Extended Summary
Dan and Leah are luxuriating in not having to share their home with Jazz and are concentrating on trying to motivate Drew into getting a job. He’s more intent on surfing. Just as they attempt to put some serious pressure on him, Jazz hits town again. She isn’t especially welcome anywhere and Drew and Cassie, in particular, give her a tough time. Cassie even “accidentally” spills a drink on her which sees Jazz give the kids a lecture on manners that takes them all by surprise and makes them feel bad.
Even though she is aware that Leah isn’t one of her fans Jazz moves straight back into Leah’s house and even starts flirting with Dan. What really annoys Leah and Dan most though is when Jazz writes a cheque to bail out Drew and cover the cost of repairing a hole he made in the felt on the pool table. She’s not even concerned that he took off without even owning up.
The household stresses come to a head at a family meeting where Jazz declares that Drew has earned a gap year and shouldn’t be forced into a dead end job. It all becomes too much for Leah who says her piece and eventually sends Jazz packing.
Rachel is coming to terms with life without Kim and gets a lot of support from Leah. While she’s finding it difficult adapting to being on her own, and is still hurt and angry about Kim leaving her for Kit, Rachel also can’t forget that she let Hugh go. A chance moment sees her grab the opportunity to find out Hugh’s address and she writes him a letter. She has much deliberation about whether to post the letter or not and eventually decided not to send it.
Alf is struggling to deal with the realities of growing old. While his mind believes he’s still a young man his body is telling him otherwise and it’s increasingly frustrating him. Alf finds that he has less patience with the local youngsters and he doesn’t like the short tempered way he’s behaving around them. While his friends reassure him he’ll bounce back after he has his cataracts removed and can start driving again – Alf isn’t so sure.
