NURSE RYAN (BRONWEN GAULT)
Tenth appearance, last in Episode #3725. Witnessed Kane’s emotional outburst at Flynn after Kirsty’s rescue from the bush.
Extended Summary
BUSH
Kane and Tasha are still searching the bush, yelling out for Kirsty, when Tasha spots her lying on the ground, shaking. Kane races over to her, propping her up against him, reassuring her that he is there, and that everything will be ok. Kirsty breathlessly and tearily tells him that she’s lost the baby, before collapsing into his arms in floods of tears.
FLYNN’S PLACE
Flynn comes off the phone, and when Sally arrives home he explains that there’s no news on Kirsty, but her blood pressure was through the roof before she left. Sally wonders why Kirsty chose to run, and Flynn admits that Kirsty had a decision she had to make that she was probably trying to run away from – the decision between her life and that of her child. Flynn answers the phone to Kane, who has chosen to phone the local GP as opposed to an ambulance for Kirsty. After hearing the latest, Flynn assures him that he’ll bring an ambulance. He hangs up, informs Sally that Kirsty’s choice has been made for her, and departs.
BUSH
Kane is trying to get Kirsty back to the car/road, supporting her as she clings onto him, her words almost incoherent. She is distraught about losing the baby and terrified of going back onto dialysis. All Kane can do is reassure her, telling her to concentrate on getting better, and assuring her that he will be by her side all of the way – she just has to trust in he and Flynn. Kirsty, still muttering “the baby… Kane, the baby”, finally collapses and as Kane leans over her body, Tasha (evidently naive as ever) asks if she is alright. Kane is practically in tears as the ambulance approaches and he begs Kirsty to keep going
CARAVAN PARK
Robbie is sat in silent misery, and is refusing to talk to Beth about it. They still haven’t heard about Kirsty, and Rhys is still out with the SES. Robbie announces that he’s a “walking disaster”, but Beth refuses to listen – he’s just going through a rough patch with Tasha. Robbie’s point that “everything he touches is a disaster” is provedn when he bites into an apple to find a worm. Beth tells him that he must go back to school and face Tasha, and he says he will – just as soon as he has invented a machine to mend broken hearts.
HOSPITAL
Kirsty is finally back in hospital, and Flynn has to peel Kane off her, wanting some space. All Kirsty can think about is the baby, and Flynn informs her that the miscarriage was her body’s way of protecting itself. When she comments she ran because she couldn’t decide and that Flynn ‘got what he wanted’, Kane demands to know what she’s talking about, and eventually Flynn agrees to step outside for a word with him.
Outside Kirsty’s room, Flynn asks that Kane put Kirsty first, to which he responds that he always does. Flynn admits that when Kirsty ran away, she was running away from a decision that Flynn thought she was strong enough to face. He explains what he told Kirsty – her best option was a termination – and Kane is angry that he laid that on her. Flynn insists that Kirsty wanted to know the truth, and that he didn’t make allowances for her response. Kane is incensed, and Flynn finds himself pushed roughly up against the wall, Kane grabbing his shirt in a rage, furious that he’s had his baby die, and that his wife could’ve died. Flynn eventually manages to shove him away, threatening him with security, and insisting that he get a grip – he’s in a hospital, and he needs to relax. Kane glares at him before walking away.
HOSPITAL
Kirsty looks to be asleep and back on dialysis. Kane is by her bedside when Beth arrives, commenting that Kirsty looks far too young for everything she’s going through. Kane mentions how he lost it with Flynn, and Beth has heard. Kane wants to apologise later, and Beth tells him that Flynn understands. Kane looks at Kirsty, commenting that he should have known something like this would happen – they were so happy, and he had everything. Beth suggests that he still does – even though losing a baby is a terrible thing, if it means that Kirsty gets well and they have a life and other kids, then maybe there was a reason for it. kane wishes that he could believe it, and she assures him it might make tyhings easier if her does. Kane is still dwelling on how much they wanted the baby, and how much he wanted to be “the best Dad in the world”. He’s almost in tears.
WHARF
Scott, who is still wearing the same shirt that he has worn for the past two episodes, sympathises with Kane and Kirsty, knowing how much they wanted their baby, and he and Dani talk of Rhys and Shelley heading back to the Bay. Dani grins and delivers some better news – she has spoken to the Dean, and her suspension from Uni has been lifted. She’s also happy that she hasn’t heard from Felix for ages, but Scott soon dampens her mood with the announcement that after she left the kiosk that morning, 100 boxes of coffee paper arrived. Dani once again raises the issue of a double wedding, and it seems she has been giving it lots of thought. She reckons it’d be good for Kirsty to have something to loook forward to – being a bridesmaid – when she gets out of hospital. Scott points out that making Kirsty happy isn’t a reason to get married, but as she reckons that they’ll do it they’ll do it sooner or later. He rather unenthusiastically agrees that it would be great, but the look on his face when Dani hugs him happily says otherwise.
