Extended Summary
Melody sits looking unhappy and reading a copy of ‘Spring Awakening’ claiming that the book really speaks to her as it highlights that ‘parents don’t get their kids and that schools don’t teach the important things’. Belle and Irene, seeing Melody’s sorry state, wonder what’s wrong with her and whether this has anything to do with either Geoff or Nicole. Leah is determined to find out but doesn’t want to interfere in case the sanctity of the Den is questioned.
Nicole’s flirting with Geoff continues as she offers more kissing lessons but this time he can practice on her.
Belle gently prods Geoff for an answer about Melody. He is happy to talk as he’s curious as to why Melody is freezing him out. He quickly reveals that Melody may not be interested in him due to his poor kissing skills, which is something that Nicole told him. Belle’s mind ticks over – what is Nicole up to? Belle quickly picks up that Nicole has been lying to Geoff and tells Geoff that no first kisses are perfect and he doesn’t need to practice on Nicole. Belle conjures up a plan to get Nicole back for trying to break up Geoff and Melody’s relationship. Irene stresses her concern about Nicole’s manipulative ways to Roman. But without the facts to back it up, Roman’s not interested in Irene’s instincts.
Leah finds Melody’s copy of ‘Spring Awakening’ in the Den and makes sure it’s returned to her via her mum. Leah’s unaware that this book is a time bomb – one look at its contents and Christine Jones will come crashing down on Melody and Summer Bay High. Sure enough, Christine approaches Miles posing the question ‘what kind of man would give such inappropriate material to a 15 year old girl?’ She leaves him pondering the question as she leaves with one final promise – she will be calling a P&C meeting to bring this issue out into the open. Bartlett, trying to reassure Christine that all is under control, cautions Miles on the problems of the book however this warning to Miles is far from sufficient punishment as far as Christine is concerned. The feeling is she’s only just begun.
Bartlett claims that ‘Spring Awakening’ promotes teenage rebellion and promiscuity and he wants all the books recalled immediately. Jazz has convinced Miles to let her deal with Bartlett on the Christine Jones issue. Miles picks up on the fact that Jazz has been blackmailing Bartlett and wants no part of it.
