Extended Summary
Just as Rachel had gathered up enough strength to tell Brad that Henk had forced himself on her several years ago and that she doesn’t want him to come to the Bay to be for Brad’s best man, Brad and Henk turn up on her doorstep. Rachel is cool towards Henk, but feels that seeing he is already in town, and her brother’s so excited to have him there, she’s missed her chance to talk to Brad about things. What’s worse is that Brad seems very keen to push Henk and Rachel together as a couple. He thinks they’d be good together. Even Henk tries to gently dissuade Brad from this, but Brad doesn’t get the message.
Henk tries to talk to Rachel. He desperately wants her to know that he’s a changed man. From a corporate, drug taking, high flier, he’s now an uncomplicated, sober, Buddhist convert. Rachel tells him that doesn’t change what he did. Leah, who is the only person Rachel has confided in about Henk, is horrified that he’s turned up in town especially as Rachel had asked him not too.
Leah is adamant that Rachel still needs to tell Brad, but Rachel doesn’t want to throw a dark shadow over the wedding preparations. Others in town, most notably Cassie and Martha, are quite taken by Henk when they cross his path. Henk’s different to the local guys, and he’s especially supportive of Martha who is having trouble dealing with Jack and Sam being together. Martha missed her opportunity to tell Jack she was still in love with him before Sam returned to the Bay. She’s grateful for Henk’s support. It’s when Leah sees Henk and Martha heading up to Martha’s Diner Apartment later that night that Leah feels she has to act, and she calls to let a horrified Rachel know what’s happening.
Colleen has gone to a lot of trouble to bake a traditional, three tier fruit cake, to be Brad and Sally’s wedding cake. She wanted it to be perfect and engaged a bakery to do the finishing touches. The cake is ready for collection and Colleen is in a tizzy, as she has no transport to collect it in. Eventually, Cassie, who has just passed her driver’s license test, convinces Alf to let her drive Colleen in to pick up the cake.
Alf insists on coming along to ride shotgun. The trip to the bakery is incident free, but the cake is destroyed on the return journey when Cassie has to brake suddenly to avoid a car reversing out from a driveway. Colleen is distraught, until Leah comes to the rescue with a miraculous repair job, only to see Colleen sees Brad and in a panic drops the cake. The surprise cake is a surprise no longer, and it’s also beyond repair, so the gang eat some of the salvaged product for dessert that night.
Martha is trying hard to come to terms with Sam and Rory being back in town and that they appear to be so happy together. She was sure that she and Jack were on track for reconciliation. That seems lost now and it’s especially difficult for Martha to take as Sam, after noting Martha and Jack’s close rapport, has insisted that Jack breaks what Sam considers to be his co-dependent relationship with Martha. Will Martha tell Jack how she really feels about him? Or is it too late?
