Extended Summary
Kim is reeling from the shocking discovery he is unable to have children. Rachel arrives home and notices Kim’s lost in his own world but when she questions him on it, he darts off with no explanation – leaving Rachel bemused by Kim’s withdrawn behaviour. Kim walks along the beach, trying to clear his head but when he notices Leah and VJ playing together – it is a harsh reminder of what he will now never experience. Kim moves off, knowing he must make one of the biggest decisions of his life.
Back at home, Kim brusquely tells Rachel he has given the idea of children some more thought and he’s reached the conclusion that he doesn’t want to have kids. Furthermore, considering they both want different things in life – perhaps they should just call it quits. Rachel is absolutely shocked and can’t make sense of why Kim would say such a thing so out of the blue. Brad arrives as Kim moves off, leaving an absolutely devastated Rachel in his wake. But little does Rachel know the suffering Kim has endured to make this sacrifice. Rachel is pouring her heart out to Brad, still in shock that Kim could be so cruel. Brad suggests there must be more behind Kim’s change of heart but Rachel is convinced he’s a selfish jerk who doesn’t know what real commitment is…if only she knew!
Meanwhile, Kim is confiding in Jack. Jack’s heart goes out to his mate, as Kim fills him in on his devastating news. Jack questions if Kim is ready to throw away everything with Rachel, given she doesn’t even know the truth. Kim begins to wonder if perhaps he has made a big mistake. Kim heads home determined to tell Rachel the full story but as far as Rachel’s concerned, he’s made it clear what he wants. Kim cuts in and insists he hasn’t been honest and there’s something important he has to tell her….but how will Rachel cope with the truth?
Jack is experiencing relationship problems of his own. Following his trial separation with Martha, Jack is at the Surf Club drinking himself stupid – much to the concern of Robbie and Tony. Jack continues to flirt with Fitzgerald’s friends but it’s all bravado. Meanwhile, Alf and Tasha are doing their best to revive Martha’s spirits and suggest she and Jack have some counseling. Martha is at a loss and convinced that only time can heal their wounds. The hours tick by and everyone heads off to bed. Suddenly, there’s a loud knock on the door and Alf opens it to find one very drunk Jack yelling out how much he loves Martha. Alf sends him packing and orders him to go home and sober up. But unbeknownst to the guys, Martha has witnessed the whole exchange and she is clearly disappointed in Jack’s behaviour!
The next morning, Martha approaches Jack, who has just emerged from the surf. Having just had a heartfelt conversation with Tony, Martha is determined to initiate peace talks with Jack. But in no time, the conversation turns into an argument and any chance of reconciliation has diminished. Back in the Diner, Martha is venting to Robbie and Tasha about her earlier encounter with Jack but once Martha heads off, Robbie and Tasha talk of their predicament of having feuding godparents at the Christening tomorrow. They are oblivious to the fact Alf has heard their every word.
Alf later approaches Martha and insists she and Jack need to put aside their problems for the sake of Robbie, Tasha and especially little Ella. Martha is given food for thought and later confronts Jack. With Alf’s wise words in mind, Martha apologises for her earlier outburst and insists they put aside their differences. Jack agrees to call it a truce and Martha heads off. Jack looks wistfully at his wedding ring – where did their marriage go so wrong?
