Extended Summary
Flynn is leaning on the fence by the beach, looking upset. As we follow his eyes, the scene pans out to another desolate figure in the distance. Kane is standing in the shallows of the water, looking oh-so manly, hands stuffed in pockects, with his eyes on the water. Kirsty approaches from behind (oi no jokes in the back, this is a serious scene!) nervously calling “hello”. He turns his face with a pained expression, and starts to walk away. She comes into the surf mindless of her shoes getting wet, telling him how much she’s missed him. He doesn’t seem angry so much as unable to even begin to deal with her, and shakes his head as she talks, holding up his hands to ward her off. She swears to him that she’ll spend the rest of her life making this up to him, and begs him to listen because they’re having a baby and he can’t walk away. She throws her arms around him and clings to him desperately. He pries her hands off and pushes her away. Holding her at arms-length, he says raggedly “I may be able to forgive you. But I don’t think I can be with you”. He dives into the surf, leaving Kirsty in tears.
Rhys and Beth are at the van-house going over bills, as a zombie-like Kirsty walks in, dishevelled and her school-uniform wet. She tells them she went to see Kane, and he says he can forgive her. Beth is happy to hear that, until Kirsty continues “but he doesn’t want to be with me”. Beth tries to comfort her, but Kirsty asks her not to be nice, because she doesn’t deserve it. Beth doesn’t want to hear her say that. Rhys tells Kirsty that he doesn’t want to see her unhappy and went to see Kane yesterday. “And?” Kirsty says hopefully. Rhys admits that Kane is thinking of leaving town. “He’ll never come back”, Kirsty says numbly. Jade enters to room, and Rhys and Beth discreetly leave the twins alone. Jade wordlessly hugs Kirsty, who begins to cry.
Dani and Irene are at Uni discussing a course-book. Dani digs through her bag to show Irene some notes and find some a letter from Damian which contains info about the protest. Irene wonders where “Comrade Felix” fits into this.
Jesse is at the diner, and Leah comes out to chat to him. He is unresponsive though, and Leah exasperatedly tells him that the name-slip didn’t mean anything and she and Flynn are good friends. But Jesse tells her he sees how she smiles when she talks about Flynn and can’t remember the last time she treated him that way.
Beth and Jade are in the kitchen, and Jade offers to organise Robbie’s 17th birthday party. Beth isn’t sure he’ll be getting one, as he knew he was grounded when he took part in the lock-in. Jade tries to change her mind. Rhys says they are proud of Jade for sticking up for her principles. “Yeh I’m a regular hero”, Jade says sarcastically. Wow, she took the words and tone of voice right out of my mouth. Rhys suggests they go to the Yabbie Creek school and check it out, but Jade isn’t interested in going there and no longer plans to sit her HSC’s.
Leah is at the Diner, muttering about “one little mistake”. She asks Alf if someone can be in love with two people at the same time, but that sounds to him like trying to have it both ways.
Flynn is in the surgery, and looks at some coupley photos of him and Sally. He dials a number, presumably Sally’s, but doesn’t get through. He then calls Leah. She’s happy to hear from him, but can’t talk for long as she’s got customers waiting. He called to talk about “our baby”. Ech, so wrong.
Scott and Dani talk about the article she’s writing about the student protests. An excited Hayley walks in, to thank them for entering her in the art competition, because she’s one of the finalists and the winner gets a year-long scholarship to Paris. Hayley is wearing the greatest shirt. White button-down, with blue, green, and yellow (my fave colour combo) flower print. Ooh I want one. Fab earrings as well, hoops with heaps of dangly blue beads. Hayley’s upcoming 21st birthday is mentioned and Hayley says not to remind her as 21 is so old. “So old” Scott and I repeat in sarcastic unison.
Colleen is at the surgery having yet another problem with the computer. Leah comes in and presses the correct button, then goes in to see Flynn. He’s pleasantly suprised to see her. She admits to him that Jesse is upset with her because she accidently said Flynn’s name while speaking to him (she neglects to tell him that she way saying “I love you” at the time!). Flynn is sympathetic, and Leah says sometimes he’s the only one who understands her. Flynn takes her hand and confirms they’re good mates. Leah is affected and hurriedly leaves to pick up VJ.
Jesse is at the Diner, and is not pleased when Alf’s offers him some cautionary advice about looking at other women, using menu and diet analogies. Jesse sets him straight saying “just so you know, Leah’s the one who’s been looking at the menu”, before stalking off, leaving Alf to pick his jaw up off the floor.
Dani in on the beach after a swim, wearing the grossest black cutaway swimsuit. Kane greets her as she towels off. He asks how Kirsty is and she says he’d know better than she would. Does she speak to her family at all? Kane thinks this must be just what they’ve wanted; he and Kirsty are all messed up now, and Kirsty can move back in with them to have the baby, while he’s out of town and sending money. Dani asks him if that’s how he wants to raise his child, and he admits it not. Dani never thought she’d be saying this, but he is part of the family now. She tells him that Kirsty needs him and not to walk away from her.
Dani, Scott, Noah, and Hayley are sitting around the table, talking about Dani’s article. Noah cautions that this might make trouble for her from the Felix camp. Hayley informs them she spoke to the Uni secretary, and she needn’t wait till June to go back to Uni and can go back straight away, attributing the decision to her boost from the art competition and their support.
Kirsty is at the Sutherland’s, and isn’t sure about staying for dinner, but they talk her into it. Beth and Jade leave Rhys and Kirsty to talk. He takes some of the blame for the situation, for not supporting her, but she insists it’s not his fault. He says trust can be a hard thing to get back, using him and Shelley as an example. He assures his daughter he loves her, and she reciprocates, saying she meant everything she said in the mine-shaft (yay, I love it when past events are referenced). She tells him it means alot that he went to see Kane, and he’s sorry that he couldn’t make him listen. Kirsty says “I don’t know how I’m going to live if I’ve lost him”, but Rhys assures her she hasn’t, and Kane just needs some time.
It’s a beautiful dusk evening, and Kane’s on the beach sitting at the water’s edge deep in thought. A good song for the mood starts to play in the background (any readers know the name?), and the scene segues into Flynn looking troubled at the surgery, and Jesse at the Diner, before coming back to Kane, who slowly traces a ‘K’ in the sand with a stick before walking away.
Kirsty arrives back at the Beach House. Irene asks if things are back on track with her family and Kirsty thinks so. She asks “did he call?” Irene says no, and Kirsty looks even more dejected. “But you do have a visitor”, Irene smiles at her, nodding towards their bedroom door. Kirsty slowly walks in, and Kane is sitting on the bed. He hears her come in, and gets up greeting her “hey Kirst”. They both start to speak at the same time, and she says “sorry you go first”. He tells her he’s been thinking about everything they’ve gone through together, and he doesn’t want to lose that. He wants to be a family, but she has to tell him everything from now on. No more secrets. She promises, and closes her eyes in relief as they hug.
Flynn turns up on Leah’s doorstep. Jesse’s at the gym, and he tells her he needs to talk. He tells her about Sally taking the morphine, and Leah advises them to talk to Sally about it. Leah is upset at the though that the surrogacy has caused these problems, and Flynn tries to comfort her. They stare into eachother’s eyes, as Jesse walks in. Flynn tries to greet him casually, but Jesse walks out again, saying he knows exactly what was just happening.
