiss off.
Emma finds Vicki in an empty classroom and tells her that Mitch has quit. Emma is going to tell everyone what she did so she’d better get used to not having any friends as no-one is going to want to know her.
