Extended Summary
Martha’s head is in a spin in the wake of her light-hearted prank going so wrong. Meanwhile, Jack has a million questions about his hearing, but Flynn can’t answer them until the swelling goes down. Once Flynn goes, Tony turns to Jack, trying to stay positive but Jack is clearly distressed.
Lucas rushes in to the surf club, breathless, but Matilda’s gone! At home, Matilda’s deflated and humiliated, as she skulks in the kitchen. Luc appears at the door and is about to explain when Matilda cuts over him, saying she’s been treated badly by guys in the past and has no intention of putting herself through that again. Feeling bad, Lucas heads off, leaving Mattie crushed.
Jack points out to Tony that police officers can’t be on active duty with their hearing impaired. He thinks he might as well kiss this posting goodbye. Meanwhile, a guilty Martha has filled Tasha in on the entire story. She feels dreadful and it becomes clear that she’s got feelings for Jack.
In the diner, Hyde tries to repair his relationship with Kim, but Kim explains that every time he looks at his dad, all he can think about is what happened to his mum. He moves off, leaving Hyde saddened.
At the hospital, Martha confesses to Jack she needs to tell him something. Jack wryly suggests she talk into his good ear. Martha’s confused until he explains what’s happened. Feeling utterly cretinous, Martha’s speechless. She makes her excuses and leaves as Lucas comes back in. He forgot to tell Jack that he found the “spider” that freaked him out – it was plastic! The realisation hits Jack – it was Martha! In the next ward, Kim visits Hayley. Seeing his misery, she offers that it would be a shame if all that resulted from Kim’s search was a damaged relationship with his dad! With food for thought, Kim tracks down Hyde and offers him a drink. It’s a tentative step to rebuild things, but the gesture speaks volumes to Hyde.
Matilda apologises to Luc profusely for how she treated him this morning… But Lucas is cool with her: That’s fine. Forget it, I have. Doesn’t matter. His constant agreeing brick-walls Matilda as it sounds like she means absolutely nothing to him. He heads off and Matilda is left feeling awful.
Despite his earlier bravado, Luc mooches towards the house. Then he spies a note on the doorstep with his name on it. He opens it and reads it – it’s a clue to the next note, which is another clue. What is this about?! He follows the clues and finds a letter…from Matilda. It’s a heartfelt apology and an invitation to watch ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ with her that afternoon…
Jack’s quietly brooding when Martha comes in. Before Martha’s heart sinks and she apologises profusely but Jack tells her to save it and shows her the plastic spider. Jack launches in to a scathing attack, barking at Martha that his whole career could be on the line because of her! He tells her to GO! Shaken, Martha moves out, tears in her eyes…
Meanwhile, Matilda turns to see Lucas standing in the doorway, a bag of popcorn in his hand. They share a tentative, warm smile. Matilda starts the DVD and they sit on the lounge too (each in the very corner of the opposite ends – awkward, nervous). After a moment, Matilda steels a glance to Lucas as he hesitantly reaches across and takes Matilda’s hand. Ah!
Meanwhile, Kim fills Hayley in on his drink with Hyde – It was a start. Hayley’s pleased – it’s time for a complication-free life for a change! THROW TO: A car pulls up in the Bay – it’s Kit – Kim’s ex!
