Extended Summary
The sheepish boys – Ric and Drew – have been dropped home by Fitzgerald who tells an unimpressed Dan and Alf that they were picked up at drag race. Ric and Drew swear they weren’t racing, and Fitzy warns them against any further involvement in the scene. …
The next morning a very nervous Matilda prepares for today’s HSC trial exam – it’s Maths, the one exam Matilda’s completely confident about blitzing. But her last-minute preparations scuttled when Emma shows up on her doorstep with big, unhappy news – she thinks she might be pregnant, to Reuben’s mate Bondy! Matilda does her best to calm Emma, but a pregnancy test only confirms Emma’s fear. Leaving the test in the kitchen bin, Matilda and Emma head to school – little realising that Ric has discovered the positive test and is jumping to a startling conclusion: Matilda’s pregnant?!
Meanwhile, Matilda tries to persuade Emma to tell Dan that she can’t sit the exam, but Emma’s scared of doing anything that might mean her mum finding out about the pregnancy. Instead, she sits the exam – but halfway through, Matilda realises that Emma hasn’t written a single word. Not stopping to think, Mattie swaps Emma’s paper for her completed paper. She then quickly finishes Emma’s paper, hoping that a sharp-eyed Fisher hasn’t noticed…
Drew’s got his own worries. Dom took off from last night’s drag race in his car, and he’s desperate to get it back. To his relief Dom finally shows up with the Beast, coolly telling Drew that he did him a favour taking the car – if the cops had got their hands on it, they would have impounded it. As they talk, a hotted-up car cruises past, the driver – Denni – slowing to take a good luck at Drew. Dom explains that he’s being “buzzed” – Denni’s checking out the Beast because he wants to challenge Drew to a drag. Ric warns Drew not to get involved – advice that only seems smarter when they learn that Drew’s ex, Lisa, is now Denni’s girlfriend. Lisa hates Drew for dropping her to go back to Belle – and she’s clearly encouraging Denni to make trouble for Drew.
More trouble when Matilda admits to Ric that she cheated on the exam to help Emma. Ric’s worried – but he’s more worried about the fact they’re going to have a baby! Mattie is stunned to realise what he was thinking, is and quick to assure him that it’s Emma who’s got the problem, not her. Ric accompanies her back to school to pick up some books – where they cross with Fisher, who grimly fronts Matilda: “Miss Hunter, you need to accompany me to the principal’s office regarding your exam paper.’ Poor Mattie’s gutted – she’s been sprung for cheating.