BREAK
DINER
Val makes another appearance as Noah talks to her about the trauma of wedding arrangements – he wishes that it was all over already. Colleen drifts away into the kitchen, fantasising about weddings and the like, and Noah is relieved that she didn’t broach the topic of a double wedding with she and Norman again. He leaves, and Alf asks Val how the caravan is going. It’s fine, but Val has found some bits and pieces – including what looks like some skimpy piece of decorative underwear, and a baby suit. Alf lies that he let the van to some friends – a young married couple… with a baby. He suggests that he and Val have dinner that night – not a date, but so that she can meet Duncan. He thinks a womans influence may do the world of good, and as soon as Val comments that she’s flattered, Alf takes it as acceptance of the offer. As val leaves Colleen walks through, having been listening from the kitchen. She is mosyt displeased that Alf is choosing Val when he could have had Maureen, but Alf reminds Colleen that Maureen left him, and that he’s a free agent and can therefore have any friendships that he wants. Colleen looks somewhat disgruntled.
HOSPITAL
Dani is now by Kirsty’s bedside, telling her about the wedding arrangements, as Kane stands to the side. She tells Kirsty she has to be ready for the wedding, as she wants all of her sisters as bridesmaids – just like they planned – and she wants the whole family there. Kane and Kirsty look pretty downhearted, and Kirsty tells Dani that she’s lucky that she gets to do everything properly. After a moment, after it registers that Kane is in the room and she’s slagging off their wedding and Dani has glanced awkwardly across at Kane, she insists that it doesn’t matter. Dani is quick to back up that it’s the committment to the person that you love that’s the main thing – the rest is just “trimmings”. Dani leaves, urging Kirsty to get better as she has a “wedding to go to”. As she leaves, Kane sits down beside the bed to apologise for their “no frills wedding”. She rejects the criticism – the dress was beautiful, and he looked so happy – but he is quick to point out that they’ll always wonder how things could have been. She tells him that she loves him, and that they’re married – that’s enough for her – and he responds that they’re going to live “happily ever after”, as if Summer Bay is your average Australian town. They kiss.
SCHOOL
Noah asks acting-head Sally if she’s considering making any changes now that Hyde is off the scene for a while, and she admits that she has thought of taking things back to the way they were. Robbie rushes past, out of uniform, and Sally proves just how different she is to Hyde when all she can do is shout after him that he’s a bit late. He leaps over a table, going up to Tasha before proceeding to kiss her passionately. He then tells her that her resignation as his girlfriend is not accepted. The rest of the school cheers them on as they kiss again. All Sally can do is grin along with the crowds. Oh, if only Hyde was there.
CARAVAN PARK
Robbie dances into the caravan park to sweep Beth off her feet, who protests at the mess he is making of the sheet she was trying to fold. She is, however, amused at his “change for the better”, and wants to know what is going on. He garbles on about true happiness – if there’s such a thing – before explaining that after she left for the hospital, he resolved not to give up on Tasha without a fight, and now everything’s ok again.
BEACH HOUSE
Kane returns home to find Tasha in a quandry over love, and what is going on between she and Robbie. She asks for Kane’s advice, telling him about the kiss. She broke up with him because she thought it was right, but when he kissed her it made her feel “all funny again”, and she realised that she was wrong. Kane informs her that you can’t simply turn your feelings on and off, but Tasha doesn’t understand, and also doesn’t get what Robbie said – that he didn’t accept her resignation as girlfriend. Kane explains that Robbie probably knows his feelings are real, and thinks hers are to and therefore doeesn’t want to let her go. “Like you and Kirsty?”. “Yeah maybe”. Kane tells her that he’s going for a shower before heading back to the hospital, and she decides to go with him. I assume that she means to the hospital, as opposed to into the shower.
THE PALACE
Noah finds Dani trying to pick bridesmaids – Jade definetely and perhaps Kit as well – and pulls Scott aside, wondering what is going on. Scott explains that it ‘just got away from him’, and that he’s just waiting for the right moment to tell Dani how he’s feeling, but Noah is incredulous – when will there be a right moment?
HOSPITAL
Flynn tells Kirsty that her blood pressure still isn’t going down, and she can’t understand – he told her that without the baby it would. He explains that her last blood profiles (?) weren’t good, and they’ll have to increase her dialysis time. Kirsty rejects the idea, not wanting to be hooked up to that machine ‘for the rest of her life’, and Flynn stressed the importance of finding a donor so she won’t have to. Kane and Tasha walk in to interrupt. Kane pulls Flynn outside for a word, leaving Tasha with Kirsty. Flynn informs him that Kirsty needs a transplant “sooner rather than later”, and after a silence Kane plucks up an apology for his earlier fit of rage. Flynn understands how things got out of hand, but – always a counsellor at heart – tells him violence isn’t the answer, especially when there’s a girl who has just lost a baby. Kane returns to Kirsty’s room, where she seems to be asleep again. He stands in the doorframe, soft music playing as he and Tasha stand in silence.
CARAVAN PARK
Scott is slightly taken aback at Robbie’s raptuous greeting as he arrives at the house, and as Robbie leaves Beth reassurees Scott that “it’s not catching”. Scott has bigger things to worry about though – he informs Beth that he is in big trouble, and he doesn’t know how he’s going to get out of it.
Beth is unable to offer Scott any advice, and Scott understands that everyone just assumes that they would want to marry – why shouldn’t they? It isn’t to do with his Dad, but he just doesn’t want to “do the traditional thing” – and that includes a house in the surburbs and a traditional job. He doesn’t want to go back to the land either, and he can’t work out what exactly he does want – only that it’s not to get married and he’s being pushed into it. He knows he wants Dani, but that’s about it. Beth points out that he’s not making any sense – and before he does anything else he has to figure things out. If it means as much to Dani as Scott says it does, then Scott is in danger of losing her…
