Extended Summary
Rachel wakes to find herself in Hugh’s bed. They’ve made love together. Rachel’s devastated by her betrayal of Kim. She can’t face him when she gets home and heads straight for bed. The next morning she again sidesteps Kim as she needs to be at work. But the Hospital provides no haven for her as Hugh is also working. Hugh wants to chat about where they are at, but Rachel won’t do it while she’s working. They arrange to meet at Hugh’s apartment after work. Once alone, Hugh tells Rachel how much he loves her and that he believes he can give her everything she wants: love, security and a family. He wants to be with her forever. Rachel doesn’t deny that she cares about him but she needs time to sort herself out. She returns later to say that she’s made up her mind… she’s decided to stay with Kim. He’s her husband and she going to try to make their marriage work. Hugh’s devastated and we’ve left unsure if Rachel has really made the decision she really wants to make.
Kim has his own problems. Since Matilda told him that Kit was in love with him, and that she believed Kim felt the same way about her, Kim has been trying to avoid Kit. But today they are both scheduled to take Archie to the Clinic for one of his regular check ups. Kim flirts with not going but eventually turns up. With nowhere to hide, Kit and Kim are forced to talk. Kit’s upset that Matilda interfered in her life by telling Kim how she felt but she confirms to Kim that’s it’s the truth and she’s sick of hiding from the fact that she loves him. Kim admits to having confused feelings for her too but Kit, seeing that he’s not sure what he really feels, tells him, despite her own longings, to stay with Rachel. It seems like Kit’s plan to move to the city with Archie is now a certainty. It’s time for her to forget the “fairy tale romance with Prince Kim” and move on with her life.
Lucas is still giving his dad, Tony, a hard time and it’s starting to annoy his best mate, Ric. Tony recently bought Alf’s old wooden dingy with the intention of restoring it with Lucas’ help, and using that as a re-bonding exercise. But Lucas continues to scoff at the plan. Ric, who has no trouble understanding what Tony’s going through and sees how hard he is trying to reconnect with Lucas, eventually tires of Lucas’ attitude and gives him a serve. He spells out how hard Tony has taken Beth’s death and how hurt he must be to feel he’s losing Lucas too. Ric’s probably the only person who could say that to Lucas and it makes Lucas take stock. Eventually he turns up at the boat and offers his help. Tony’s delighted and, just maybe, the healing process between father and son has taken a major step forward.
