Tragedy strikes and panic sweeps through Summer Bay – some of our favourite residents lives will be changed forever.
Extended Summary
After a very difficult period in his life, things might finally be looking up for Aden. After being trapped beneath the collapsed roof of the Diner, his recovery is going well, and it seems his most serious problem is a mild case of memory loss. Specifically, he’s forgotten the argument he had with his father, and what it was about. Though the doctors expect his memory to return, they can’t say how long it will take, and Aden’s father Larry couldn’t be happier. He sees the situation as a clean slate on which to scribe a new, healthier relationship with his son.
When Roman comes to visit Aden, Larry sees his interference as the biggest threat to what he thinks would be best for everyone; burying the past for good and getting things back on track with his son. When Larry goes over Rachel’s head and bans him from visiting Aden, Roman is left with a conundrum, unsure what he should do, or what is best for Aden.
As the Den nears its opening, Leah is thrilled, but Irene and Roman are worried she’s being a little too blasé about the practicalities of running it as a business.
The Bay reels at the revelation of Sam’s wrong doings; that she harboured Johnny Cooper, and then murdered him, along with her whole shady past, after it is all printed on the front page of the Coastal News, complete with her wedding photo with Jack. Worse, Sam has fled from hospital, and is now on the loose. No one can quite believe it, they never could have guessed that Sam would be capable of such things, nor can they imagine what possible motives she could have had for harbouring him in the first place.
Jazz gets a perplexing phone call from Sam, asking for help. She agrees to sneak into Jack’s house and retrieve Sam’s emergency money, though she’s hesitant even to help this much, and promises Sam that after this, she’s on her own.
For Rachel, the one person who did have suspicions, the real worry in all this is Sam’s health, having run so soon after a miscarriage, she could be haemorrhaging. For Tony the main worry is Jack, who, having left the Bay to see Rory and avoid the scandal only to be blamed by his step son for what has happened to Sam, isn’t answering his mobile. Finally Tony gets a short text, Jack needs his help, and asks to meet at Stewart’s Point. Tony goes immediately, and moments later Rachel receives an equally mysterious call from Sam, her voice weak, begging for help. Whatever’s happened, it’s not good.
Rattled by something, Morag arrives home to make an urgent call to the police.
On hearing the truth about Sam, Martha’s first instinct is to go after Jack and help him however she can. Morag thinks it’s a bad idea, but Roman feels Martha should do whatever she thinks is right. But it seems Martha may be in more danger than she thinks when she arrives home to find Sam waiting for her. The next time we see her she is clearly under immense stress, though trying to hide it, and her cheek bears a nasty scratch. She’s come to the new Diner to find Roman, and when he finally arrives, they’re clearly hiding something.
The next morning, Sam is found washed up on the beach, dead.
