Extended Summary
Concerned for Martha, and acting on a call from Leah that Henk and Martha were seen heading up to the diner apartment together with a bottle of wine, Rachel is camped outside the next morning to see if Henk did in fact stay the night. Sure enough Henk emerges from the apartment and heads out for a surf. Rachel unburdens her concerns to Alf, she doesn’t think Henk will be good for Martha and learns from Alf that the relationship isn’t romantic. Henk has simply moved into the spare room until the wedding. Rachel isn’t convinced about Henk’s motives and confronts him. Henk does his best to convince her that he’s a changed man and that neither Martha nor Rachel has a reason to fear him. But Henk realises he’s not making much progress with Rachel.
Cassie has also noticed that Henk is in town, and she likes what she sees. She starts spending some time with him and is impressed by how different he is to the local guys, with his philosophical outlook and his meditation sessions. She certainly doesn’t see the large age difference between her and Henk as a barrier. Rachel tries to warn Martha off Henk, but Martha insists that she has no romantic interest in him at all. When Henk hears about Rachel’s warning he pays her a visit. Henk realises Rachel can’t let go of what happened between them, and in order to give her some closure Henk has decided to come clean to Brad and if necessary the police. Rachel is taken aback by the suggestion and realises that maybe Henk has changed. Rachel, somewhat against her better judgment, tells him there’s no need to tell Brad.
Geoff, now staying with Tony and Lucas, is growing more concerned for Annie who is now living alone with Pop. When Geoff discovers that Annie is doing all his former chores around the farm, he’s distressed. The work is too heavy for Annie and she’s clearly exhausted. Geoff pays Pop a visit and is made to feel like an outcast. Pop won’t even entertain the idea of Geoff living in town, but still coming out to the farm to do his chores.
Annie and Geoff reconcile, and talk about Pop’s failing health and the state of the farm. Geoff reckons the farm is killing Pop, and it’s taking a toll on Annie’s health too. The only real solution for the family is to sell the farm. Annie goes out to see Pop to try to convince him to sell. Annie tells Pop that if he doesn’t she’s going to move into town to stay with Geoff. Pop is adamant; the farm is not for sale. Lucas becomes concerned about Annie’s well being when she fails to show up for a planned tutoring session. He too goes out to the farm to find her, and eventually locates her locked in a room. Lucas finally frees her, only to find their escape blocked by Pop wielding a shotgun. According to Pop, Annie isn’t going anywhere and certainly not with Lucas.
