Extended Summary
Having joined the dots and realising that Tony perhaps still holds a major grudge with Angelo, Martha and Charlie are hot on their heels heading towards Jack’s grave. In a tense moment, with Tony holding Angelo down at the edge of the cliff, Tony’s anger towards him is still omnipresent. Angelo wants Tony to know that he too suffers every day after what happened with Jack, and he states it will be better for both of them if Tony just killed him. Martha rushes up to them screaming out and pleading for Tony to stop, but Angelo tells them to let him do it. Tony shouts for them all to shutup, and that he has to put things right – its what Jack would have wanted!
Martha mentions how they all need him, especially Rachel and the baby. Tony thinks for a beat but soon enough there is a sharp crack from the cliff face as the ground crumbles beneath them. Tony’s instinct sees him grab hold of Angelo tightly, who is now dangling over the edge of the cliff. With Charlie and Martha now gripping tightly onto Tony, Angelo simply needs to extend his hand and reach out for Tony to be lifted to safety, but he hesitates – giving Tony the clear option of letting Angelo die if he wants to. The men hold a look for a second and with Tony coming to his senses he tells Angelo to take his hand. Reaching out he grips Tony’s hand. Hugo and Alf have also just arrived on the scene and with Hugo’s help Angelo is pulled to safety. It’s all over.
Alf tells Tony that he’s needed at the hospital and they start to leave – but Charlie won’t allow it. She is an on-duty police officer and she simply can’t turn a blind eye to what Tony has just done. However Angelo insists that Charlie let him go – if she doesn’t then he’ll refuse to make a statement. Charlie reluctantly lets Tony go on the condition that he reports to the police station immediately after visiting Rachel.
Meanwhile, in hospital Rachel is being attended to by the obstetrician, desperate for information about her baby and panicked about a missing Tony. Leah arrives to support her and Rachel is soon told that she is having mild contractions – there is a chance they may have to deliver the baby at that moment. With Tony now safe from his ordeal with Angelo, he rushes into the hospital and to her side. Soon enough the baby’s heart rate returns to normal and her contractions settle. Rachel is out of the woods and is told after staying in for just a few days she can then go home.
Charlie finds Angelo down on the beach and asks him why he didn’t take Tony’s hand immediately. Angelo replies that he didn’t want to fight anymore – Martha and Tony could move on with their lives and Angelo wouldn’t have to live with the guilt anymore. Whatever he does and says, its never enough and he’s tired. Charlie explains that with time he will find peace, and people will forgive him only once he has forgiven himself. She notices he is still bleeding and insists on taking him to the hospital. After he’s patched up, Charlie tries to make some headway with Angelo, but he just questions her as to why she would care what happens to him. She’s about to reply when May turns up, fussing all over Angelo. Charlie makes a quick exit.
With the emergency behind him, Tony is left owing an explanation to Rachel about his whereabouts. Martha and Hugo soon join them and Tony begins his explanation to all of them. Martha is reassuring, telling Tony that in the end he had a choice and he chose to save Angelo’s life. But Rachel isn’t so forgiving – shocked, she is now aware that her husband is capable of such malice.
With Tony readily accepting of his fate and preparing himself to head to the police station, Charlie is quick to tell him that there’s no need – Angelo is refusing to make a statement as he doesn’t want to add to Tony’s hurt. Angelo won’t press charges so Tony’s off the hook. With Tony in the clear, he takes himself off to Jack’s grave where he begs for Jacks forgiveness. After this harrowing ordeal and with a clean slate being given to him, Tony seems to finally have closure.
Martha arrives home to find Angelo on her doorstep. He thanks Martha for trying to talk Tony around and starts to walk away, but Martha calls him back. After seeing how Tony’s hatred manifested itself today, Martha tells Angelo that its time they both moved on with their lives. She doesn’t want to go on hating Angelo – and tells Angelo that he should stop hating himself for what happened. Its a new chapter for them both.
Martha and Hugo find themselves alone after a big day. Martha admits to not wanting be on her own tonight which is why she hasn’t gone back to the farm. Hugo is quick to read this as perhaps she doesn’t want to be without him tonight. With his eyes locked on hers, he takes a chance leaning in to kiss her. Martha too gives in to desire and soon they are kissing passionately – they can’t hide from each other any longer.
