Extended Summary
The Diner is full of teenagers, including Steven, his friend Errol, Viv and Emma. Bobby complains about them all being there at the weekend and wonders if they’ve got nothing better to do. Emma recalls that she’s caddying for Alf and suggests Viv earns herself some money by offering to caddy for Grant, who is chatting to Bobby and Ailsa at the counter. Bobby suggests Grant finds something for the teens to do but Grant says the weekend is his break from looking after teenagers. Emma and Viv come over and tell Grant that Alf’s really serious about the golf game, suggesting Grant take Viv on as a caddy to even things up. Grant wonders if Emma’s on a commission and asks how much Alf is paying her. Emma says $5 an hour. Grant offers Viv $10 an hour. Ailsa suggests Bobby find some sport for the teens to do. She chats to Steven and Matt, who recall there’s a touch football tournament starting soon but Summer Bay doesn’t have a team. Bobby offers to be manager and Steven suggests getting Tom to coach.
At the caravan park house, Carly is heading off to meet a prospective employer, Jeff Cusack. Pippa tells her to be careful, since she thinks Jeff is a conman. Carly goes to the Diner to meet Jeff. He shows her some jewellery which he says costs $10 from the wholesaler and they sell them for $15.He says people can sell twenty a week and even his worst salesperson sold two an hour, Carly could easily sell four. Bobby watches the conversation and tells Ailsa she’s also suspicious of Jeff. Jeff asks Carly for $500 for her fifty pieces. Carly is shocked, since she thought she was working for a commission. Jeff says people took advantage when he did it that way and says he’ll buy back any she doesn’t sell. Carly says she’ll think about it. Afterwards, Bobby and Ailsa attempt to dissuade Carly but she doesn’t listen.
Alf, Emma, Grant and Viv arrive at the golf club. Alf tells Emma to park the car while he sorts out Grant’s green fees. Emma parks it in a space marked “Manager”. While she and Viv are unloading the clubs, the club manager comes along in his car and asks them to move so he can park. Viv takes the two bags out the back while Emma moves the car but Alf’s putter falls out of the bag and Emma reverses over it. They head to the first hole, hoping Alf won’t notice. Grant takes his first shot and it goes some distance. Alf asks Emma for his club but she doesn’t know which one it is so he has to get it himself. Alf suggests Grant’s handicap is about twenty-three and says his is eighteen. Although Viv blows her nose as he’s about to play, Alf’s shot goes a fair distance. The group go to look for their balls but when Emma finds Alf’s she picks it up, costing him a penalty shot. Grant plays his ball and it lands on the green surrounding the hole. Alf goes to play his but Emma makes a loud noise moving the trolley as he does so, causing him to hit it only a short distance into some rough. Grant checks Alf’s handicap is eighteen and Alf says now it’s Emma.
In the caravan park grounds, Steven chats to Tom and Pippa about the touch football tournament and says the registration forms have to be in by Monday. He says Grant won’t be their coach and asks Tom to do it. Pippa is against the idea because of Tom’s health problems. Steven points out he’ll just be telling them what to do and Tom is keen. Pippa reluctantly agrees on condition Tom gives it up if she thinks it’s putting too much strain on him. Steven goes to see Matt and Adam at the surf club, saying it’s seven-a-side with three reserves and he’s already got half a team. When they hear Yabbie Creek are the reigning champions, they agree to sign up. Carly arrives and asks Adam for the $500 to pay Jeff. She tells him she can pay him back in two weeks but Adam isn’t convinced and neither is Steven. Carly offers Adam 10% of the profits and he agrees.
Alf has a series of poor shots in the golf match, ending up in garden areas, next to trees and in bunkers. By the time he finally manages to get the ball with Grant’s on the green, he’s two shots behind on the first hole. Grant gets his putter and attempts to pot the ball but hits it around the hole twice before getting it down, losing his two shot advantage. Alf takes his own putter and finds it’s broken in half. Bobby and Ailsa laugh when Grant, Emma and Viv fill them in on the story at the Diner but Alf is upset since the club belonged to his father and storms out. Steven, Adam and Matt arrive and tell Bobby they’ve got a team together. Bobby heads off to register them.
At the caravan park house, Pippa is unimpressed when Carly shows off her stock, pointing out people can buy them cheaper at the shops. Carly says Jeff told her they’ll pay more to be able to buy them in their own homes. Pippa isn’t convinced and asks if she got it in writing that Jeff would buy them back. Carly heads out to try some sales, determined to prove Pippa wrong. At the Stewart house, Alf continues to tear a strip off Emma for wrecking his father’s club. Emma storms out, saying she has to meet Tom for the touch football meeting. Ailsa thinks Alf is being unreasonable, since it was an accident and he’s acting as though it was deliberate. Alf accepts her point and Ailsa tells him he should apologise to Emma.
Tom briefs the team, including Steven, Matt, Adam, Emma, Viv and Errol, outside the caravan park house. They will have training on Tuesdays and Thursdays, six to eight, he’ll decide the positions after training and there’s to be no staying out late the night before the match. Matt asks if they’re allowed women and Tom tells him he’ll leave that to their discretion. Bobby arrives and tells them she wasn’t able to register, since they don’t have a home ground. Matt says they’ve got the playing field but Bobby says not any more: She’s spoken to his Uncle Rex and he told her the playing field has been sold off to developers and is going to be bulldozed for housing. Everyone is aghast at the news. Bobby tells them they’ve got a fight on their hands.
