Extended Summary

Irene is having trouble sleeping in her prison cell, knowing there’s a full bottle of booze in there with her. On top of all her other angst, this temptation is the last straw. She tries to tip the alcohol down the sink, but stops herself and replaces it under her pillow. Somehow she manages to fight off the demons, but for how long can she keep this up? Unsure as to how the booze got into her room, the next morning Irene approaches the cell mate of a prisoner who previously offered to sell her booze, while out in the yard. Irene tries to give the bottle back but the inmate it’s too dangerous to do so out under the glare of the Guards. She also points out to Irene that being inside is a different world – either she has friends or she has enemies, and trying to counteract favours isn’t a good move. Irene hallucinates, seeing Lou back on the boat, asking her why she’s abandoned him. Irene returns to her cell, taking the bottle of alcohol back with her.

When taking an afternoon nap, Irene is taunted by images from her ill fated boat trip with Lou. She relives the terrifying moment she realises Lou’s no longer on the boat and wakes in a panic – and it drives her to drink. By the time she endures further hallucinations of Lou asking her why she had deserted him, the entire bottle has been consumed. Feeling guilty, and down on herself, Irene arrives back to her cell after dinner, only to find it being searched. The empty booze bottle has been discovered and Irene finds herself in even more trouble.

Martha is furious to find out that Hugo is having to rearrange part of his day to return to the Police station and answer Hugo’s question, a meeting having been brokered by Charlie. The session is tense, and Charlie has to calm things down at one point, but passes okay. Hugo later reluctantly agrees to take Angelo out on his boat to show him exactly where the shark attack occurred. Martha’s rage at Angelo is concerning those close to her – Alf has to point out that Angelo can interview who he likes in regard to a police interview, and Rachel and Tony both tell her she needs to learn how to control her anger before it consumes her. She is concerned that isn’t strong enough to do it, but Rachel points out how well Tony is doing, and they pair of them both tell Martha that, given what she’s been through, she’s the strongest of them all. Later, Angelo attempts to get a juice from the bar, but Tony tells him to leave, and Alf tells him that, despite the front Tony puts on, he can tell that he’s just bottling all his anger up, which is an unhealthy attitude to adopt.

Martha packs up some furniture to take to the farm and Rachel and Tony offer to help her with it, but she insists she’ll recruit Hugo into the task. However, Xavier, accidentally let’s slip that Hugo is taking Angelo out on his boat that evening, despite Hugo’s best efforts to keep it from Martha. All Martha’s insecurities collide, and she’s convinced that Angelo means to harm Hugo. No amount of reasoned discussion will quell Martha’s fears and she begs Hugo to cancel the trip. Warmed by Martha’s concern for him, and not wanting to cause her anymore concern, Hugo cancels the trip. Angelo is irked by this and insists he’ll get a court order to make it happen. Hugo tells him to do what he likes, but he’s not going ahead with the trip today for Martha’s sake – and Angelo cannot help but point out the level of feeling Hugo must have for Martha in order to do such a thing for her benefit.
