Extended Summary
Martha’s enjoyed the power of having a gun in her hands. The shooting instructor comes up and she asks him how she goes about getting her own pistol? The instructor tells her she’ll need to go to the local cop shop and pick up a license application. Meanwhile, Sally and Flynn are at home, getting ready for races. Sally moves off and Flynn goes to tuck in his shirt. As he does, he feels something. He walks over to the mirror and lifts his shirt – on his side is a new lump – a stark reminder the cancer’s growing and his time’s coming to an end.
Leah and Dan prepare for their day at the races, but Dan’s distracted. He heads for the door, saying that he is just nipping to the bank. Leah reminds him to be conservative – they are saving, after all. Meanwhile, at the cop shop, Martha’s relieved when it appears that Jack is no where to be found. However, as Const Rice moves off to get the license application, Jack returns. Martha almost succeeds in pulling the wool over his eyes, but just as Jack is about to move off, Rice returns with forms – for a pistol license. Shocked, Jack can’t believe Martha’s thinking about getting a gun! Martha doesn’t see what the problem is but Jack thinks this is taking things too far.
At the races, Sally fills up everyone’s glasses. Flynn refuses another beer – he’s not feeling too well, at all, but when Sally calls him on it and suggests they leave early – he snaps out of it. Colleen’s all of a flutter… The big race is starting soon. Everyone starts discussing which horses they are going to bet on, but Dan keeps himself separate– taking all of this in… Meanwhile, Jack’s been on a bit of a losing streak, but Martha reckons she’s got the golden touch when it comes to picking a winner! As Martha places another bet, she has a seemingly friendly argument with a disgruntled punter over his bad pick. Martha’s really having a good time – and Jack’s pleased to see it. Leah, Sally and Flynn have all had small wins and the excitement shows on their faces ($2 each way for most of them!). Flynn’s gives Dan a jibe about not putting a bet on but Dan laughs along (covering his overwhelming desire to gamble). Hesitant, he struggles with his internal demons. Finally he caves, approaches the Bookie and puts on a $1000 bet – his heart pounding.
There is no going back now! Excitement builds as the race begins… There’s lots of chanting and screaming from the crowd as they enjoy the entertainment of it all. But for Dan it’s a completely different game. His hands clenched with tension – the anticipation almost too much to bear. Then, Colleen’s tip wins by a head and everyone jumps up and down with excitement. But their excitement is nothing compared to the adrenalin rush Dan’s experiencing – he remembers this feeling – and it’s great! Leah’s shocked when Dan reveals that he put $1000 on. Furious, she struggles to compute her Dan put all their savings on one horse, but Dan sweeps her up in his arms and tells her that now they don’t have to wait – they can afford another round of IVF straight away. Leah wants that more than anything and can’t stay mad at him, as the excitement hits her too – she may have a child sooner than she thought! Meanwhile, Martha heads off the ladies and is mugged by the disgruntled punter from earlier. Panicked, she slumps down feeling defeated.
Back at the rifle range, a dodgy guy offers Martha a black market gun. Martha comes into the apartment – and calls out to see if anyone is home. The place is empty and Martha pulls out a pistol! Later, Martha hears someone at the front door. The lock starts rattling and it sounds like someone is trying to force their way inside (just like in her Corey dream). Martha starts to panic and holds the gun up to door, her hand shaking – poised to shoot…
