Extended Summary
Unaware that anything has gone wrong and still waiting for the police to arrive, Alf buys some time at the fight by having Viv faint before the match starts. The charade goes on as long as it can, but still the police are nowhere to be seen, and finally the fight begins. This time Ric gives it his all, but hard as he might try, he’s totally outclassed by Logan, and it’s all Alf can do not to get in the ring and help him. Things are getting dire when sirens finally ring out from outside, and the warehouse descends into chaos. But they’re not police sirens, they’re ambulance sirens, Rachel has come to the rescue with a plan of her own. Inside, Noel pleads desperately with the heavy guys who demanded the rematch, but they don’t care who’s responsible for all this, he’ll be hearing from them.
Noel’s at breaking point with Ric when Rachel enters with the ambos, under the pretext that they’re responding to a call about Viv’s collapse. Flummoxed, Noel allows them to take Viv away. But even with Viv gone, it’s far from over for Ric, Tony and Alf when the seemingly defeated Noel returns from his office with a gun and demands Ric and Logan finish their fight. With little choice, Ric steps back into the ring with Logan. Noel wants him punished and it isn’t looking good. But before any blows can be struck, Jack arrives with Fitzgerald in uniform, her gun trained on Noel. Unwilling to give up yet, Noel turns to run, only to be tackled to the ground moments later by Jack. It’s finally over.
Matilda is relieved beyond measure when Ric arrives home, safe if not entirely unhurt, just happy to have him in her arms again. When they get a call from Rachel at the hospital, about complications with Viv’s condition, they go together. Viv’s been experiencing pain and contractions, as well as spotting. The doctors can help, but given the baby’s condition, Viv has to decide if they will. Ric doesn’t want to make the decision for her, and Viv is terrified of making such a monumental decision under circumstances like these, knowing Noel could be going to gaol, leaving her alone to raise the child. But Matilda steps forward, Viv wouldn’t have called them here if she didn’t want to keep the baby, and tonight Ric put his life on the line for it. As far as she’s concerned, the decision is clear. Ric and Viv can only agree, taken aback by Matilda’s selflessness, and they decide to do whatever it takes to save the baby. Everything goes well, but the question remains, what will they do if Noel gets bail? There’s no telling what he’s capable of.
After Jack’s handling of the night, the consensus is strong that he should rethink his resignation from the police. But Jack doesn’t want to think about it. Confused at first, Martha realises that Jack is afraid he’ll lose her if he goes back to the force, that he can’t have both. Jack doesn’t deny it, after all, the reason their first marriage broke down was that he put his work first. But this time Martha knows he’ll put her first, and she wants him to go back to the police. Jack’s not ready to make such a big decision in a rush, but Martha makes a bigger one, and asks Jack to marry her.
