Extended Summary

Alf and Hugo are in hot pursuit of the shadow that went under the boat when they suddenly realise Miles has been left behind. They search the surrounding waters, but it’s almost impossible in the dark to see anything. Terrified and bleeding, Miles treads water, his strength fading by the minute, when he suddenly remembers the torch Ollie gave him. Alf and Hugo follow the torch light and locate Miles, just in time. After a second day bobbing around on the ocean to no avail, the boys finally agree it’s time to give up, the only thing they’ve fished out of the water is Miles. Just then the device starts beeping, and they hook onto something big. But when they pull it up, they all stop confused and then horrified…

At the Diner, Belle and Aden continue to be estranged as Liam arrives with exciting news that he’s booked some studio musicians and a nearby studio, and is going to make some recordings. Belle’s pleased he’s being so pro-active about his career, all the time aware that they’re being watched jealously by Aden. Aden later spots Liam and his mates in the Surf Club, and is surprised to see a small packet of drugs exchange hands. Belle meets up with Rachel to discuss her concern that Irene is drinking in jail. Rachel promises to go with her to make an assessment herself. Just then, Aden approaches. Quietly he tells Belle he’s just witnessed Liam buying drugs, and though she fiercely defends Liam, it leaves Belle rattled.

Jerry has kept to the deal, and printed a favourable story about Irene in the Coastal News. Belle and Rachel visit Irene who lies about her drinking, stating that whilst she has had urges, she hasn’t been tempted. Rachel and Belle both offer their support, and urge Irene not to give up hope. But Irene is despondent – she feels like she’s being punished, but she has no idea why. And when a bottle of gin is secretly left for Irene yet again, she barely hesitates. Irene’s going off the rails, fast. Back at the Diner, Aden accuses Belle of burying her head in the sand when it comes to Liam. Belle’s not in the mood, and when Liam turns up, she’s grateful for his care and concern, especially when he asks after Irene – unlike Aden.

Belle accepts Liam’s offer of a takeaway meal back at his motel room. But when he starts raving with increasing intensity about going away together, and ignoring Belle’s protests that she has responsibilities here in the Bay, Belle walks out, annoyed. And Liam pops a pill, confirming all Aden’s suspicions.

Charlie and Watson are still investigating the robbery at the bottle shop, but with the lack of fingerprints or security footage its becoming difficult. Charlie remarks that the robbers knew what they were doing, and were too professional for Summer Bay. A weary Angelo arrives late to work, explaining to Charlie he had to walk since someone slashed his tyres, including the spare. And although he tries to make light of it, the continual harassment from locals is starting to distress him. He’s going to start walking everywhere. Meanwhile, Aden finds Tony putting himself through a punishing workout and teases him about having a mid-life crisis.

Back at the station, Angelo reveals to Charlie that if he doesn’t turn up something soon in the severed hand case, he’s likely to be re-assigned elsewhere. He admits that he didn’t want to leave without doing his job, the unspoken thought being that if he’d done good here, people might have forgiven him. Charlie is left feeling sorry for the tortured Angelo. Later Angelo receives a call from Hugo and is waiting on the Pier when the three shark hunters return. Grimly Alf reveals what they pulled up out of the ocean – it’s the decomposed body of Lou De Bono.
