Extended Summary
Giving his statement at the station, Alf hopes that the discovery of Lou De Bono’s body will help clear Irene’s case. Donna overhears this and does not agree – she says Irene murdered her husband and she will get everything she deserves. But when the lab report comes in the next day, Angelo and Charlie discover that the shark bite wasn’t the cause of death – Lou was in fact shot before he even went into the water. It isn’t looking good for Irene’s case. Belle breaks the news to Irene and with final confirmation that Lou is gone, Irene breaks down completely. Just as her lawyer Kay arrives with the news that Lou was shot. Mortified, Irene insists it wasn’t her and although it’s in Irene’s interests to co-operate, grief overtakes her and she shuts down. She heads to the police station where she has an encounter with Donna, who states that Irene is nothing but a gold-digging killer. It takes all Belle’s strength to not slap Donna as she’s led into the interview room.
Rachel shares her concerns with Leah that Tony may be channelling his anger at Angelo into physically punishing work outs. Leah advises her to talk to him, but Rachel doesn’t want to look paranoid if it’s not true. Leah suggests it’s better than Tony overdoing it and ending up in hospital. With Leah’s advice in mind, Rachel tentatively broaches the subject with Tony, but he assures her he’s getting himself fit for when the baby comes – nothing to do with Angelo. Nevertheless, Rachel remains unconvinced and it’s not until Tony stops to assist Angelo, whose tyres have been slashed yet again, that she finally believes her husband has let go of his hate.
Martha is disappointed to discover that after returning from his shark hunting expedition, Hugo is still avoiding her, and has taken off to visit Gina in the city. Xavier has picked up on the tension between his brother and Martha and can’t help wondering what could be behind it all. Ruby suggests if Hugo’s business is about to go bust, possibly he’s making things difficult for Martha, so that if does have to leave town, she’ll be glad to get rid of him. Meanwhile, Martha has told Rachel that Hugo is in love with her, and that she’s decided to live out on the farm part-time, to give Hugo space so his feelings can pass. Rachel suspects this is just another avoidance tactic, but Martha doesn’t know what else she can do.
Liam demands to know why Belle walked out on him last night, and declares that he meant what he said about wanting Belle to come on tour with him. Belle tells him again that she has responsibilities in the bay, and whilst waiting tables isn’t the most glamorous of jobs, it is a routine which is part of her recovery. Meanwhile, two teenage girls are brought into the station for smoking drugs on the beach, claiming they were given to them by Liam Murphy. So when Belle turns up to argue Irene’s innocence and accuses Angelo of making them all pay for his mistake (killing Jack), Angelo warns her to save her moral lectures for her boyfriend, who’s been pushing drugs on teenage kids.
Belle admits to Aden that she feels like an idiot, but when she finds Liam in his motel, high as a kite and proposing marriage to her, she tries to help him get to the hospital. However, Jerry from The Coastal News has been lying in wait, and hounds Liam for some paparazzi shots. Off his face, Liam climbs to the top of the building as Belle calls 000. Aden arrives, but in the process of trying to get Liam down, slips himself and is left hanging from the edge of the roof, holding on for his life…
