Trouble brews between Adam and Paul. Sophie is influenced by an old beachcomber she meets while playing truant from school.
Extended Summary
As they make breakfast, Pippa, Carly and Steven try to cheer Sophie up; everyone else will forget about her stage fright before she does. They all have embarrassing stories to tell and Carly mentions the dress she wore to the ball to try and impress Andrew Foley. Sophie won’t be cheered and doesn’t want any breakfast.
Alf discusses the amateur night with Steven at the store and praises Paul’s talent. Sophie overhears and Alf tries to tell her most people wouldn’t have noticed anything. Steven tells Sophie that Alf’s right, but Sophie asks how come everyone keeps talking about it.
As they walk to school, Emma thinks Paul could be destined for Hollywood. Matt and Adam drive past and Adam mocks Paul but Emma tells him to ignore him. Some other girls pass and make fun of Sophie.
Grant comes to the house and asks Pippa how Sophie is. He feels bad for pushing her into performing and hopes she doesn’t cop a hard time from the other kids. Pippa tells him Sophie is tough and will be able to handle it. However, Sophie is wandering aimlessly along the beach.
Matt starts cleaning up the surf club while Adam complains about Emma and Paul. He blames Matt for trying to convince him with the romance stuff. Matt tells him to just face the fact it’s over but Adam says they’ll see.
Sophie comes across a shack with a “keep off” sign on it. An old man comes out with a metal detector and tells her to get off of his property but Sophie challenges him that it’s part of the beach; what’s he going to do if she doesn’t?
Pippa and Carly are discussing wedding arrangements. Carly fancies a croquembouche for the cake but Pippa hopes she doesn’t expect her to make one! Ben wants a traditional wedding cake but Carly thinks they’re boring.
The old man is using his metal detector on the beach and tells Sophie if he wanted company he wouldn’t live in a deserted beach shack. He asks why she’s not at school and she makes up a story about not having the money for a school trip but the man doesn’t believe her. The detector goes off and the man tells Sophie to dig.
Matt has helped Adam fix a ding in his surfboard that he doesn’t think was there this morning. Paul comes in and Adam asks if he touched his board; if he knocks off someone else’s chick he could do anything. Paul says Emma doesn’t belong to Adam or anyone else. Adam says that’s where Paul is wrong… Emma belongs to him. Paul says he should let Emma make up her own mind who she goes out with. Adam asks if Paul can’t see Emma is only trying to get to him.
Ben and Carly are putting wedding cake ingredients in the fridge in the evening and Ben gets landed with helping tomorrow since he has the day off. Pippa goes upstairs to see how Sophie is and tells her how bad Grant feels. Sophie lies, claiming a few kids gave her a hard time at school but she told them to get lost.
Ben returns to the house in the morning and has to make his own breakfast because Carly is starting the cake. Pippa asks where Sophie is, and Carly says she’s already left. Sophie shows up at the shack again and admits she is wagging school. The old man tells her to dump her stuff inside and grab herself a mug.
Alf gives Paul a drink on the house at the store and praises his performance. He tells him there is still a job here if he wants to try and save for a piano again. Paul goes to the surf club to practise and Adam taunts him again. Paul tries to diffuse things and says he understands how Adam feels but Adam wants to fight. Paul refuses and Adam calls him gutless.
Sophie questions the man about his most valuable finds with the metal detector and he suggests it’s time for her to go home. Sophie goes to the surf club where Steven is advising Paul to just stay out of Adam’s way but Paul thinks he can handle him. Sophie and Steven walk home together… where the old man has just returned Dag Dog after finding him on the beach! Steven knows him as Gus, and he says hello to Sophie. Pippa asks if they know each other and Gus says better by the minute it would seem!
