Justine comes home to fight the manslaughter charges. Joel finds out that Jesse is dating Gypsy. Byron is baptized in a way that makes both Marilyn and Fisher happy.
Extended Summary
Natalie and Rebecca persuade Joel to wait a little while longer before he reports Justine as being missing to the police. Justine asks Tom if he thinks she’s doing the right thing by running away. Tom says that he would not that he’d stay and fight it. Justine decides to return to Summer Bay and fight the manslaughter charges. Meanwhile, Mr Collins convinces Mrs Collins that Justine should take the blame for the baby’s death because she’ll only be punished as a minor. Both of them, on the other hand, could end up destroyed. He says he’s sorry for what he did but they must get on with the rest of their lives. Tom and Justine return home seconds before Joel is ready to call the police. Joel has a go at Justine, asking if she realised that running away like that could have meant that the bail money was forfeited. Joel also criticises Tom for being irresponsible. Driving unlicensed on a motorbike. Joel and Tom talk concerning the bike, and Joel says that they have to sell it. Tom then tells Joel that someone had to do something for Justine and that everyone was treating her like she was guilty. Meanwhile, Justine sees the Collinses near the beach. Mrs Collins goes to talk to her but Mr Collins pulls his wife away. Justine tells Tom what happened he says again that he believes she’s innocent. Justine says that Tom’s the best friend she has at present.
Jesse tells Tom that he can’t keep the bike at his house. Gypsy continues to delay telling her parents about her relationship with Jesse. Jesse asks whether Gypsy sees him as a fling, rather than something serious. Gypsy says no. Later, Joel stops by Jesse’s place. At crossed purposes with Joel, Jesse admits to his relationship with Gypsy. Joel is shocked because he had come to chastise Jesse for helping Tom hide the motorbike. Up to that point, Joel knew nothing of Jesse’s relationship with his daughter.
Alf gives Fisher a little advice, saying that it is much more important that the child is brought up with solid values, rather than sprinkling a little holy water on its head. At church, Marilyn prays to God for a sign to help her reach a decision about Byron’s baptism. Marilyn has a chat with Rebecca about the baptism. Rebecca does not want to cause friction with Marilyn and Fisher. She thinks that raising Byron in a loving family should be Marilyn’s priority. Later, Fisher repeats what Alf has said about baptism to Marilyn? When Byron is old enough, he can choose the religion that he wishes to follow. This agrees with Rebecca’s thoughts. Marilyn takes this as a sign and agrees with Fisher to raise their son with a combination of both parents’ religious values. At the beach, Marilyn sprinkles some Summer Bay seawater on Byron’s forehead, and Marilyn and Fisher make their promises to their son.
Paula, the lawyer, convinces Alf that they should take the settlement and that it’s the best option for Duncan. Duncan is overjoyed when he hears about the settlement money. However, his hopes of computer games and the like are quickly dashed after Alf relates that the money is going to be put in trust for his education. Duncan isn’t impressed.
