Can Kirsty make it as school secretary? Will Matilda leave Ric to go to university?
Extended Summary
A chance encounter with Bartlett in the car park may just work to Kirsty’s advantage. Bartlett has a secretarial job going at the school and he wants Kirsty to take the job. Initially hesitant about childcare, Kirsty turns him down. But when Colleen offers to mind Ollie for her, she can’t get to the school fast enough to tell Bartlett she has changed her mind. It’s only afterwards that she stops to think about whether she will be able to perform or not. How will she manage as School Secretary when she can barely turn a computer on?
Charlie and Ross are still concerned about Ruby’s relationship with Pat but Ross doesn’t see they have any option but to wait and let the relationship run its course. Meanwhile, as Ruby is excited about her first day at Summer Bay High, Pat’s search for a new job isn’t going so well. He has trouble even getting references which sets him thinking about whether or not he has a future in Summer Bay.
When Ruby meets up with Pat after school to tell him about her first day, she wonders why he’s so distracted. She is aghast to hear him say that he has decided to leave Summer Bay for good. Much as he loves her, he just doesn’t think they have a future together and after a tearful farewell he heads to his ute, leaving behind a saddened Ruby to seek sympathy from her relieved family.
Ric and Alf are busy making plans for the bait shop while Mattie is still trying to muster the courage to break the news of her university offer to Ric. Belle eventually manages to persuade her to talk to Ric and tell him how much this move means to her. But when she does Ric’s reaction isn’t exactly what she was hoping for.
Instead of jumping at the chance to move away and do something new, Ric doesn’t want to give up the opportunity of running the bait shop with Alf. He was hoping his new start would be in Summer Bay, not in Perth. Frustrated and angry, Matilda gives him an ultimatum – she is going to Perth, with or without him.
